VoicePlay's lineup can get confusing, especially after the past couple years where it has changed. Lemme give you the rundown of what you'll find on their channel. Early videos feature Geoff: bass, Layne: vocal percussion, Tony Wakim: baritone (he is now co-owner of Pattycake Productions, a video studio he co-owns with Layne), Eli: tenor 2, Earl Elkins Jr.: tenor 1. Tony is recognizable by his incredibly on-point eyebrows and lovely, lovely eyes. Earl has the physique of a bodybuilder (in Oogie Boogie's song, he was the fellow with the beard) and a piercing, laserlike high tenor range. After Tony left, J. None replaced him up in the baritone role. Earl left the group in mid-2020, and in May (I think) this year J. None left to join the Navy band, leaving VoicePlay down two members. But not long ago, Cesar De La Rosa (the frog prince in this video) joined them, though I'm not sure where he is placed, vocally. There's still an open slot in the group; hopefully they will fill it soon and give us a stable lineup that will enable them to start touring again.

I believe on their website they classify Cesar as Baritone/Tenor 2!

SO GOOD!
Geoff, more than any other bass, tends to actually "sing" like a bass guitar part instead of part of the harmonic chord. When you combine that with Layne's percussion you get a better background in my opinion. The bass/beat drop by Geoff and Layne at the end is shocking and J's voice is just perfect for this role. Eli has such a depth to his voice that tends to get underrated and Cesar adds such a smooth addition to the group!

VoicePlay practically own Halloween by now, if you want more spooky songs I recommend This is Haloween, Hoist the Colours and Kidnap the Sandy Claws.
Geoff always moves his hands when he sings, he said that it helps him, I think you can actually know when he's going low just by the movement of his hands lol.

Yeah, he has two distinct gestures that signal the low notes. He either underhand pitches them at you, or he sort of...um...spanks them? I don't really know how else to describe it, sorry. It seems like he tries to minimize the second one a lot of the time and that's noticeable here.
Oh, I forgot one. The gracious offer, where he sort of pulls it down and hands it to you.
Another new one that is unbelievably good is "Hoist the Colors" from Pirates of the Caribbean. And it was only July that we thought that their new cover of Fiddler on the Roof's "If I Were a Rich Man/Girl" was outrageously good (and it IS that good, it's just "yesterday".) You may also like their performance of Warriors from early 2020 - they broke rules, but omg it's good! Just wait until you hear Layne play violin...

Funny you mention all of Geoff's moments in this. He said before Layne's arrangements always have him in the basement more than his own lol. Sure enough this is Layne's arrangement

VoicePlay continues to amaze me with top-class productions. And I loved all of your detailed points on the vocals! Actually one thing that was new and interesting was the bell-like "oohs" that they did @7:00 it's an effect that I've never heard from them before. Love you Jennifer!
Voice Play are known as the Theater Kids. Geoff & a few other original members worked at Disney when they were younger. You can say they own Disney cover songs.
Their gesticulations help enhance the atmosphere they create as they perform. Truly selling the viewer/listener on the experience
Yes, Eli is the “belter” in the group for the Tenor notes. J None has such a wonderful voice for runs. It was nice to see him for this Halloween treat. “This Is Halloween” is another by VoicePlay cover that is not to be missed. Thanks for your reaction and especially for the analysis.

that little part at the beginning where they are sitting down the backing vocals are saying "re-lax, oo ooo ooo"
No musical background here, so I learn a lot from reactors. One thing I really like about your analysis is that non-pros can learn a lot. I now watch their faces because of you pointing out the way the way the mouth is shaped affects their tone. I notice that Cesar (adorable as the prince) often has his mouth in the classic "oh" shape. I would love to hear from you how that affects his voice. He has a lovely bell like tone in his singing - is that part of it?
Great find!! I think I mention that shape during his riff on an ‘oh’ to an ‘ooh’ vowel and because he has to reach these high notes, being a little smaller and narrower helps with the transitions areas😊 great that you noticed that throughout!
In the Little Mermaid Medley, J-None plays the part of Sebastian. He was still a full time member of the group then....
You really want to listen to Voiceplay's Bang and/or Man in the Mirror with Deejay Young. The runs, especially in Bang, are incredibly interesting and we'd really be interested in hearing your take on those.
J None is not back in Voiceplay for good. He is still in the Navy, which he left the group for earlier this year after being with them 3+ years. This just a guest stint, and hopefully he can get away again for some collaborations.. He is perfect for this Disney villain.

Another fun reaction Jennifer! I do worry about your channel being shut down though. If YT finds out that you don't begin the a performance with saying " So, without any further ado--" like most reactors do, they may come after you. Also, I am drowning in my tearz because you didn't attempt the low notes. Last but not least, I am going to lay on the floor and hold my breath until I turn blue if you don't do one more Halloween based song by Jeff! The Headless Horseman is so much fun! JK, I'm almost 70 and I can't hold my breath long enough to turn blue!

I feel like Voiceplay claimed Halloween the same way Pentatonix took Christmas, but it honestly feels more authentic somehow. And as for Geoff; Yes, obviously the drop, and anytime he's front and center, but his backing bass on this one is especially excellent as well. The vocal percussionist is Layne, and it's such an under-appreciated position in general, but I feel like he especially blends in to the background BECAUSE he's so exceptional at it. You kind of forget it's a voice doing that. Layne and Geoff do a lot of the arrangements as well, and I think that's probably ideal because I can't imagine anyone else really knowing what to do with voices like those
Oh, and Eli's ENERGY.

When it comes to Geoff, his cover of House of the Rising Sun is currently my favorite of his, having unseated Sixteen Tons... though I'm also quite partial to his Country Roads. When it comes to VoicePlay, there's Oogie Boogie... and Queen in 5 minutes as some of my favorites of theirs... but they all do a pretty amazing job on anything they do XD

To this day I think that VoicePlay's best piece is "Queen in 5 Minutes." It lets all 5 of their members shine, especially Earl, their old Tenor 1 that you haven't gotten to hear much of yet.

The "Oogie Boogie's song" should be a very good next react song. Fit the spooky theme perfectly.
She has already done that song; it was her first VoicePlay song review. However, VoicePlay also presented This is Halloween and What's This? from Nightmare Before Christmas. which I think Jennifer should react to as well. Go for the trifecta!

I have recently discovered Voiceplay and Geoff, and am busy going through the playlists. Perhaps one-day though Geoff and I will have to debate on the better spelling of our name 😝. He is one of only a handful of artists whose voice I could listen to all day. Looking forward to many more great review, and maybe you'll help me find more great artists to add to my list.

Awesome reaction and analysis. Their bell tones and harmonies during the card section sounded a lot like Take 6 and Boys2Men. For a none a cappella song, you should take a listen to Something by Snarky Puppy ft. Lalah Hathaway, amazing vocals.

I'm going to commit the mortal sin of criticizing the octave drops in Geoff's solo lines. I think they detract and distract from the arrangement. We all know he can do this, but in this rendition I believe they are completely unnecessary. They don't fit. Later in the piece, when in harmony with the others, these notes blend perfectly. Just my two cents. J.None kills btw.
Not dunking on you for the criticism at all, but isn't Geoff playing a character here (a "friend on the other side")? It seems to make sense that he'd be otherworldly and sing in a darker tone and lower octave to fit that vibe.
Man, Eli is short
Honestly this is one of the few songs I don't like from them. The original Facilier had such depth and growl to his voice that J None is just missing and it takes away from me
