The wright grip 2 wrenches are the best you can get. The grip, the repeatability in performance and the ruggedness of the wrench are all top notch. With a very fair price point. Like a previous commenter said. The only reason I still use my snap on wrenches over these is strictly because of the length. Wright refuses to make a long pattern wrench for some unknown reason.
My two favorite brands of hand tools are Wright and the lost-lamented Armstrong, and all of my pieces are black oxide: adjustables, impact sockets and extensions, spud wrenches, regular sockets, combination wrenches, etc.
Also dont have to worry about the satin chipping like the chrome ! I had two new sets of wright 2.0 ! Came pre scratched from the factory! Going with the satin 2.0 next! Great video
Very true...it is really uncharacteristic of me to grab something shiny when there are other options, but the sentimental side of me and the Challenger 500s sort of drew me in...they are beautiful wrenches. You can't go wrong with the satin!
My SnapOn Flankdrive Plus wrenches chipped here and there years ago. They get worked every day and worn chrome doesn’t affect the quality of the wrenches. My WrightGrip wrenches Godoy the same thing. Also got some Mac and Matco sets that show the scars of years of use.
Full polished chrome is nice but once you start using alot it gets all scuffed up. I like the industrial look of the satin or black. Actually that black is pretty cool!
If Wright would offer the WrightGrip combination wrenches in an extra long pattern style I’d retire my Flankdrive Plus SnapOn set and my Extra long Armstrong wrenches. I own some WrightGrip wrenches but for daily automotive use a long pattern wrench is much handier. Wright produces the best impact sockets on the market right now. I’ve got thousands of dollars worth of sockets from the tool trucks and the Wright impact sockets outlast and deform to a lesser degree with heavy use.
I replaced some of my old lost Craftsman wrenches with Wright and I have to say that they are just nice to use. They are a little longer and just have a nice feel. Funny you should mention, I still have some Proto Challenger socket sets that I bought in the 80's. Good video.
I bought the satin 7-24mm set of 2.0's and I was a little disappointed with the fit and finish. A few wrenches were slightly bent, the bead blasting of the 11mm was a little light compared to the rest of the set, and the 23mm was cut with a standard 12-point box end, as opposed to the off-corner "FlankDrive" broaching design, or as Wright calls it, WrightDrive. Another thing that upsets me about the satin finish is that on the open end, the inside where the fastener sits is satin, and the face is a grounded finish, and this seems to create a weakness in the plating and I've had multiple wrenches where the plating has completely separated. I have a full-polish 1-1/8 and this is not an issue. Both surfaces are polished and the edge has a nice rounding to it that prevents chipping of the plating. But otherwise, the durability and performance of these wrenches is incredible. For reference, I work on construction equipment and stuff (not sparing tools) generally gets beat on pretty hard.
I’ve purchased both satin & chrome. I am a weakened warrior that wanted to buy once and not cry. I am happy with my purchase, however I’ve watched the reviews that demonstrate that the chrome on Wright”s 2.0 grip doesn’t hold up like Snap on. I get the price different. I purchased a SAE combination wrench set in satin which were new but came with one wrench somewhat with a dent in the box end. As I want to buy American I wish the quality control was up to snuff. I’ve been told to send back my whole set at my cost and they”ll send me a new one. In my opinion most are willing to spend more for American made when the quality is the best. I’ve never purchased a German or Japanese tool that wasn’t perfect. Wright needs to step it up. I did purchase chrome set in metric vs satin in SAE. Looking back the black might have been the way to go over chrome.
I really appreciate this video. I have a set of satin metric and am wanting a different finish for my SAE set. Still haven't completely decided but this helped somehow 😂
Glad it was helpful...that is a tough call. I kind of like the black, but depending on what you are doing that might make them harder to keep tabs on...that is really the only downside to it imo.
I know this is an old video, but was wondering where everyone gets there Wright tools from. I have their big metric set from I believe 7-24mm and a couple larger sizes like 27mm and 32mm but I’m looking to upgrade my SAE set to wright as well. Best wrenches and I also own flank drive plus and knuckle savors. which these are a close second and third imo. The 7-24mm I own are high polish and the couple larger size are in Satin because they’re cheaper 😂
That would be an interesting combo...easy to distinguish between SAE and Metric that way. Sometimes you can piece a set together for slightly less...especially if you start with that you frequently use and fill it in...sort of the route I went in the previous vid, just bought what I use most at work and will then build around it. They shipped a 1/2" instead of a 9/16" as I was just going to have 2x on those.

