Growers have been increasing the light intensity or PAR levels in the grow room thanks to the increased efficiency of LEDs but how does this apply to Autoflowering plants with their longer lifecycle?
In the past the limiting factor to increasing light intensity for indoor growers was heat and Photoperiod plants (must be on a 12 hours lights on cycle to flower)were the only game in town . Typically the largest HPS fitted in a 4ft x 4ft (1.2m x 1.2m) grow tent was a 600w system and would deliver about 550 µmols/m²/second. Increasing to 1,000W HPS was not possible because of the heat output of the lighting system was too much to treat with extract fans.
Now we have LED grow lighting systems which are almost twice as efficient as the best HPS systems available and so growers are increasing the PAR levels in their grow rooms to 1,000 µmols/m²/second and higher. However PAR intensity levels of 1,000 µmols/m²/second and greater require raised CO2 levels which require closed systems and expensive CO2 cannisters, sensors and controls.
For the novice to experienced grower applying PAR intensity levels of about µmols/m²/second for Photoperiod plants will achieve very good yields from your grow space. To calculate what this means in terms of grow light wattage there is a table to convert this PAR intensity to consumed power for different types of grow light systems: • Photos and Autos Recom...
The average intensity of 900 µmols/m²/second over the 12 hour period equates to about 40 DLI (Daily Light Integral, the amount of PAR reaching the plant over the total light cycle). This is an important measure because, although plants can absorb PAR intensity up to at least 1,500 µmols/m²/second for a period of time, plants are limited as to how much light they can absorb over the total light cycle.
For Autoflowering plants the typical light cycle is 20 hours on and 4 hours off. This maximises the time the lights are on while still allowing a few hours darkness for the plant to 'sleep' and metabolise. Because the day is longer the PAR intensity can be lower to reach the same maximum 40 DLI. Here is the table for the recommended grow light system wattage to achieve our recommended PAR intensity of 550 µmols/m²/second for Autoflowering plants: • Photos and Autos Recom...
There are caveats to consider of course.
If you go over the maximum I have recommended in these tables you should still get an increase in growth rate, it just may not be a '1 for 1' increase i.e. 10% more PAR intensity = 10% more growth, for example it may be 5% more growth for 10% more PAR intensity
It is strain dependent, some are much more suitable to high light intensity than others
Other factors such as temperature, nutrients, humidity, CO2 levels etc can restrict the growth potential from your plants if not optimised

@MIGRO Hi Shane. Would really appreciate to know if I'm understanding this correctly...
Let's say I have 2 separate tents growing Autoflowers, both have exact same spec grow light & no dimmer. If I have one grow running 18/6 with light height from canopy adjusted for PPFD of 617 μmol to get a DLI of 40 mol vs the other grow running 20/4 with light distance adjusted for PPFD of 555 μmol for same DLI of 40 mol; are they effectively both getting same amount of light per day due to same DLI meaning it's more efficient & cost effective to just run 18/6 & forget about 20/4?

It is a very important topic.. I barely leared about that this year! Ive been burning all my autos to a crisp 😭 also, i am so glad I bought a par meter.. They take all the guess work out.. The recommended height for my light in my current grow says 24" at 25% power.. But the plant is in veg and only receiving about 200 - 230 μMols throughout the 2'×4' canopy.. But when I drop it down to 12" at 25% power, I get about 400 - 450 μMols throughout the 2'×4' canopy.. And keeping the power at 25% helps keep temps down.. PAR meters are so helpful!

Thats cool. I was amazed at the fact that the autos i grew last winter, in 4x4 using only two 150w (300w) leds, came out fantastic. The autos i grew outside, the following summer, hated life. Most of the flowers foxtailed and or just didn't look or smell right. Some of them hermmied and self seeded as well. The crazy thing is, I used the hermed seeds for the next round of autos towards the end of summer and they came out awsome with very little anomolies and all maintained their fem/auto status. I attribute the difference in results to the ruderalis strain in the autos. I'm doin autos right now in Nov outside with shorter days and cooler temps and they love it

Quality lights on top, quality ‘live’ soil on the bottom..can’t just focus on one aspect.

I think your assumptions about autoflowers is wrong, in that just as with photoperiods, the amount they can handle varies. Run them 18/6 at 800 PPF, most modern autos will do very well. Some of the older, Lowryder based autos won't be able to handle that much light, but the only real way to know is to grow them! I'm growing my autos under HLG lights, a 650R and a Scorpion Diablo. I'm keeping the lights adjusted to 800-900 PPF.

I've read the 550/600 at the end of veg / early flower as a target, I went for quarter power 150w PPFD for the first 10 days on 24 hours for temps as it's cold here when lights go out.. then went half power 300w giving me par of 309 at 56cm and a DLI of about 20....but I'm really not sure when to lower or turn up the power to increase my Par/DLi readings from here, so a schedule of increases would be really useful shane.

