Wuthering Heighs is a classic book she named the song after. She sings her song in the voice of Kathy, the protagonist. The book starts with Kathy being a phantom, I think that explains the voice :)
I’m a singer… I’m classically trained but have done some theatre. This song is very difficult to sing! I’m trying to think of a pop/rock/contemporary-during-the-past-century song that is more technical and I’m drawing a blank. And it’s so unique and creative… AND SHE WAS 17 YEARS OLD when she wrote it!! The style might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but Kate Bush is worthy of so much respect! 🫡☺️
I am 'very big on her voice doing that'. She has an incredible voice with an amazing range. Stunning original song and performance. She is a ghost here and in perfect character. It’s Kate Bush the beautiful genius! This song is a masterpiece. Like her it is so original and still inspires so many musicians, artists, songwriters, producera and singers today. It broke the mould as did she. I hear so many upcoimng artists today refering to her. From the same album, her first album (The Kick Inside) The Man With a Child in His Eyes is beautiful. magical album.
Please be reassured, most people haven't read the book either, it's a Victorian novel after all, not most people's choice. However, I think it landed easier on us Brits in the late 70s because of television and film adaptations, the BBC had done one in the 70s iirc, so more people were familiar with it. It's not to be taken too literally though, haha, it's Kate's imagination of the character rather than a scene from the novel. Anyway, there ain't much like it.
Kate Bush is a storyteller, and frequently inhabits the characters in her stories: she's been a ghost, an actor in a play, a haunted house, a woman stranded in the ocean, trying not to die, a young boy who idolizes his scientist father, a mother whose son has died in a war, a fetus trying to survive, a donkey, and so many more. She's brilliant, and always worth the listen, and reading the lyrics.
You can watch the movie. It's been done over and over and over. She wrote this over a weekend because she though her first album needed a hit. The label thought she was nut's and fought her. She won and it flew up the charts. She got a lot of first time awards for it too.
Kate Bush is a musical genius, you really should check her incredible lyrics. She wrote rhis after seeing a BBC adaptation of the novel Wuthering heights. I've been fan since this song came out.Kate has an amazing vocal range.
There's nobody like her. Watch her interviews and she's demure and soft-spoken. Watch her perform and she's a dervish maniacal person with a vocal range that's otherworldly. She's not afraid to go to places where we've all been fearful to go. This bleeping song was the first female composed song to top the UK charts with a self-composed song. David Gilmore helped her get the record contract but they all agreed she could use a couple years to mature even though she already had over a hundred songs she'd composed at 15. The record company wanted the initial single released to be "Hammer Horror", but she insisted on "Wuthering Heights". The rest is history. Her influence is inestimable.
I have some prepared notes that add further details about the song: ==== A while before Wuthering Heights was written, a younger Kate managed to catch the tail end of a BBC adaptation of the Emily Bronte novel Wuthering Heights when the ghostly Cathy was outside a window of Heathcliff's house wanting to be let in. Kate shares the same birthday as Emily Bronte, and when she was young, she was referred to as cathy. In order to get a feel for Cathy Kate read part of the book, interestingly when she did get round to reading all of it after finishing writing the song, Kate noticed certain phrases from parts that she hadn't initially read had ended up in the Lyrics anyway. Kate said that when she sang this song, she was Cathy, she was channelling the character. Kate's vocal performance is a single take with no edits. Interestingly, when Kate was a child, she was called Cathy, and she has the same Birthday 30th July, as the author of "Wuthering Heights" Emily Bronte Kate had to fight her record company to get Wuthering Heights to be her debut single, EMI had chosen a completely different track from her "The Kick Inside" album, in the end EMI released Wuthering Heights because they thought that it would fail and teach Kate a lesson, instead it became a worldwide smash hit. Hitting number 1 in Australia, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand, Portugal, and the UK. It was at least a top 10 (or better) in nine other countries. A single chart performance that would only be surpassed in 2022 by "Running Up That Hill." ==== Some further background information. A freature of this song and many of Kate's songs are very unusual key and timing changes, which shouldn't work but somehow do. Kate was never exposed to musical theory, she just writes what sounds good to her. "Wuthering Heights" worked because it was unusual and different to anything else in the charts, and in 1978, this was when Punk Rock was very much a part of the UK music scene. By reaching UK number 1, she became the 1st female artist to get to the top of the charts with a self written song, the first of numerous UK records that Kate has set, over the years. The second red dress version of the video, has spawned an annual worldwide event that's held on or near to Kate's birthday called "The Mosf Wuthering Heights Day Ever". Groups get together mostly red dresses (or at least wearing red), and they dance along to "Wuthering Heights" using the dance moves from that video. Since this song made such an impact there's plenty of analysis videos on TH-cam, I shall only refer to a few of them if you want to dive deeper into the song, the titles of the videos are first, followed with the channel names in brackets: 📍Kate Bush's unique chord progression (Dave Bennett Piano) 📍Songs that Changed Music: Kate Bush - Wuthering Heights (Produce Like A Pro) There's also another video that goes into how Kate successfully won her fight with the record company to have "Wuthering Heights" as her debut single. However, it does include clips from Kate Bush music videos that you might not have reacted to yet: 📍How Kate Bush Won the Fight for "Wuthering Heights" | New British Canon (Trash Theory)
WytheringmHeights is an English classic novel written by one of the famous Brontë susters Emily Brontë who strangely ir perhaps not has the same birthday as Kate Bush
My second time asking if u could do "cloudbusting" which the video is amazing even has actor DONALD SUTHERLAND as the main character! She is amazing and also experiment IV is really crazy . They are wild storylines/videos. Nothing like this and way better than the army one. PLEASE ❤ IM A KATE BUSH FAN! Also a very short wild song is under the ice but no video... nevermind I'm realizing I don't read these so why ask
She’s doing the high ethereal voice because she’s the ghost of a dead woman haunting her lover There is a later version with more “normal” if you like vocals Still good but I prefer the innovation and Marination of the iriginal
To be honest all of the recommendations on the comments are good, though I would love if you reacted to The Sensual World (it has music video) and to The Night of the Swallow (or the entire The Dreaming album)

