Fun fact: all the other pupfish you see are subspecies that diverged from the Amargosa Pupfish eons ago and are now endemic to the springs in Ash Meadows!
I love it when you visit out of the way places like this. I put it on my "to do" list and knock it out when I go out west in the summer. Yeah, that isn't the best time to visit a place like this, but I'd rather go in the summer as opposed to not go at all. The dirty freehub route is only 42 miles and I can easily carry 10 liters of water on my bike. Keep showing us these cool out of the way places!
So cool to see the pupfish, congrats on that. And you did some birding too! The best thing about traveling by bike. You move at the speed of observation.
My wife and I got married at Point of Rocks. Glad you were able to share but there is sooooo much more to see, probably 6 or 7 more springs and things.
The National Wildlife Refuge System (NWRS) is a hidden gem within the Department of Interior! So glad Ash Meadows NWR allows bike touring on their refuge! So glad you guys made this video!
Russ, I love the way you both are so into the natural environment without being overly nuts about it, all the while being nuts on party pace riding. Thanks!
Ha I’ve been involved in the management of this fish since like 2002 What a surprise to see you cycling to its habitat and talking about its life history. The enclosure is an unfortunate necessity because of some attempts to do the fish and its habitat harm.
Nevada is a treasure. I was out there in 1976-1978 for O&G exploration and hiked Ruby Mountains and the Grant Range. Picked up water and mail in Rachel when it was only months old. 2014-2017 on the way to Death Valley and Eastern Sierra started to see it as dirt road touring destination. You and Laura sealed the deal.
Thanks for another fun and interesting video. I really like the "party pace" to take in all the interesting sights. Thanks for the shout out for Dirty Freehub. I have ridden several of their routes and never been disappointed. You both
Now that was SUPER COOL! Love this content! This is exactly the kind of bike ride Iove to do! Thanks for the interesting facts to go along with the video. Can't believe that about the waves! Freaky! Thanks for taking us along!
Those crochet backed gloves: Where, what, how-much? Spandex backed gloves just don't do it, and offer no protection for the back of your hands if you have an accident. Must have!
Disclaimer: I haven't read all the comments...BUT, have you listened to the CRIMINAL Podcast Episode about a group of drunk anti-environmentalists who wreaked havoc on the facility? So glad the Pupfish made it through, but it was close. Thanks for all you do!
Such a cool location and route! Did they discuss any details about the water levels? I'm curious about that if it's consistent or if it has been getting lower and lower like Lake Mead
This looks like an amazing time! I would love to take a trip like this, but I don't know if purchasing a bike bag to bring our bikes on the plane is feasible since we currently don't travel often enough to really justify it. Are there any shops around that offer gravel bike rental for like a week or so?
I had an uncle who was a weekend prospector and told me about this family of hippies living 50 miles away from your trip, turned out it was the Manson family

I've really been enjoying this series of desert rides. Quite Inspiring thanks Russ and Laura

I used to do habitat restoration at Ash Meadows and spent a ton of time there. This brought back a lot of memories!
What an amazing place, and fish!! So fun you got to see them!! This is on my husband and I's bucket list!! Thanks!

Love how you two find interesting off-the-beaten-track places to bike and see some fun scenery, birds, even rare fish!
Super cool Oasis in the desert! I love to fish as well! Thank you Russ & Laura!

Dirty Freehub. I have ridden several of their routes and never been disappointed.
You both
Fascinating! You guys go to the best places! I appreciate the view, the information, and jealous of your gravel riding!
Nothing better than starting my morning with a large cup of coffee and watching you two take your audience somewhere interesting via bicycle.
Now that was SUPER COOL! Love this content! This is exactly the kind of bike ride Iove to do! Thanks for the interesting facts to go along with the video. Can't believe that about the waves! Freaky! Thanks for taking us along!
Wow, that place looks so cool.
Those crochet backed gloves: Where, what, how-much? Spandex backed gloves just don't do it, and offer no protection for the back of your hands if you have an accident.
Must have!
Really enjoyed this video! Thanks for bringing us along for the ride.
just read Under A White Sky by Elizabeth Kolbert. Big section on Devils hole and the pupfish. Highly recommend.
Really great spot! Thanks for sharing it!
You should hit the. Mountain bike area just north of Beatty. Free camping and hot showers. Very rideable for rigid bikes.
fish and bikes, 2 awesome things!
I love these RIDES!! So much fun!
iiiii freakin love it out there! and pupfish are amazing creatures!
Laura what cap are you wearing? I really like how long the ear flaps are, would love to know if the cap withstands winter riding.
Great camera work and editing. HNY
Thanks! What a lifetime experience! I love it! I'd rather ride on a highway than on heavily washboarded roads...
Wonderful!
Did you bring your fishin pole?
Thanks for sharing this awesome ride.
Looks like a fantastic & interesting place to visit.
Very interesting, thanks for the video.
Love these types of videos! Keep them coming. Those fish sure are cute. :)

No video of the "supplemental feeding"? Did the fish skeletonize a cow?
the whole fish thing is pretty interesting. ya just got to think about it a little.
Baja mt. Dew no Ice all electric challenge
Really enjoying this content!!
Love your content. Thx
Ahhhh so nice!
What temperatures were you experiencing when you were there. From your clothing, it looks like a great time of year to visit the area.
That hole needs an underwater drone exploration.
Nice!
Such a cool video! You gotta get that pupfish on a bandana or sticker:)
I second this idea and put forth another motion for more of this type of content. Revisit the travels of the "Epicurean" days for content?
Such a cool location and route! Did they discuss any details about the water levels? I'm curious about that if it's consistent or if it has been getting lower and lower like Lake Mead
Cool.
With all that fencing it's the Devil's Hole Detention Center
Is that water brackish?
Cool!
This is my idea of a perfect day.
The most peaceful place I've ever been.
Are you guys going to meet up with any artisan makers on your journeys.

Nearest place you could rent from would be Las Vegas.
I had an uncle who was a weekend prospector and told me about this family of hippies living 50 miles away from your trip, turned out it was the Manson family
Manson family lived in LA area.
🎉🎉
A fishing trip without the rods...

Criminal podcast has a good episode called The Devil's Hole Pupfish about some drunk rednecks breaking into the spring and barfing into the water