@@ahlers1977 I use 3 gallons in coco. Watering multiple times a day sucks haha but looking to get something automatic installed. I’ve found that by doing 3 galling coco coir with a salt based fertilizer such as flora-flex or something similar, I get some pretty big plants, typically each plant is easily a quarter pound at minimum, so 4 plants is a pound harvest at least which supplies my smoking habits between harvests.
Another thing that helped me (maybe not so much if not using coco but not sure) is Rainscience grow bags. Much easier to clean and reuse than your typical fabric grow bag, better root pruning and more airflow to the roots. I found as soon as I started using them my plant size had to have doubled as I was getting much smaller plants doing my same coco-floraflex in normal fabric grow bags.

So I have 2 tents with bar style LEDs a 4X4 with a 480 watt light and a 3X3 with a 300 watt. I want to use the 3X3 to grow autos on a 18 on 6 off schedule and veg my photos that will go into the 4X4 flower tent. I will grow maybe 2 autos in 5 gals and have a few photos in 1 gal pots vegging. How much should I dim down the 300 watt light in the 3X3 and keep everybody happy ? Or is this just a bad idea to veg photos and run auto in the same tent ? I'm doing pretty good at 75% but sometimes a leaf or two will curl up on the young photos especially if its a sensitive strain. I guess the real question is should I get a par meter and do the math.

I don't know about you Shane but with a proper array of these new LED's you have reviewed for me, I have switched to 12-1 veg with 8 on 16 off flowering cycle, also known as GLT with great acclaimed results. Harder to find info about but it's also an old professional practice in Agriculture and it sure works great, and lightens up the load on the equipment, plant stress, excess nutrient uptake, and quit a few other things. This would only be ideal for Photo period and most likely not autos in any way. Also I would use 16 on 8 off for autos if I didn't refuse to grow them. There are now "fast" photos available lately that make the need for auto use even less to me. Thanks for all the help Shane, hope to hear someone looking into 12-1 or GLT (Gas Lantern Technique) in future!!!

It's good technique for stopping flowering, just putting the light on for 1 to 2 hours halfway through night period, saves electric, but you can get a more little stretch than normal. It doesn't work for autos, you just end up with crap .

so 40 moles of light per day, is that the most they can absorb?
i have read and heard it said that after 40 moles of light the returns start to diminish, which would suggest that there are still some gains available after 40 moles.

One 600W HID in a 4x4 is a bad choice to start with, 4x 150W HID would be easier to handle temp wise and offer better, more equal light output, but I think 4x 125W would do just as fine. Lower temps overall even with four heat sources, you can get closer to the plants and maintain an even par output. Just saying four horses can pull a lot more than one strong one.

I've been running up to 55, sometimes even a 60 DLI with autos over 20 hours. Can't complain they can take the upper end with the right conditions (nutrient concentration, leaf surface temps at 81-83°, humidity 65-70% and co2 supplementation). Worst case scenario your buds get slightly foxtaily, but fr they slap in yeild. I always plant more than I need to fill the space and pick only the all stars to fill up my arena. But till day 30 my autos never see more than 30 DLI, then by day 40 when I'm seeing heads they get to around 40 DLI and peak flower I really push them hard. Hard nugs starting to amber by day 65 on 80 day strains. Conesseur shiyt

Hi Shane, thanks another great video, I've been looking into the frequencies from led light and hps lighting, apparently the high frequencies of led can effect the plant growth, what I found out made me change all my bulbs in my house to the old filament bulbs which are now extremely hard to buy, they didn't give us led to save us energy there's a very sinister plan behind it all.

Give me some links.. But yeah, seems kinda weird they put out something that doesnt last very long either.. There seems to be some imperfections with LED all together.. I noticed around here they changed alot of the street lights to LED and it hasnt even been a year and 1/4 of them are either burned out or flickering.. And LED bulbs for the house, same shit.. They tend to burn out super quick.. Like not even a full year.. That always made me curious about why would they put this bs out and glorify it.. It saves money for 1 year.. Then you gotta go buy new ones.. Fuck that.. But damn they do keep the electricity down quite well.. So when you say frequencies... You're talking about the 50-60hz that are on damnnear all electronics?? Does it have anything to do with the Shuman Resonance?? Really curious about whay you are talking about...

Given the relative low levels of blue in the spectrum, should I supplement by hanging a propagation LED strip like the ones from Sunblaster to enhance the blue spectrum and hopefully reduce stretching of inter-nodal lenghts? Or, is this not a concern for this particular light? I have height limitations in the grow space.

alright shane, you might not be super familiar with this or i'm asking it in a strange way, but i'll give it a go anyhow:
for photos: when using hps 600 the averages of feeding ec/ppms was like what 1,6/1,8 in flower?
now with leds you might need to go up to 2,2/2,5 in some cases. (even have seen commercial running 2,5/2,7 in veg! and weirdly dropping in flower to 1,8/2.0...)
with autos, everyone suggests half or even 1/4 feed. however with leds you might run normal feeding schedule almost. any thoughts?
