      @@DustinAbbottTWI Even so I think this lens punches far above its weight class. The sigma and GM both produce only slightly better results with the real reason to buy them being the extra light, which is really something since this is about as cheap as a FF lens can get.

    This review sealed the deal for me. Found a new copy of the lens on fleabay for 400 CDN. Have had it for a few days and am having a blast with it. I'm only an enthusiast, and whatever shortcomings there may be for a professional, they're negligible to me. The bokeh is really impressive for a lens at this price. Af isn't perfect on my A7ii but still better than anything else I have. Wished it could focus a little closer. Colour fringing is visible wide open in very bright settings but still managed well. And sharpness is great even at 1.8, especially when using flash. Very happy with this lens. Great review, as always.

    I just purchased this bad boy last week. I wish I had known you were going to review it. I would have bought it using your link in the description. It is a great lens. The chromatic aberrations can be strong, but the bokeh is very pleasing in most shots, and the sharpness from f2.8 onward is very good. The faster apertures I have been using for more artistic shots. Cheers Dustin! You never let me down with your consistently awesome reviews. I hope you get to review the 24mm f1.8 AF coming out later this year from Viltrox.

    Dustin, really appreciate all the time and work you put into these videos, excellent job, I’m a recent subscriber. One question since you’ve spent a lot of time with this Viltrox and the Samyang 85mm 1.4: After reading through and listening to your reviews, you seem to prefer the Samyang to the Viltrox, although possibly not by a substantial amount? If this is true, can you explain what you prefer? I’m trying to decide between the 2 for my next lens purchase. I’m asking about the Mk2 version obviously….thank you again, great content.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do prefer the extra creative control offered by the larger aperture, for one, and the Samyang really isn't much bigger or heavier, so it seems like relatively little hit to move to it.

    • @jdjames997
      @jdjames997 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DustinAbbottTWI Thanks for the reply, and great advice. I was set on the Samyang and then I read so many bad reviews on the 85mm Sony i was rethinking it. Mostly seemed to be with focusing issues, and inconsistencies from one lens to the next even in the same size. Another popular review said he had the lens disconnect from his camera, which seems to be a common complaint on top of the focusing issues. The Viltrox seems to get pretty good reviews across the board. Biggest Problem with these 3rd party lenses is reliability, it seems. My problem is if I have a paying job, and the lens goes down, I have other lenses I can use obviously, but $400-$600 isn’t chum change either way, so you kinda want and need the lens to work, at least 90% of the time. Thanks again, your reviews are so detailed, you’ve really got a great format here. Cheers 👍

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      People underestimate how much background blur an F1.8 aperture can create with a longer focal length like 85mm. An F1.8 aperture at 135mm, for example, is razor thin because of the long focal length.

      @DustinAbbottTWI  4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes, I agree. Cheap lenses manufacturers learn on the fly whilst lacking the resources to build them up from scratch upon an original optimal concept for quality performance. Petal shape hoods give a "better protection"? Gimme a break.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The petal shaped hood is deeper and provides better, more nuanced protection from the sun. You seem very critical but without any substantive accusations.

    • @ricardoduarte6589
      @ricardoduarte6589 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, well, my dear Justin, your perception on the matter of hood shapes is completely off the reality hook. I must explain to you and to your readers, briefly, the real principle behind each shape vis-a-vis the effects they yield in photography: 1) there are, basically, 3 hood shapes. Round, Petal and Square. 2) The round shape is the most common type of lens hood and is most often used with standard and telephoto lenses 3) The petal shape is used mostly with wide-angle lenses, the special petal shape prevents it from intruding in the picture and cutting off part of the image. 4) The Square shape is used mostly with wideangle lenses. The square corners of this hood prevent it from being seen in the picture..5) ALL these 3 hood shapes are used to prvent side angled light rays diffraction (Diffraction is the slight bending of light as it passes around the edge of an object. The amount of bending depends on the relative size of the wavelength of light to the size of the opening) that causes flare on the image and none of them is specifically deeper or shallower in respect to a given shape. The depth of a hood varies from brand to brand. The petal shaped hoods have been conceived in that way simply to avoid its obstruction when composing a scene with super-angular (wide) lenses. With regard to the technology applied in the manufacture of any given lens it is widely recognizeds by professional photographers the fact that none of the most resourceful lenses manufactures adopt on-the-fly learning curves. The latest state-of-the-art optical technology has been developed with lots, lots of human research and equipment resources, an impossible feat to be achieved through on-the-fly observation. Professionals accept nothing less. We buy lenses brands such as Hasselblad, Leica, Fujifilm, Canon and Zeiss because we don't want to replace them every 10 or 20 years. Buying the best lenses is an investment, better still than the stock market, What we buy today should last and be serviceable for decades. Vitrox, Samyang ant other lesser brands that you seem to be fond of (only God knows why) are certainly not on this league. Finally, Dustin, I do not accuse. I dig out facts. There's no need for you to be so much defensive. Your struggle should not be with your readers but with your conscience.
