  • In this video I hold and formidable-looking adult male Dobsonfly (Corydalus cornutus) in my hand! The males live only three days and are nocturnal so adults are rarely seen! While showing off this giant insect, one of the biggest in North America, I tell the story of its life history. What they eat, where they live, and the life cycle from egg to voracious aquatic predator larva to pupa on the banks of rivers to finally a winged adult. Larva spend up to three years in the aquatic stage and are indicators of excellent river water quality. The females also live only briefly, two weeks, long enough to mate and lay eggs. Check out the story of this fascinating insect species.

I just saw a larva dobsonfly for the first time the other day. Figured id learn about it. Oddly though it was coming out of the river by itself, middle of the day, and no thunderstorm.

We found a male dobsonfly on the outside of our store in Kersey, Pennsylvania. On approaching him, he turned his head and looked at me! That freaked me out. I took a picture and ran away.
But thanks to your video and a few others I won't be so terrified if I'm lucky enough to see another. I may have a chance as our store is right next to a little pond.

I live in Pennsylvania and one day I saw a bug that looked nearly identical to this on my dresser. The shape of it was identical to a dobsonfly, but it had shorter mandibles like a female. Unlike a dobsonfly though it was a rusty red-orange color, made a loud screeching sound, and it was MASSIVE! It was bigger than my hand and had to be over a foot long.
I was terrified by the size of it, plus the loud screeching it was making, and the fact that it was in my house. I grabbed an aquarium net (wasn't even big enough to catch it), and managed to get it outside. I tossed the net on the ground and squished it, and HUNDREDS of round red eggs came out of it. They looked like salmon eggs.
Now I have no idea what kind of bug it was, but it looked nearly identical to the dobsonfly except for the color, size, and I don't think dobsonflies screech. Kind of regret squishing it now that I look back because it was really unique and it would have been interesting to try and get it identified.
