italian high command given shiny victory giftwrapped with a big red bow. italian high command tears open present, casts aside victory and plays with the box.............
I'm entitled to make comments like this now ain't I? I am also considering to start making grumpy comments about how things were so much better back among drum machines and mullets. Välkommen i gänget, som sagt.
the legion along with other colonial troops from africa were pumped into the trenches wehere the only difference between them and the metropolitan army was their wore brown and the metropolitan army wore blue. It was used for americans who wanted to fight before the US got into the war. Germans in the unit before the war weremainly bavarians and other antiprussians. they were given the chance to be locked up with honor if they felt they could not serve france, but many were left to guard the colonies in africa because to be taken POW by the germans while wearing french uniforms would have been treason.
GravesRWFiA The legion during the great war, was in the golden age, men came from all over, Americans, Germans, Greek, even Hungarians. Its an interesting thing to talk about, how men from all over our there put there differences aside, and fight together
"Summer's going fast Nights growing colder Children growing up Old friends growing older Freeze this moment A little bit longer Make each sensation A little bit stronger"('Time Stand Still', Rush) Happy birthday, great host Indiana Neidell.
Happy 50th Indy. A really interesting episode. From what I have read the Austro-Hungarians on the Tyrol/Trentino front fought well in comparison to those on the Eastern front, being out-numbered up to 8 to 1 but holding the high ground. The Croats and Bosnians were considered particularly "kaisertreu"', loyal to Franz Josef, and all elements of the army were united in opposing the Italians who were nominally their allies before the war.
That birthday bit at the end really puts things into perspective. It's unbelievable how much the world has changed in such a ridiculously short period of time.
Happy Birthday Indy!! Keep on producing informative content and helping educate people about this incredibly important part of history that has sadly been slowly disappearing from public perception (at least here in Canada)
You're absolutely right about it wasn't that long ago. My grandparents lived through it (which means I'm a bit older than Indy). But doing geneology work dealing with generations vs individual years, suddenly 1776 is like a couple weeks ago. Getting into the 1400's I start feeling a little age. ;-)
Happy belated birthday! Lol It really is sobering when you phrase it like that. Like just 2 of you is the breadth of time that to many feels ancient yet it is so far from such a reality
happy bday indie!! you also happen to be exactly a week and a day younger than my "baby sister", so i will share the same wisdom i did with her: at 50, you are now an antique. get the most out of it you can, because the next stop is "relic", and you arrive quite rapidly.... 100 more, indie, each healthier and happier than the last
I saw comments saying Happy Birthday for fifty years. I thought it was a joke! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, INDY! This really is one of the best series out here on TH-cam. Keep doing your thing!!!
Happy 50th Indy! Keep bringing the amazing content, you've done so much to educate people about this complex war and I can never wait to hear what happens next!
Awesome video. Also,I really would like to know the backstory about the picture you guys posted on Twitter for Indy's 50th birthday. I really want to hear about Indy's 80's band.
The British offensive at Polygon wood quickly ran into great difficulty. On the flanks, they were often blocked by scores of obtuse triangles and innumerable parallelograms. Then the main offensive found it nearly impossible to pick their way through the unforeseen pentagons and, worst of all, a great flood of terrifying irregular trapezoids.
I mean this is just incredible. The whole '100 years later thing' is a great idea and almost forces you to take it slowly and look at things in extreme detail.
A belated happy birthday to you Indy. I only caught your show last month and have been bingeing to catch up. Nearly there now. I hope it'll all be over by Christmas.
Fun fact: 100 years later, this same week in september of 2017, a new battle (albeit a smaller one) started in Ramadi, irak, along the Euphrate river: so called "islamic state" terrorists launched an attack on the city held by regular irakian troops.
I meant iraki, people from Irak. And I am sorry it's hard to tell what I mean but the context should help. www.wsj.com/articles/islamic-state-fighters-attack-iraqi-forces-in-ramadi-1506513073
Happy Birthday Indy! Mine will be on this Sunday (1st of Oxtober), 27th so far. So, as you are half as old as the event you guide us in, I can say the same with you (even with the +2 years on my side).
The Italian high command gives me cancer, and the whole betrayal story is enough to be a storyboard for a movie!
I'd love to see a movie on this!
Happy Birthday Indy!
Indy looks like he just turned 40.
30 to me
@indy
wow. i thought 35 or something.
I do not know what are you doing but keep up! :)
P.S. and happy birthday!
Happy birthday!
HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY INDY! I love your content. Thanks to all the crew

it's because he hasn't bought any of your blue meth
When the Austrians breach your line and offer all your troops strudel to change sides, you know there's no hope

Polygon Wood sounds like a SNES stage.
PS1 more like it.
Nathan Cassidy I was thinking that lol!
happy birthday Indy! You look a lot younger than 50
Reminds me of Kirby Super Star
There was a map in that PlayStation1 game Warpigs called Polygon forest. That game took me and my friends through the early gamer years. 😄😄
Happy Birthday Indy!!!

Can we learn about the french foreign legion, and there role in the great war..
Thanks again,
Alex 👍
Can only imagine how long the wish list is for Indy and Flo for special episodes. Granted, we do our best to make it so long.

I rotated, reflected and dilated my polygon!
*Thousands of men die every day*
If Indy is 50 I'm going to look like a month old corpse by the time I'm 45. Happy birthday, dude.
Happy Birthday, Indy! My gosh, it seems like even when the Italians catch a break, they still cannot capitalize on it.
"A major boost for morale instead turned into a major debacle." That should be the slogan of the Italian Army during both World Wars
Peter Gray 😂😂😂😂
Happy Birthday to our favorite crazy uncle!
Also, suprise hotzendorf!
That twinkle in Hotzendorf's eye kills me every time.
Happy birthday 🎂 Indy great work.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY INDY !!!!!! You guys keep up the great work!
Happy birthday to Indy! Looking forward to another year of the best historical channel on TH-cam!
Happy Birthday, Indy. Thanks for a great series.
What a fascinating story. It's incredible how many times failures in high command led to failures on the field in this war.
Happy Birthday Indy ! Thanks for the hard work to you and the whole team !

I wonder what happened to the Czech soldier who was wrongfully arrested.
I really like the "new" maps with the small map for the overview. Your maps are getting better and better!

Happy birthday Indy ! Keep the brilliant work with the team :)

That was not a fun fact. Any fact involving DAESH is not fun.
That is a pretty interesting fact
Not fun fact*
Happy birthday, Indy..!
Who were some British national heroes in World War One?
Indiana Jones As far as airmen go, Albert Ball is among the greats.
Indiana Jones the Lord Flashheart
Everyone in Black adder 4
Kitchener is an icon from the war but I'm not sure he's considered a hero.
I guess T.E Lawrence became a national hero after the war.
Happy bday!! You apper much younger i should say! Thank you for all the amazing work! Greetings from Petrograd!
Hey, it's my birthday too, 28th September, one year older than you.
Have a happy one Indy... I enjoy everything you guys do... Wonderful concept!
Today is also my Grandfathers birthday.
