    Glad to have found your channel, Paul! :)
    I'm a VERY new Booktuber, so I am STARTING a TBR and it's already getting larger and larger. It doesn't help that I only read one book at a time. Perhaps, at my age, the idea of keeping all the various characters, plots, etc. organized in my aging brain intimidates me! ;)
    I'm just in the last book of the Farseer Trilogy and I LOVE Robin Hobb, but I'm going to take a break from the Elderlings to perhaps check out Brandon Sanderson's The Way of Kings.
    Or maybe I'll treat myself to a book that has FEWER than 700 pages! LOL!
    I'm happy to be one of your newer subscribers. Thank you for the recommendations! :)

      I read the Farseer Trilogy back in high school and really enjoyed it. I definitely need to get back into more Hobb!
      I have a whole video on the Cosmere if you're curious on places to start. The way of kings is great but if you want something more digestible, I'd absolutely start with Mistborn! Great entry point into Sanderson's writing.

      @@Paul_Todkill Thanks for your comment. I did read Mistborn and it didn't do much for me. I'm hoping The Way of Kings will be different. :)

    Oh, you have some interesting books ahead of you. Abercrombie start off good and just gets better for every book (possibly with one small exception, but let's not get to picky). The latest (last?) trilogy is some of the best fantasy I've ever read. On the other hand, Gwynne's Shadow of the Gods was one of the biggest let-downs I've ever experienced for a fantasy book. Rarely have I experienced such a huge gap between the hype and my level of enjoyment. So that was a DNF after the first one. Anyway, that's some unsolicited opinions, but hey, this is the internet you know. Thanks for the content! Keep it up!

    • @Paul_Todkill
      @Paul_Todkill  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not the first one to call out Gwynne! Now I'm more curious than anything. Had you read Faithful and the Fallen beforehand or was Shadow of the Gods your into to him?
      Abercrombie only increasing is insane to me as he was basically already a 10/10. The fact he continues to get better is just wild.

    • @JohnAnderssonSWE

      @@Paul_Todkill regarding Gwynne: I normally avoid promoting my own videos in comments, but my reasons for DNFing the series are here: th-cam.com/video/FmiOn4nn9y4/w-d-xo.html so I'll just post the link instead of an overly long reply.
      Abercrombie: Yeah, it's a wild ride for sure. However, when I re-read the series, I did find some flaws when it came to the plot of the first trilogy (though worldbuilding is good and characters... well just amazing)

      @@JohnAnderssonSWE Just watched it! And yeah plot wise it's kinda.. bleak lol. The lack of resolution I know really irked some people. To me the characters and the humour were just... the best. The best, no question.

    • @JohnAnderssonSWE
      @JohnAnderssonSWE 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Paul_Todkill no argument there. I think the issue with the plot in the first trilogy is that it's really hard to summarize. The question "what is it about?" is hard to answer. Fortunately, the other aspects of it make up for it. Btw, if you like the humor and characters of Abercrombie, I would recommend checking out "the Crimson Empire" trilogy by Alex Marshall.

    You have some great series to read there. Abercrombie and lynch and that big old wheel of time. Plus Gwynne, which I haven't read as much of but Malice was solid. And Cook, god I love some old man glen cook. Black Company and Garrett P.I. are two of my favorite quick reads (because they are shorter books, generally). I hesitate to add anything to you tbr, because it seems so packed but my favorite underrated series is The Traitor Son Cycle by Miles Cameron, which starts with Red Knight which centers around a truly awesome siege. Happy reading.

      I've heard good things about Miles Cameron!! Will absolutely add it to the list. It's already robust but we out here reading ahaha. I'm so determined to be at a point where someone is like "have you read this?" I can be like "YES!"

    Don't know if you have read them but I'm sure you've heard of "a song of ice and fire" and "the storm light archives" those are must read imo also mabey the king killer chronicles but I've really come to hate the author for how he's handling his fans and everything going on with the final novel that I don't believe will ever get finished

    • @Paul_Todkill

      Read all three! Some amazing books. Will be doing a review on Wind and Truth when it drops. Rothfuss is a scammer and I have zero desire to continue to support his work, even if he releases Doors of Stone.

      I feel like it's like saying you're a sci-fi fan and you've never seen Star Wars. One of those 'pay your dues' series. Really wished I'd been exposed to it when I was younger because I would probably have loved it in high school.

    • @JeshuaHicksAuthor

      @@Paul_Todkill honestly, same. I'm more or less taking a break from classic epic fantasy. Not really a decision, just something that's happened. I may try book 3 someday but it's not a priority. I've got too many other things I want to read anyway. I see why it's legendary, even this early. But from what I've seen online, it doesn't really get "better". Or there are whole books that are just bad. It's not very appetizing.

    • @Paul_Todkill
      @Paul_Todkill  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah I'm going to get through... Ideally the first three, then go from there. There are just too many good books. I feel like I could read 30+ a year for the rest of my life and never catch up.

    I have heard about the Lies of Locke Lamora, that it is a great book, but fantasy elements are only optional and this book would be just as good as it is, if set in the real Venice.
    I really wonder why the English youtubers are so crazy about John Gwynne's books. I read the Faithfull and the Fallen. They are enjoyable books, not very demanding, very well suited for train travel reading, but overall this series is just mediocore. Totally clichy, characters are living embodiments of fantasy stereotypes, fightings/combat is laughable and also an ammount of plot armor is riddicullously high. I just don't comprehend all that hype.

    • @Paul_Todkill
      @Paul_Todkill  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Interesting! The Gwynne comments kinda lines up with what I've heard tbh, just really prototypical high fantasy (but done well). I play a game now when I see a new fantasy booktuber because the spines are so distinct, I feel like they're on 90% of shelves and are constantly recommended. I'm curious to read it, and see where it lands!

      @@Paul_Todkill I don't think that he executed this particularly well. The main character is just too clichy, his girlfriend just reeks of being a Mary Sue. Even her introduction is like that: the teenage girl like no other, not interested in nice clothes, but better in combat than grown men and already slaying giants. Some side characters are nice. But not the main ones. Also a problem with plot devices and plot armors. It is kinda funny how one character, who is a great archer has many times main evil guys on this target, but at the last moment something happens and he wasn't able to shoot them properly.
