Coming in really late with this but this is my favourite song/video ever. The back story to both Hozier and Sergei Polunin is so poignant to this video. Sergei is a Russian ballet dancer who was principal dancer for the Royal Ballet but became disillusioned with the constrictions that came with it (no tattoos, specific movements etc) he thought about giving up Ballet altogether. Hozier made Take Me To Church and the video hit a chord for Sergei because it featured homophobic violence based in Russia and the comparisons made between his own love of dance but unable to because what he wanted to do was frowned upon. Sergei created a dance for Take Me To Church and Hozier saw it and asked him to create a dance for Movement, Hozier gave Sergei free rein and the video expresses Sergei's multiple and conflicting characters within himself on his journey before the Royal Ballet, (dancer with tattoos) at the Royal Ballet (in white tattoos covered up) and where he is today (main dancer who is running from all of them but will always be there) Watching the video again knowing this back story gives the video and the talent of both artists much more meaning. Love it.

Yeah...Hozier is a once-in-a-generation songwriter. His live performances are as close to perfection as a recording artist can hope for. Any track from his self-titled album, Shrike, Arsonist's Lullaby...God damn. This song is mediocre in comparison to what he has to offer.
I love this video. It makes me think of my uncle, who struggled with addiction most of his life. He was just the sweetest, most kind-hearted man. But he survived really terrible abuse as a child. For some reason, he got the worst of it from my grandfather, out of all 3 kids (my dad was "lucky"- he mostly just got ignored). My uncle was preyed upon by a family friend who got him hooked on drugs extremely young. Because he needed a father figure, and this guy really took advantage. Saw he was a brilliant kid that was really loyal and really starved for love. So he got his hooks into him to use him to get money from, and adoration (this guy was a real narcissist. He still is. He is actually my great-uncle on my mother's side. My mom and dad met because their families were friends) When my uncle was high, he was really volatile and unpredictable. He just let that anger take over in that state. But his true self, deep down was so beautiful. When he was sober, he'd give you the shirt off his back, and his last bit of food. He defended those who needed it, and took no shit from anyone who was a jerk. But his emotional pain from the violence and hate he endured as a small child was just so overwhelming. It was like he had two versions of himself, and that controlling, toxic demon was always stalking his steps, lording over him. I miss him so much. He really didn't deserve the life he experienced. Literally every adult around failed him. He's in a better place now, as he passed from cancer a couple years ago.
Yes! That's what I got out of the video as well I remember Sergei (the dancer in the video) saying he either left the Russian ballet or was kicked out or something because he didn't want to be controlled basically. And I think that version of him at the end is supposed to be the part of him that was in the ballet (notice that version had no tattoos and was clean looking)

I love the song, never thought about the video though. I’m thinking it was the individual struggle between the professional classically trained version of him vs his more primal raw being. With each elevation, he gets closer to realizing the true potential of merging the two but it’s a battle. The raw version of him wants to win, but in the end it’s still a struggle that the raw side will break through by any means

That ballet dancer's been cancelled because he saw fit to tattoo Putin's face on his chest and make homophobic rants on instagram maybe a month after this video was released. Which put Hozier in a terrible position because he's a known ally of the LGBTQ community and was even most known for his music video that criticized Putin's homophobic policies and rhetoric...😥 This music video was never mentioned after that... He could probably sue for the damage that brought to his promotional marketing.
