Kyoko and Akito are actually so similar. Both abused and neglected, turning their anger to the world that hurt them so much. Due to her isolation, it took longer for Akito to heal and become a better person... In the end it turns out Tohru really is like her dad by helping save her like her dad save her mom.
This was an incredible story and I'm glad you got to experienced it. I'm sure if a movie was necessary, especially with all the recap, but I'll take what they give us. In the manga, we learn about Kyoko's past through Kyo's eyes just after the Cinderella's play, as he remembers how he met her and what she told him about her life. He wakes up after imagining Tohru in a pool of blood, like how he discovered Kyoko back in the day, and went to see her making food with Yuki and Momiji. I certainely would have prefered that over the Kyo fainting because of Kyoko's photo in Tohru's room and the show implying she just left him to rot to make food with these two. One of the few instances where the show missed the mark for me. Funny enough, the last scene between Tohru and Kyo is movie original, and it's nice. As I stand today, I'm more forgiving about the adults actions in Fruits Basket because we don't know their life. Usually, when you act so badly, you're trying to compensate something, to protect yourself, to express your own pain. Ren Soma is the perfect example of that, while Akira Soma shows us how toxic positive people in our life can be as well. We don't know Kyoko's parents story, like we don't know Yuki or Kyo parents story, but we are given some keys to understand. The perception of a child can be very different from reality, doesn't mean the feelings that stay around aren't valid. We know they cared a lot about social appearence, and Kyoko became a delinquant before she even got to highschool. Her mother is obviously very upset and we don't what the "I didn't ask to be born" quote from Kyoko affected her, what it meant, and Kyoko realized it when it was her turn to give life to Thoru. On the other hand, Katsuya always felt trapped by his father, before the loss of his wife made him realize how important his kids might be to him. At least, Katsuya was forgiving enough to let in his new life, to accept to meet him half way. As Isuzu explained to us at the end of the series, it's okay not being able to forgive or move on from your past trauma. Now, as for Katsuya and Kyoko is themself. Sure, it might not be the best of relationship age wise. Kyoko was around 14 or 15 when she met him, she was still in middle school, because we know from the series she never made it to highschool ground, and that she regret it. So, Katsuya would have been around 22 or 23. Do I approve of this ? No. But I know he basically saved her life, and that matter to me. No one in her life cared for her enough to make her life better. Not her parents, not her teachers, not her "friends" from the gang. When you're so deprived of live and affection, it's easy to lash on the first person to ever show you kindness, to accept your feelings without judgement, to make you feel seen. And, no matter what people might say, Katsuya was a good guy. He never took advantages of her when she was his "student" (should I remember people she never attended class ?), he helped her study so that she could make it to middle school, was the whole reason she wanted to quit the gang even if he didn't seem to know about it, and it litterally gave her a roof, food and safety when she was kicked out of her own house. Sure, he demanded that she married him, but he knew about his feelings and wanted her to accept the happiness he could offer, over the guilt she felt be taking care off. He let her have a job, do her things without him, make sure to spend quality times with her whenever he could. He made her realize that sure, she had made mistake in the past, but that doesn't mean she would turn out like her parents for that child to be. He showed her what he believe would be the best education for Tohru, and how they could make amend for their own mistakes in the years coming. He took care of Tohru, he wasn't an absent father, Tohru herself can recall that. As for people saying she reacted to badly to his death because he brainwatched her and was too dependant of him, I doubt you ever lose someone. Might be harsh to here but I've been in Tohru's shoes, except it was my mother who died from illness. And let me tell you my father was a mess, because that's what loss do to a person. We were lucky with my brother to have our grandparents to take care us, but somewhere deept in my heart, I still resent my father because I just felt abandoned when we needed him the most. Overall, it's just heartbreaking to see Kyoko unable to grief, to the point that killing herself seemed like the better option. And it shows us how traumatic that even was for Tohru. She was abandonned twice by both her parents, like Akito. The difference being Kyoko made a effort to change, to be present in Tohru's life, to compensate for the lost of her father. Kyoko worst fear came to be but like Katsuya said, she appologized and embraced Tohru to make her understand it would be okay. And we know how it went own after that. Now, all they need to do is adapt Fruits Basket Another, so we can see Tohru's legacy in the Soma family truly take form.
Kyo's dad is worse than Akito!! Akito was manipulated since her birth, Kyo's dad is just an asshole. And yeahh Kyoko and Katsuya are not a nice couple age wise, but nothing new about that in japanese manga 🥲 Fruits Basket always have me crying my eyes out. 😭
Kyo's dad is definitely worse than akito. Although A lot of akitos actions were unforgivable atleast towards the end She was embracing change. Kyo's dad will never change. Also, every time I hear toru's dad speak I hear Kyoya. from ouran's host club.

That is also how I respond when I hear J Michael Tatum’s voice.
Ah, nothing like revisiting the classic Fruits Basket pain, ah I mean story!
