The late great Bruce Robertson grew up in Hastings in the 1960s and I'm guessing he followed the great Hawkes bay Ranfurly shield era of 1966-69. The Bay had a great centre called Bill Davis who was superb at making breaks and setting up his wings for tries which I think made an impression on Robertson and his AB career in the 70s.
Yes but Kel Tremain had to take Mattie Blackburn out of the game with a late tackle to keep HB in it. Mattie got 2 dropped goals in that match and Kel Tremain said afterwards "I am not too proud of it but I had to do as he was carving us up'

Number 10 my awesome grandad! He did the drop goal 🇳🇿🏈🏉
Not a bad cricketer too
Indeed, Blair Furlong played a few matches (including the final test) for the All Blacks in South Africa in 1970.
Mr Reliability with that boot.
Bloody awesome...I remember the days like it was yesterday!!
'Glory Days' indeed. Lovely time to be a kid in the Bay. Went to several games, sat on the grass behind the try-line. Couldn't do that now.
yeah I also saw a couple of games..Kelvin Tremain was the man
was thirteen slept overnight to get tickets, didnt matter who the bay was playing, happy days thanks for the memories
Hawkes Bay are currently in their third Rranfurly Shield reign in the past decade
And another era. Current team with Ash Dixon at helm, is not too shabby.
