    I have the LRT station with both heat gun and iron. Your video helped me conclude that it was not functioning correctly and it needed calibration. Brand new out of the box was low by 100 C. and since it only goes to 450 I was only hitting 350!! destroy 2 test chips before I figured it out. LRT 8586D. Once it was callibrated it poped the chips off like a pro!! Saved 50GB of my grandkids pics from the beginning of their lives. PRICELESS video my friend. Your video assured me that my device should be able to do the job and something else was wrong. THANKS AGAIN

      @ImmodderNation  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad the video helped. When I started I was melting boards because the heat was too high and the air was too low. I bring the air up just high enough that it doesn't blow the parts off the board. Use generous amounts of flux paste help as well.

    One "trick" that makes desoldering a little easier if you use solder wick / desoldering braid:
    Cut yourself small pieces (maybe half an inch or 3/4") off the reel and hold them in place with tweezers. Discard once saturated.
    If you keep the entire roll of desoldering braid attached, you have one huge hunk of copper there that will suck the heat away from your soldering iron quicker than anything. Depends on your iron of course.

      No problem. Hot air rework is a little trickier cause you need a lot of flux, moderate airflow (but not too much that your parts blow away), but not too much heat that you melt your components. Its an art.

I have been a Commercial TV High Technical Maintenanace Engineer for over 15.5 years +, I have done so much repair work on Sony. Ampex and Hitachi Tape Machines and Cameras back in the early 1980's. Hot air would be better for smaller components than TVs. With bigger components a soldering iron would be preferred.

Couple things I noticed, when using the soldering wick, add some flux, so you don't get a blob of solder stuck to the end of the wick, flux will allow the solder to wick in. You'll likely to wick it all infact. Same when de-soldering, add some flux to get better flow. Flux is your friend, if worried about the mess, you can use water based as opposed to Rosin based but rubbing alcohol will clean it right up.

    but what if your solder iron can go up to 450celcius and the hot air rework also 450celcius wont that make the hot air not necessary in that case? since to remove the solder connection of cold joint you can still used back the solder iron to melt the join, and the components can dry off by air dried, so in this case theres no need for hot air rework then?

    • @ImmodderNation
      @ImmodderNation  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Soldering iron and hot air station work differently. Soldering iron provides intense heat but directly by contact. Hot air station provides heat over a small area. Soldering would be better for attaching specific points whereas hot air station is better for SMD components like microchips with multiple contacts.
      For cold joints on a board, you would probably want to use a reflow oven or hot plate. There are different tools better suited for different tasks, but you could get them all to work in a similar way.

    you really should get a decent soldering iron first. this thing looks awful and the pointy tip is basicly the worst choice. a chisel tip or a flat bottom tip is much better in transfering the heat to the actual joint especially combined with solder wick.
    i find it nearly impossible to desolder stuff with the pointy tip, no way to get the solder hot from the get go. also you should add fresh solder first. seems counter intuitive, but makes desoldering much easier! also work with a generous amount of flux, makes the solder flow much better to wherever you apply heat to

    • @ImmodderNation
      @ImmodderNation  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ImmodderNation no problem, you just reminded me of myself when i started. i bought a soldering station from the hardware store and the thing only came with the pointy tip wich was pretty much useless for anything else than splicing wires together.
      sad thing was, there were no replacement tips available, so i had to take some bigger ones and turn them down on the lathe. worked great nevertheless.
      i got the same hot air station but it still feels wrong to heat stuff up to the point where the solder gets liquid, especially thinking that under normal conditions, you dont want to get the chips even remotely to that kind of temperatures.

    • @ImmodderNation
      @ImmodderNation  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those chips are surprisingly resilient. Remember a hot air rework station is blowing hot air, which is different from applying a soldering iron directly. There's always aluminum tape for components you don't want getting hot as well. Conveniently enough, I spend most time soldering wire in my videos so the pencil tip works great for me.

But, the reviewer did say that he used it for years with no problems. And I see that Amazon has dropped the price on the 858D from $ 89.99 to $ 39.99. At that price - WHO CARES as long as you can get a few years work out of it.

    • @ImmodderNation

      Similar maybe but probably not the same. Just like there is fast fashion, I believe there is fast tech. This is affordable, entry level stuff for people who don't want to spend a lot of money and aren't ready to commit to the high price of a workhorse piece of tech. 858D is a good example of this. Ofcourse there are better hot air rework stations but not at that price point and if you're going to be working on iPhones and replacing a lot of chips or SMD components, you probably already invested in better equipment anyway.

      No need to buy a Naga, buy something cheaper. You're going to destroy it, why waste the money? Technically the receiver and battery should make it work if wired properly. Just need to make sure the battery voltage is converted to 5V.

    I never considered using a heat station to remove a through-hole component. you risk removing a vital through-hole via in the process.

    • @ImmodderNation
      @ImmodderNation  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't own one of those. Premise is the same, adjust dial to correct temperature for hot air. For soldering iron, consult the manufacturer of your solder for recommended temperature. Usually 350 for most silver bearing solder.

      Start around 315 and go up. Remember to keep the heat moving don't hold in one place. Don't go higher than 400.

    Can you desolder components directly from large graphics card as GTX8800 using this hot air station without any bottom preheating?I would like to see this hard kind of tests.If it can does then its worth its money.

    • @ImmodderNation
      @ImmodderNation  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      For smaller components like surface mount stuff, yes. Larger work like the GPU may require a preheater. These don't blow as much air as the professional ones that use air pumps imo, but they can get just as hot.

    what is minimum air position

    • @ImmodderNation
      @ImmodderNation  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Do you mean the lowest air position you can have? 1, but depending upon the size of the smd device, you will want to increase or decrease the blower. More air for larger components, but too much air and smaller components may blow away.