Emily BRONT??? Not Bronte (brontay) . Really?
U can listen to Get out of my house, There goes a tenner, sat in your lap, mother stands for comfort and hounds of love
Hahahah she got you 😂 ! she got me too with this one. What a phenom… so gorgeous

I've been singing this for 40 years and never had a problem. I've never had training.

The truly iconic Kate Bush
Looove it💜 great reaction!
Kate sang in that voice because it's the voice of Kathy who is a ghost at this point haunting Heathcliff. So, she's emulating a ghostly voice.
This was her very first release and made her an overnight star in the UK.

night of the swallow has some deeper vocals
Absolute favourite song of all time! Singing this song gives me such a high.

A 5? One day you're going to get her work and think...I gave her a 5. 😳🤦♂️
And you'll be embarrassed.

E T E R E A L . . . E T E R N A L . . . Always mesmerizing...Just love her! ❤
She's a ghost that's come back for her lover
The lyrics are on the back of the album/cd
Kid, stay in school, don't do drugs and it's past your bedtime!
I mean, really ? Wuthering Heights is one of the greatest books in the English Language and you haven't even heard of it ? Jeez...
WytheringmHeights is an English classic novel written by one of the famous Brontë susters
Emily Brontë who strangely ir perhaps not has the same birthday as Kate Bush
This song is based on a classic book by Emily bronte
The chorus also reminds me of a Barry Manilow song “Mandy”
strange phenomena and babooshka are some bops tho
This is a shorter radio edit type version. The red dress video is longer.

GET OUT OF MY HOUSE, HOUDINI, THE SENSUAL WORLD, AND HELLO EARTH NEXT
1978 oh my Lord:yes we did have music thar far back lol...and I was already 9🙄😂🎩
You don't need to read the book. It's maudlin and gothic and written for an audience before electricity.
And it's my favourite book. I read it every Christmas. By electric light. You forgot to say: 'in my opinion.'

We need some Unreleased reacts by Nicki Minaj. Her mixtapes/early Pink Friday songs are fire!
Like "Make a Baby", "Girlfriend" and "Dem Boys".
