Dumpster Find and Repair - Beverage Refrigerator

  • I found this nice beverage and wine refrigerator that was on the side of the road with a sign that said working. Upon testing, the lights and temperature systems worked, but the cooling function of the refrigerator did in fact not cool, unlike the misleading instructions would have you believe.
After a couple of minutes I discovered that the start relay was bad and proceeded to order it from a well-knownn online store. In this video I walkthrough how I came about discovering that the relay required replacing it and testing it. I also spent some time pondering why the previous owner had written it was working and why he/she may have misled passerbys.
I spent $10 on a single-part replacement (relay 4.7Ohm). Now if only I had a use for this soda refrigerator.

I have a question, I replaced both the overload and start relays, and my wine chiller s still doing the same thing, the compressor turns on, then clicks off after a moment, I filed down the female connections a bit but that didn’t help, any suggestions would be much appreciated.

It's not a relay. It's a Positive Temperature Coefficient Resistor, 4.7 Ohms when cold. It allows current to flow through the start winding to start the compressor motor. As it warms up due to passing current, it's resistance increases to keepnfrom burning out the start winding. The M (or R) winding runs the motor. Inside is a nickel sized disc with prongs touching each side under tension. It doesn't take much of a resistance increase in ohms, maybe to 11 ohms when cold, to keep the motor from starting so it just sits there vibrating until it gets hot enough to trip the thermal cutoff switch. As it cools the thermal cutoff cools and resets and keeps doing that until it's turned off or, worst scenario, the cutoff doesn't reset and it burns out the compressor or maybe even starts a fire.

I replaced the resistor as shown in video. The fan is working and compressor hums infrequently. The problem I have is the temperature display only stays at 61°F. When I try to adjust it to 45° it goes back and displays 61°.

@@bobagnew9377 It's probably reading the current temp. Usually when you chnge the setting, it will display the set temperature then revert back to the actual temperature. It will take time to get down to the set temperature. If it never does, it's likely the compressor is bad.

Was the compressor running before replacing the relay? Mine seems to be running, making noise and heating up. all the fans are running inside and out, but never gets cold.

Mine is a magic chef brand. I plugged it in and it cooled. The only issue I noticed is that the back wall of the mini fridge froze up. I noticed the same wall that freezes is flaking off (the plastic wall). Any ideas to fix that?

The "relay" regulates power going to the start winding on the compressor. The start winding gets power for a few seconds or less, until the compressor starts running, then the disk heats up and the ohms go up, making the start winding get almost no power. When the compressor turns off, the disk cools down and the ohms become less, allowing power to flow to the start winding when the compressor restarts. This type of starter is a common part to fail.

Wow, thanks Landon, I wondered why this "Disk" was so big, that makes a lot of sense. That a great design.

Hi there, my cooler works but the condenser fan motor is quite load and the compressor is also hot to the touch. does one screw hold the fan in place? Could the overload protector be malfunctioning? Thanks

  • @rgruenhaus

I was hoping to see the pins you connected the relay onto and also I'm replacing the overload on the one pin first. I'm having a hard time seeing in mine well enough to position the overload part first with the one pin the the relay with the two pins.

Do you have a voltmeter/ multimeter? Make sure the switches are on. The light appears to have its own circuit and transformer and should come on when it's plugged in. It could be burnt out. The rest of the circuit runs through the thermostat and turns on the compressor and fans. You may not have fans and coils on your model. The newere ones run the refrigerant tubing up the side walls and let the sheet metal dissipate the heat and condense the refrigerant. So if nothing comes on, you could have a bad plug or power cable. If the light comes on but nothing else, I'd look at the thermostat not closing the switch. If you can handle a multimeter you could check voltages or ohm out the wires, plug, and switches.