I have a set of Blackhawk line wrenches SAE & metric..the set was ~$300... and my reversible ratcheting stubby sets in the old school steel cases were ~$380.. not that reasonable..but they're both USA made sets... Edit: I mistakenly mentioned the stubbies being USA made.. I was incorrect..Taiwanese..and I paid ~$240 for the SAE&Metric sets.. The l8ne wrenches (flare nut) are USA made and did cost $280 for the full SAE &Metric wrenches in a nice Blackhawk by Proto wrap..👍
I have those proto challengers at work too, great wrenches, such a shame they aren't made anymore. I've noticed as I've been shopping for full sets of Wright the full polish are usually anywhere from $20-50 more than the satin. Worth it to me though. Still one of the more affordable American made wrenches currently made
Glad someone else can vouch for them...they were killer wrenches. If they were still in production I would have just replicated that set. Wright really is a good buy for such a solid wrench...If you haven't, check with HJE...they have really competitive prices on Wright and are one of the online retailers that you can usually find with them in stock, not just drop shipping.
all the finishes look sweet. not a chrome guy though, or a spanner with a 'grip' function guy. the black looks like they used heat or oil, but that's an assumption, I have never researched these things. i am still kind of puzzled by crazy claims of 80% stronger than any spanner. I found a snap-on spanner buried under dirt, ash and grease. it must have been there 10 years at a minimum. it looked exactly like the black finish. the last 15 minutes of my work day I spray wd40 on all my tools and wipe it off. ratchet handles look new afterwards. would love to see more Wright and USA made stuff
Yeah, it is a pretty nice range of options. The Wright Grip was the original and sort of gets lost in the shuffle with all the flamboyant wrenches coming out today...So many times the fastener doesn't even need something with extra bite and it just chews into the hex head. The Wright Grip is really subtle. Nice find on the Snap-On! I can't lie, the black is really nice! I ougth to grab some of the old stuff at work and drag it home if you want USA stuff, lol.
@@lonestarmopars that's my feelings on them, they are a specialist spanner. Wright being the original is cool, and damn they look nice. I agree the jaws look less aggressive yet still functional. I'm sure I've come across some Wright impact sockets in my time. W was bigger than the rest of the letters and they were very spaced out. The full polish is rework they were considered bad from the forging and the shaft gets polished to take out the forging lines cause Wright Tool does have a standard, they cost more cause they get worked more. The first one is the standard how they were supposed to look like
I watched all video 😂 but I like the black ones but no reflection if u drop somewhere especially me I work on 3500 cat engines in oils field … but I like the chrome ones cause there pretty 🤦🏻
@TexasNationalist1836 it a black oxide coating which is used to help prevent rust and a coating that will not chip off...used mainly in FOD sensitive areas like jets or nasa. If you left these in your toolbox for extended time they will rust to hell without kept oiled. Same coating on your rusty impact sockets. Not sure what the argument is here
You could sell your current set of standard length wrenches and go to town! Other list of excuses, I mean reasons: Upgrade, back up, need 2 wrenches for a few things but bought the full set, black tools are harder to see and less likely to be stolen, didn't have a wrench with a subtle grip, it is 80% stronger and I am trying to avoid injury, better investment than the stock market, other wrenches were getting lonely... Those are just a few, lol. HJE's prices are pretty solid...you can find them on a few other retailers where you can tack discounts with them. Local suppliers can sometimes surprise you with really good pricing, sort of depends on the volume they move. They are definitely a solid pickup...hopefully over time you can make it happen!

I use vinyl detailing wrap to mark my tools. Can even get some thats reflective by 3m and oralite. Comes in about a million colors.
I have an old 1 1/8" callenger proto wrench from a yard sale and you're right they're great wrenches
They really are...if they were still in production I would have simply bought another set. They have held up phenomenally well.

Black rust easy...used mainly on jet engine where chipping crome could get in engine
