Mahal (1949) as a movie, in my opinion, is more important while judged as what it paved way for, rather than (a movie) in absolute terms. As a movie, it was pathetic in terms of the weak and desultory plot but It proved to be the harbinger of a new genre of cinema & settled as a classic gothic fiction genre with the Indian flavour of reincarnation being added to it. It was this movie’s music that catapulted Lata Mangeshkar into everlasting fame. It also established Madhubala as one of the brightest stars of the firmament of Indian cinema & the film turned to be the first Bollywood horror film to have a theme music.
I have read all comments but except for one no one mentioned the music director of this film, the great Khemchand Prakash. He gave many musical hits during 1940s. The 1942 film 'Tansen' was a great musical hit with KL Sehgal himself acted as Tansen singing all those immortal songs. Khemchand Prakash was from Rajasthan and was highly respected in film industry. It was he who gave Kishore Kumar his first film song in 1946 film 'Ziddi'. The song was 'Marne ki duaen kyun mangu'. It is sad Khemchand Prakash died before 'Mahal' became a great hit.
What a movie! Such romance, such emotions, such direction, such acting, such story.... all are classic. What a golden age was that period! We are so unfortunate to miss that era! Kamal Amrohi was only 32 yeas old when he directed this classic movie. How unthinkable of such genius now a days! The golden British colonial era had produced many creative genius persons. We are most unfortunate not get birth in that golden era. Why have we failed to create such classic men and classic creations in our times? How can we create another golden era in this century? Very old move for me as my DOB is 1962. My father spent lot of time in India and used to tell us about very favorite moves, Mahal is one of these. Early morning we used to hear Radio Salon on our transistor Purnee Fami Sangeet . Me and my elder brother got habit from that time . My mother was making breakfast for us and we were enjoying Aya ga ana vala,, I can't forget that time , I'm 62 now but missing my loving behavior with us . These moves and songs remind me my old times ......Aya ga ana vala .....what a evergreen song .......
My.mother used to say ...this was a story of three births ..... when first time released in fifties.....the end of the movie was not sad.....the couple returns buys the same mahal in their third birth...when i saw in 1989 the end was same as now shown....end is differnt from original movie.
It's good that they changed the end..otherwise there would have been no poetic justice...that unscrupulous " Mallan" Asha is a culprit...if indeed it's a story of reincarnation..n she was some kamini then it means she had been playing with lives of other ppl for her own selfish ends...if Shankar indeed was her past birth lover..it means that he was keeping her surreptitiously in a " Mahal" as a mistress...while visiting her regularly from his home..he must be having a family..even then she wronged his wife & family...But I think there was no reincarnation...only a sordid play enacted by a mallan to entrap some rich guy in guise of a spirit...she wouldn't have come out with truth..if Ranjana hadn't left a letter mentioning her...

Brilliant movie.I saw this movie in 2021 almost 72 years after it was released but the screenplay and script was so crisp that it kept me glued

Mahal (1949) as a movie, in my opinion, is more important while judged as what it paved way for, rather than (a movie) in absolute terms. As a movie, it was pathetic in terms of the weak and desultory plot but It proved to be the harbinger of a new genre of cinema & settled as a classic gothic fiction genre with the Indian flavour of reincarnation being added to it. It was this movie’s music that catapulted Lata Mangeshkar into everlasting fame. It also established Madhubala as one of the brightest stars of the firmament of Indian cinema & the film turned to be the first Bollywood horror film to have a theme music.

I have read all comments but except for one no one mentioned the music director of this film, the great Khemchand Prakash. He gave many musical hits during 1940s. The 1942 film 'Tansen' was a great musical hit with KL Sehgal himself acted as Tansen singing all those immortal songs. Khemchand Prakash was from Rajasthan and was highly respected in film industry. It was he who gave Kishore Kumar his first film song in 1946 film 'Ziddi'. The song was 'Marne ki duaen kyun mangu'. It is sad Khemchand Prakash died before 'Mahal' became a great hit.

What a movie! Such romance, such emotions, such direction, such acting, such story.... all are classic. What a golden age was that period! We are so unfortunate to miss that era! Kamal Amrohi was only 32 yeas old when he directed this classic movie. How unthinkable of such genius now a days! The golden British colonial era had produced many creative genius persons. We are most unfortunate not get birth in that golden era. Why have we failed to create such classic men and classic creations in our times? How can we create another golden era in this century? Very old move for me as my DOB is 1962. My father spent lot of time in India and used to tell us about very favorite moves, Mahal is one of these. Early morning we used to hear Radio Salon on our transistor Purnee Fami Sangeet . Me and my elder brother got habit from that time . My mother was making breakfast for us and we were enjoying Aya ga ana vala,, I can't forget that time , I'm 62 now but missing my loving behavior with us . These moves and songs remind me my old times ......Aya ga ana vala .....what a evergreen song .......

My.mother used to say ...this was a story of three births ..... when first time released in fifties.....the end of the movie was not sad.....the couple returns buys the same mahal in their third birth...when i saw in 1989 the end was same as now shown....end is differnt from original movie.
It's good that they changed the end..otherwise there would have been no poetic justice...that unscrupulous " Mallan" Asha is a culprit...if indeed it's a story of reincarnation..n she was some kamini then it means she had been playing with lives of other ppl for her own selfish ends...if Shankar indeed was her past birth lover..it means that he was keeping her surreptitiously in a " Mahal" as a mistress...while visiting her regularly from his home..he must be having a family..even then she wronged his wife & family...But I think there was no reincarnation...only a sordid play enacted by a mallan to entrap some rich guy in guise of a spirit...she wouldn't have come out with truth..if Ranjana hadn't left a letter mentioning her...
