  • Baker City grew slowly in the beginning. A post office was established on March 27, 1866, but Baker City was not incorporated until 1874. Even so, it supplanted Auburn as the county seat in 1868. The city and county were named in honor of U.S. Senator Edward D. Baker, the only sitting senator to be killed in a military engagement. He died in 1861 while leading a charge of 1,700 Union Army soldiers up a ridge at Ball's Bluff, Virginia, during the American Civil War.
The Oregon Short Line Railroad came to Baker City in 1884, prompting growth; by 1900 it was the largest city between Salt Lake City and Portland and a trading center for a broad region. In 1911 the city dropped "City" from its name, but restored it in 1989.

It's called the "GYSER" Grand Hotel....it's beautiful here - so much history. Baker is very proud of its town - the citizens are so nice and welcoming.
But right now it's snowing like crazy!! Hope you're warm where you are.

I was there in 95- and 96 in the summertime for an internship. Baker City is such a lovely place. Thank you for sharing the video. Hopefully plan another trip there.

Thanks for making the video. I was born in Baker in 1970, raised there till I joined the Marines in 1989. I haven't been back since 2012. My mom still lives there. Baker used to have a thriving lumber industry until Bill Clinton federalized all the land and then left them with nothing.

Nice, I'm from Western Montana, I would feel at home here. Needs more mountains! I love to be able to stand in the middle of a city and actually see where the city ends. ❤

I grew up in Baker. I lived there from 1987 to 1998. The only homeless people that I saw were people hitchhiking or just passing through. It is a very close knit town that doesn't really let businesses that don't have Northwest or Oregon origins in. You'll never see it have a Wal-Mart or Costco. About the only chains that you'll see that aren't nw owned are fast food joints. They didn't start to get those until the late 80s early 90s. The main jobs are in timber, ranching, farming and tourism hospitality.

High unemployment high rent low wages homelessness but many couch hop or rent at the motels retail shopping needs bast improvement however can get what's needed groceries are outrageous. I grew up here and even wound up homeless for almost a year .Safeway and Albertsons owned by same outsource company the new grocery outlet is better but not what I expected. Winters can be cold then next year snow doesn't stick..most of the historic buildings are deteriorating and owned by those that do not live here ..the inside of the buildings are falling in...and many locals feel that we are destroying records and contribution to the decay of "Historic Baker City"
Summers can be very hot and long ..
Ok so positives... If you don't cook plenty of restaurants, nightlife a few bars and breweries. And a movie theater Redbox churches..
If socializing is a issue you won't be missed and honestly the drug issues with theft and increase crime almost makes me hide at my rental to protect what hasn't already been stolen..
Love the outdoors and in all four seasonal weather it's hands down badass!! But if low income getting to explore can also be strained..
But sure come and live here😁 However maybe an even smaller community for myself and husband appeals to us more

@@curtislong1987 look up the stats before you listen to anybody on here because things change. It is a great town if you are conservative, a retiree or on fixed income and all the people that I met were very nice. I didn't see any homeless people walking around.
