I want the Toronto Blue Jays to be a team like they were in '92 & '93. Everybody wanted to join the Jays, back then, like:
Position Players, such as - Joe Carter, Dave Winfield, Roberto Alomar, Rickey Henderson, Paul Molitor, John Olerud, Devon White, Tony Fernandez, Kelly Gruber, & Pat Borders, etc.
Pitchers - Juan Guzman, David Cone, Jack Morris, Pat Hentgen, Jimmy Key, Dave Stewart, Todd Stottlemyre, Duane Ward, Mike Timlin & Tom Henke, etc. (some players/pitchers) played only one year or both, in 1992 & 1993.

We have to pivot hard away from Alonso. He does not want to come to the Jays. So we need to simply walk away. We've put our best foot forward, and a very reasonable, competitive one at that. He's now just using the Jays as leverage.
I'm not saying that Alonso wouldn't be awesome in a Jays uniform for the right price. He would do some amazing bolstering of our improving lineup. But we've done what we can to convince him to come here, and now it's time for him to decide.
There's so much hate for Ross over the past several years. He has certainly not made it easy on himself with some of the contracts and decisions, or non-decisions, he's made. But some of the things he's done has been far and away spectacular from a economic and negotiation perspective for the Jays. Of course, I'm not saying he's perfect, he's far from it, but some of the deals he has struck are truly spectacular.
The Jays are now a top 5 spending club in all of MLB. That's pretty shocking. Now they need to produce on the field. They've got the pieces to compete for at least a wild card spot, in my opinion. Especially if we have some reasonably good years from Bo and Springer. If those two can have slightly above average years, we're going to have an aggressive lineup that will be a challenge for almost any pitcher.
And if Scherzer can do his thing, come in with that super hyper-competitive mindset, and have a 100+ innings of competitive ball, as well as create a competitive atmosphere and educate some of the younger pitching staff, this could be an 85 to 88 win year, even without Alonso.
I think if we get Bregman, and the other stars align that I just mentioned, this is definitely an 88-90 win year. A playoff spot, or at least a wild card one, and who knows after that. Maybe we even get to the ALCS.
How I would love to see that.

    • @RedMayan2012

Spectacular? Which contacts in particular do you consider as spectacular. Being a top 5 spending team with the payers we have at the moments is defintely nothing to brag about considering bo and vlad's current situation. It boggles my mind that people give him credit when we shoujld be in the middle of a dyansty. if he didnt blow up the team over a one inng melt down we would have had a much better chance at Shoei or Soto. The fact that he doesnt have vladdy locked up right now is disasterous and prob coast the jays a min of 5mill a yr waiting this long.

I agree with several points you made, except the pivoting hard and walking away from Alonso part. It's my very firm opinion that you have to keep your foot mashed on the proverbial gas pedal for as long as you can until he signs a contract with either us or the Mets. You cannot give up on, or walk away from that kind of bat. Most people don't know, but as far as pure run production goes, Alonso has been a better run producer than Ohtani during his career. The Jays simply cannot afford to let a bat like that slip through their fingers, and they need to do everything possible right up to the very end and give it their all.
With that said, that doesn't mean he will sign here, of course. To me, though, it's less about him "not" wanting to come to Toronto, and more about him preferring to stay with the team that he's played the entirety of his career with. It's all he's ever known. Regardless of the team or the player, sentimentality can be hard to bargain with. So, it's not necessarily that he "doesn't" want to come here, he's already shown interest in potentially coming here, but it's just that he prefers to stay in New York if he can. Also, him playing with the Mets' new toy, Juan Soto, everyday is also a draw for him, I'm sure.
However, if the Jays have any hope in luring him to Toronto, having Scherzer and Bassitt on our team (both of whom are friends and former teammates with the Mets) could potentially sway Alonso to sign here. I'm sure Bassitt talking with Scherzer about the benefits of playing in Toronto had at least some affect (Bassitt said he did this with Scherzer in an interview yesterday). We can only hope that Scherzer and Bassitt can somehow have some kind of effect on Alonso. Again, I'm not saying he'll sign here, but having people like that on our team could be an asset.
Overall, though, the Jays need to make a more significant offer to lure him here. They cannot afford to only offer a little more than what the Mets are offering. Compared to Ohtani and Juan Soto, Alonso's contract would be a veritable bargain, given his run production track record. The Jays just need to stop messing around and get it done.
Also, in regards to Bregman, for the money he is asking for, he's a hard no for me. You can read my own post about it elsewhere in the comments if you like. I've already said enough here. lol

