First off, this is what a man secure in his sexuality looks like. Loved the reaction. Secondly, I would like to point out something tho. I dunno how it is for gay males, but as a lesbian, I don't really like when people say - oh so you're the female in the relationship? Or infer we are reenacting heterosexual gender roles in relationships. I.e. no one is the man in my relationships, that's kinda the point lol. I don't think you said it to be malicious, so don't take that as an attack, please. I understand it's a question/assumption that most straight people make, and that's fine. Im just here to offer my perspective as someone who has received that question. (RE: "so I guess he's the fem, if he gets married he would be wearing the dress" comment near the end of the video) sending love.
I think the idea that there has to be a fem and masc was such an inbedded in idea it will take a while to shift that. When I got older I realised just how ridiculous that concept is there's many relationships that are cis and straight that don't have the opposite energies and now that your community is seen more and speaks openly (thankfully) it will eventually become a thing of the past. I take my kids to pride and make sure they learn from the community rather than other straight people like I did being born in the 80's
And the Cosby Show had an episode where all the men were pregnant and that was in the 1980s. Arnold Schwarzenegger was pregnant in the movie "Junior" etc. The people complaining now forgot they grew up watching stuff like that.
I really enjoyed your reaction. I’m a gay man that grew up in a conservative Christian home in the 70’s/ 80’s. Your comments about how parents raise children really brought up a lot of emotions in me. I thought “am I still not healed from that?”. I “did the right thing” and married a woman. I have 4 wonderful children. We basically made the same mistakes until we left our evangelical church, divorced in 2010 and started thinking differently. I came out in 2011 at age 41. Still haven’t found my long term man. I very much appreciate your manner and how you interacted/reacted to this video. I’ve also seen the more uncomfortable reactions as some others mentioned here. Thank you for being on here doing what you do.
Yeah the video was a way to tell a dynamic story in such a short period of time ....also at the end when hes walking down the isle to get married ..there was noone to get married to...billy porter handed him a guitar and it was like a way to signify that he's married to the music
I just want to say as a gay man I’m so appreciative of all the lil Nas x mv you guys have reacted to including this one. No judgement at all, also it’s nice to see how a man secure in his sexuality as yourself never make things awkward watching an artist live in his truth
I liked that Lil Nas X used the Brokeback Mountain movie as a theme in this particular video to express the pain that some same-sex relationships experience, i.e., men on the DL. Your discussion was on point when you both talked about how some parents allow their children to be non-conforming in their choice of clothes, toys, colors, etc. Notice the pink and blue colors of the football team in this video and the pink uniforms of the inmates in Montero State Prison in Industry Baby. I feel LNX uses the colors pink and blue to make a statement about what is considered to be masculine vs feminine in our society, conforming vs non-conforming. (BTW, that's actor Billy Porter, who is the minister at the church who hands LNX the guitar in his "dream" of getting married.) I thoroughly enjoy your review of all his music videos!
I just freaking love your reaction videos! Some stupid people are being soooo nasty to Lil Nas X, and u guys not only are respectful but also intelligent on understanding the messages, not judging and so and so 😍
@Rafael Martins Lots of people getting upset are no doubt unpacking trauma themselves- all LGBTQ+ people OWE the queer Blpoc community everything, so we need to try extra hard to understand that Montero Hill the person is trying to uplift people just like he was- like Chiron and Kevin in Moonlight. We owe Bayard Rustin, Marsha P Johnson,Silvia Rivera, Storme Delarverie... Think about it..
Also, l understand why you are upset at the phobes- l don't like them either, but l DO try to draw from my experience as a kid and try to encourage and try to educate others...
It’s not a right of passage for a man to wear a dress. It’s rock music. Lil Nas X is literally shredding a guitar! Bowie! Seriously people. Gender bender has been around for a long time and Nas X is utilizing all these influences to great benefit. And no, this doesn’t necessarily mean if he gets married he’s gonna be in a dress or he’s the woman. 🤯🤯
I think the concept at the end was that until he finds love he's going to marry his music career I like lil Nas x his music is good and his videos are edgy and interesting and make you think
You guys need to watch gay wedding first 😁 coz it's not compulsory that someone should represent feminine and wear the bride outfit , both can be husbands for eachother 😊
Lesbians don't leave women for men. There is some toxic, homophobic thinking driving that assumption. A lesbian might leave a woman for another woman, but to assume that a man can do something for a woman that a woman can't is an attitude completely out of the 1950's in some Baptist or LDS state. And, by the way, when gay men get married, they usually wear suits. Where do you get these attitudes?

Two things (long comment warning): 4:12 starts a conversation that I genuinely don't think is meant to be biphobic, but starts an interesting conversation about gender and fidelity that a lot of people have questions about/don't fully understand. Men can't offer what women can and women can't offer what men can, but that's because _no_ partner can offer what a different partner can. Everyone has individual traits that they bring to a relationship. I think the scene (that is a reference to Brokeback Mountain) is supposed to represent how so many people are living double lives because they are afraid of the repercussions of coming out (and in this video, specifically, both men are football players so there is the added element of being a celebrity that parallels Lil Nas X's life in a way). 10:22 In queer relationships, there isn't really a fem/masc sliding scaling because the gender roles will inherently not be heterosexual. To me, Lil Nas X is playing with tradition, saying that he wants a "typical white wedding", while obviously playing with the expectations of what "typical" is because he's the one in white. He spends the whole song talking about wanting love, which is a common thing to want and typical to sing about, but goes about it in a way that deviates from the standard of what's been shown in media so far. He's taking tradition and expectation and holding up a mirror so it's flipped--he's doing nothing wrong at all but knows that it's going to make people uncomfortable anyway. These are all great conversations that you'r having, and I love that you're not afraid to talk out your thought processes because it's unrealistic to believe that everyone is going to "get it" the first time through. What you guys are doing is amazing, great video! (If anyone disagrees with me or has an alternative view, please feel free to interact!)
