That's, in part, because Texas pride is actually *national* pride that was transferred into state pride when we joined the Union. Most other states tend to focus their state pride in the context of being part of Union. Texans tend to focus far more on our history of winning independence on our own *before* joining the Union. The stuff that has happened since then is simply added on top of that foundation.

I'm a 62 year old native Texan. Don't mess with Texas was a 1970's anti littering campaign. People from other states think it's some boastful "we're tough" thing. It's not, it never was.
It was "hey jerk, stop littering".
It actually worked. I personally witnessed the amount of trash on the side of highways dramatically decrease in a few years in the mid to late 70's.

    • @vidpie

"In 1985, [the Texas Department of Transportation] challenged GSD&M, an Austin advertising agency, to help them create a campaign that would reduce litter by a minimum of 5 percent in the first year. Just one year after the launch of the [Don't Mess with Texas] Stevie Ray Vaughan commercial, litter had decreased by almost 30 percent statewide."
"GSD&M" represents the surnames of the ad agency's founders. They used to tell people it stood for "Greed, Sex, Drugs & Money."

Yep. I remember that. I remember the first time I traveled out of state I was horrified at the amount of litter everywhere! My dad blamed things like that on the Yankees...though he usually only said that to get a rise out of mom, who WAS a "damn yankee"😂
As always though mom always had a litany of comebacks...Mountains in Texas are just hills, the deer are no bigger than a large dog our state tree is really just a bush, (mesquite tree)the state bird is a roadrunner cuz no respectful FLYING bird would live here,, and Texas is just dirt washed down from Oklahoma and last but not least she say "The only thing BIGGER in Texas is ego's"...I think daddy loved hearing her accent or something.🤣🥰 I've traveled and lived all over the US though and I am so very proud of our diversity. NC is another very litter conscious state while Chicago was horrid for it...Dallas by comparison was sterile. Could be different now though. Time marches on.

Wasn't originally a "we're tough" thing, but it has definitely evolved into that.
Also the double entendre of the word "mess" applied here makes this possible, to the point of perhaps being purposeful? "mess" as in "messy", or "dirty". Also "mess" as in "meddle" or "interfere". So:
      1) Don't make Texas dirty (the original sense of the phrase)
      2) Don't meddle with Texas (the current sense of the phrase)

They also realized that the word 'litter' didn’t motivate anyone. They landed on the word “mess” as a better, more emotionally charged word..."

Andre, the big differences between Mexican food and Tex-Mex largely comes down to the ingredients. Mexican food generally doesn't involve yellow (cheddar) cheese. It also tends to favor chicken or pork over beef.
Most of what the world has come to think of as "Mexican" food is actually Tex-Mex; and, is very different from what most people in Mexico actually eat.
Tortillas made from flour (wheat), hard taco shells (made from corn meal), grated yellow cheese and a heavy (though not exclusive) emphasis on beef are all signatures of Tex-Mex. English-speaking settlers adapted their own ingredients to the recipes already in use by their Tejano (Spanish-speaking Texans) neighbors.

The blending of cultures at the wars of Texas independence was more impactful in many ways due to establishing peace on the continent from the south and course the commonality of sacrifice in a shared belief. Were as in the American independence you have many loyalists who in many ways were held hostage in the efforts of nation building. Many had no intention of ever going against Britain. Whereas in Texas independence everyone was on the same page of the need for independence, more grassroots efforts so to speak.

Holding an independence referendum vote is actually on the *current* Republican party of Texas' platform. The plank was added with around 90% of the convention delegates voting in favor!
Several candidates for seats in the state legislature actually ran, in part, on a pledge to introduce a bill calling for just such a vote during the 2026 elections. Most of those candidates won their elections.
If, for whatever reason, Trump is unable to push through the reforms to government that he campaigned on, I could definitely see Texas independence winning at the polls, should we actually get a chance to vote on it!
Personally, I'm more inclined to vote in favor of independence *regardless* of how things go.

I have lived in Texas since 1957 when I was 4 years old. I’m the only one in my family (parents, siblings) not born in Texas. We are southern but unique as is each state. Texas is extremely conservative politically as are the other southern states. Only the most eastern part of the state has heavily wooded areas. The rest is more arid. The western half of the state has more rural areas due to the huge ranches that were there. I’m in a suburb of Dallas and have been for 40 years. I have lived near Houston, Denton, San Antonio. Most of my family is in Texas. Even my ancestors have been in Texas since before 1860.
Yes, we are proud of our state. I even have a credit card that looks like the Texas state flag.

Tex-Mex has a lot more cheese than regular Mexican food.

Exactly tex-mex has too much cheese. If you see nachos on the menu it is a tex-mex restaurant not a Mexican restaurant.

@@car6803 That is not true. Many Mexican restaurants in Texas have Tex-Mex food on the menu, even if that is not their primary offering.

Hello from Houston, Texas. Yes, things are different here from other southern states. I have lived in Florida and Georgia, but they are not like Texas. In Texas, kids in school pledge allegiance to the American flag, but also pledge allegiance to the Texas flag. Tex Mex is unique to Texas, but New Mexico has its own style of food too. Red and Green Hatch chiles are part of New Mexico cuisine. In Texas, it's usually Jalapeno peppers, Poblanos, and other chiles (but Hatch Chiles are only from Hatch New Mexico). Texas is also the only state that has Texas Rangers law enforcement officers. To become a Texas Ranger, one must serve in the Texas Department of Public Saftey (TDPS) which is kind of like state troopers. Of course, there is also a baseball team called the Texas Rangers associated with Dallas Texas, and we have our own Houston Astros here in Houston. If you have any questions about Texas, I'd be happy to answer them

Originally went there to hunt geodes, opal, and the Marfa Lights. (geology class field trip)