Anthony Santandar has very quickly become one of my all time VERY FAVORITE Jays!!! It’s so RARE in this day and age to have any ball player, no less any Professional sports athlete even, exhibit such wonderful ideals that exemplifies utter selflessness and such dedication to being a pure TEAM player. It so obvious, he tried very hard to create AAV space, to provide room for further SIGNIFICANT high AAV signings to generously give Jays Management the BEST OPPORTUNITY to build a legitimate contender…. And SANTANDAR absolutely knew that!!!
Has anyone ever witnessed any player ever do the same???????..HELL NO… Simply because all players are just about them, and their utter greed, with apparent minimal regard to Team loyalty and the like.
HATS OFF TO ANTHONY. YOU ARE INDEED A GOOD MAN AND MOST IMPORTANTLY A GENUINE TEAM FIRST PLAYER !!!!!!!

I am just NOT interested in Bregman at 6-years/$156 million. The thing is, it's going to take significantly more than $156 million to make him consider coming here. Period. End of sentence. Reports have been that he prefers to not play anywhere where outside of Texas' zero income tax, and that any other team would have to make up the difference in any tax money that he would have to pay. Which means the Jays are likely to spend over $170 million to make up for those losses for him to play here. That kind of money is just WAY too much for a player who will be turning 31 by the beginning of this season, and who has already shown potential signs of decline.
To me, six years is way too much for a player who will be 37-years-old at the end of that kind of contract, and who will continue to decline throughout the duration of it. Additionally, even if you sign him at a shorter term/higher AAV contract, the AAV then becomes WAY too much for what you're getting in return. It's already too high at $156 million, and anything more than that is insanity, IMO. To me, there is VERY little value in the money that Bregman is asking for. I don't want to pay a Scott Boras tax for little to no value for the money paid. Let another team eat that kind of contract while he continues to decline. I don't want us to be the ones to do it. No thanks.

If you're going to pay the luxury tax and you're Shatkins and Bregman will agree to it, you might as well go for the shorter-term higher AAV deal. 4/$120, 3/$96 with a higher AAV to make up for the shorter term a bit, do that if you can. You cover the remainder of his prime years and avoid the Springer albatross contract years scenario, and Bregman gets his raise. That would be a good deal for both sides and it keeps Vladdy at first. You still wouldn't have a division contender, but if the goal is "wild card and deep run", this gives the Jays the best chance. I don't think anyone else is a serious contender at this point, or it would have happened by now.

Neither Alnso or Bregman will be on the Jay's come this season. They will both end up with their existing teams. We need to focus on signing Vladdy. Then maybe add a JD Marinez as a DH and hope Bo has a bounce back year and Springeer stays healthy.

Looking at someone's OPS going down isn't a tale tell sign of them becoming a worse hitter.
First, did numbers go up elsewhere in his offensive or at least stay the same?
Second, what where the circumstances of those seasons? Was he carrying an injury? Was he tired after multiple WS runs/wins? Did he lose protection in the batting line-up? Plus
    many other key possibilities.
Third, try looking at things like bat speed, whiff rate, chase, being an easy out (ground balls, lazy fly's) not sure what that stat is called but stats like that (what he didn't hit vs. what he did hit) helps give a more accurate assessment if numbers are all you are going to use to have the vision and understanding of player talent.

Dude, did you seriously point to his OPS in one year to indicate that he is on a decline. Never mind the fact that when you break down the OPS (On Base Plus Slugging) you can see the loss is in OBP and since his batting avg hasn’t changed much during those 3 years it just means he is getting walked less, that’s not a decline in player skills it’s a plate approach change.
