    Harrow the Ninth - go in knowing that you're going to be confused for about 80% of the book, no exaggeration. Just strap in, stick with it, and know that it will come together and blow your mind in the end. I loved Harrow even more than Gideon, which I didn't think was possible. Tamsyn Muir is so capable with the "threading" she does in her books -- there is SO much payoff at the end of the book, and so many ties back to the first book, it truly builds off the incredible foundation that Gideon laid down.

      Oh ok, I'm excited to pick this up now, I love being confused when reading so I actually have to think 😊Thank you for this, I'm definitely doing to read this one soon!

    Donna Tart's Secret History was the hot book in the early 90's. I remember an acquaintance who was enamored with it. On book reviews and book show programs she did the circuit. I can't believe its been almost three decades.

      I hadn’t appreciated how long it had been around either until after I had read it!

    Annnd subscribed. Welcome to booktube. I've been curious to pick up Priory of the Orange Tree and I think I'll get to it this year. In my experience, the polarising fantasy books tend to be the ones most worth checking out.

      Thank you! That’s a good point actually about polarising books, i definitely think Priory of the Orange Tree was amazing, and lots have said the prequel is even better ☺️

    Welcome to booktube! Excited to hear about your TBR for this new year. The Secret History is one of my favorites as well & im currently almost finished with book 1 Mistborn. If I were to recommend a book to you then it would have to be my favorite book of 23 which was Piranesi by Susanna Clarke.

    Welcome to booktube! I really gotta read The Secret History soon, I've had it for years!
    Also, here's a few books that I think you might like:
    Best Served Cold - Joe Abercrombie (A disabled woman goes 'Kill Bill' on medieval mafia.)
    Babel - R.F. Kuang; and The Will of The Many - James Islington (Both of these are Dark Academia Fantasy.)

    Welcome to booktube from a fellow Rebecca! If you like dark academia, I recommend A Study in Drowning as it was one of my favorite books of 2023. I've had Priory of the Orange Tree and Gideon the Ninth on my tbr for far too long 🙈

      I actually read a study in drowning! I enjoyed the vibes of it, but just felt like more could have been done with the plot. But Ava Reid’s writing is so stunning, definitely picking up more of her books this year 😊 really recommend both of those books too, hope you enjoy!

    No one shall buy thee’s sunken treasure soul,
    although you squint into the phone you bought.
    Rapunzel’s psyche turned her hair to gold.
    Too much you wonder why your hair is not.
    The wealthy think they bought you with their bills.
    Perhaps they did. Conformed, you sold yourself.
    Your selfies hinting of eclipsed freewill;
    thy face a treasure map you shouldn’t sell.
    Rapunzel’s greatest comb, a shard of glass,
    but are you brave enough to cut your hair?
    or take your buried treasure spirit back,
    depart, escape, the 9 to 5 career.
    In freedom, hair becomes a human brown.
    Our broken mirror combs belong to us now.
    my name is Nicholas Leonard, and this is a sonnet that i wrote

    Welcome to booktube from a fellow Rebecca 😄 I've heard so many great things about Gideon the Ninth but keep hesitating adding it to my tbr because everyone says the world building is intense. But did you say there's lesbians??! Sign me up!

    • @rebeccasreads
      @rebeccasreads  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! Yes it’s definitely a sapphic book which is something I always like in a book! I didn’t find the world building too bad but it’s just one of those reads where you’re confused for like the first 80% about what’s actually happening, but I enjoyed the mystery of it and working it out 😊
