    I love the way you film favourites (with all different categories). Having struggled with an eating disorder for a few years now I would suggest that people with an ED be careful if you're thinking about reading The Time In Between - I haven't actually read it, but according to reviews it could be triggering. Just a heads up!

      +Hannah Witton I didn't mean to come across as patronising at all x I didn't realise numbers weren't mentioned (so thank you for clarifying that) x

    The Revenant, I found to be a really touching film on the horrific ways first nations people were treated way back when. So, idk, that could be a thing you could watch?

    • @misanthropyandpuppers2691
      @misanthropyandpuppers2691 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** I'll admit it's gruesome, but it's not scary. I found a lot of it to be quite peaceful, the gore is just, part of the experience of the movie.

      +likewildfires Viola Davis and Alfred Enoch are brilliant in it, as is Tom Verica (appeared in many of Shonda Rhimes' shows, and has directed many episodes of Grey's Anatomy and a few of Scandal/The Fixer too). Great show!

    Reading 'Room' at the moment, I love everything you've said about it. Especially that a lot of it is misspelt because it's from Jacks perspective. You should watch 'Beasts of the southern wild' if you haven't great perspective from the little girl, it's also very varied out with black people and white.

    Kids of any age can be nominated for an Oscar; they compete with the adults these days. The Oscars had a separate (smaller) statue for kids to compete for against each other up until 1961. In 1962, Patty Duke did The Miracle Worker, was nominated for an Oscar and competed against adults instead of other kids, and won. Since then, kids and adults don't have separate awards. *fun trivia*

    Fantastic video! I've been meaning to watch Beasts of no Nation for a while now, but I need to be in the right mood for a film with a heavy subject matter!
    As for my favourites for January I'd have to say kittens! I've just moved in with a couple of very sweet cuddly kittens 😊 I've not been reading it cover to cover but I have dipped in and out of Culpeper's Complete Herbal which is facinating if you're into that sort of thing!
    I re-watched the second season of Rupaul's Drag Race as well! Just fabulous!

    I think I'll definitely check out The Time in Between. I've never suffered from Anorexia/Bulimia but I have had and do still get extreme anxiety over what I eat seeing as I used to be very overweight. Also I was kind of annoyed with Beasts of No Nation for not specifying a country or making up a country as I felt it was kind of saying that civil war/tribal warfare in Africa is all the same, whereas in reality each country and each conflict have their own set of specific causes. It's to simplistic to say that the cause of each conflict is 'tribal warfare'. I know in reality the film wasn't really about this and it was so emotionally powerful that it made me cry solidly for five minutes afterwards, but that was just a small gripe about it.

    if you liked Beasts of no nation, I really really recommend checking City of God, a Brazilian movie dealing with violence by criminal organizations in Brazilian favelas, starring a cast of extraordinary (mainly) non-professional "local" actors. It's a thought-provoking, disturbing and beautifully crafted film!

  • @Fram383
    @Fram383 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ok, A) YES! Asking For It is an incredible book! I read it at the end of last year and it blew my mind, I think it's a book that everyone should read so I'm really glad you're recommending it to people. And B) I would highly recommend to read both The Color Purple and The Girl with All the Gifts. Both are fantastic and will help to add some diversity to your reading! Once you've read The Color Purple you could then watch the film which is also amazing, and once you've read The Girl with All the Gifts you can then rage about the casting choice in the movie for Miss Justineau. I need more people to share in my pain.

    • @Fram383
      @Fram383 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Francesca Fox Ooh, I'd also highly recommend reading The Handmaid's Tale. It's an incredible book about a dystopian future where a totalitarian Christian group have managed to take over the government and how women are then treated and used in this world. It's fascinating and disturbing.

    Ava Duvernay (director of Selma) posted a list of films on twitter the the other day, all directed by and starring women of colour. Maybe worth a try for diversifying? Belle, which is on there, is a FANTASTIC, devastating but lovely film. Also, I loved the podcast/video for Asking For It, can't wait to see where the book club goes! :)

I mean, I understand that the time itself excist but there are so many things that often discracts me when I feel like reading!I want to read more (new years resolution!) but I find it hard to concentrate. When do you do it? Before bed or on the tube and so on...? AND ALSO: Very well said about diversity, taking it in and I'm on it! AND LAST: Love your favourites videos, and also your whole channel! TACK from Sweden

    Just the physical way that Idris Elba becomes his character alone deserves an Oscar. Not to mention Abraham Attah's performance, the cinematography, the writing. It is really unfortunate that it wasn't given more press, Oscars or otherwise.

    Re the Oscars and age limits - there isn't one! Quavenzhane Wallis is the youngest to be nominated for best actress (I believe) - she was 9 when she received the nomination, for a part she won aged 5. The film she was nominated for, Beasts of the Southern Wild, is a-m-a-zing and I definitely recommend it!

    A book I really think you would like is A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara. I can't even begin to explain it. It's so good. Though I will give you the warning that there is only one female character with any sort of substantial role, which was a bit annoying. However, the book is so good overall, that I barely even noticed that fact. It's also super depressing, but in a good kind of way (at least to me it's a good depressing, but I like sad things).

  • @LordOfNothingreally
    @LordOfNothingreally 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Room reminds me of one of my favourite movies, "Life is Beautiful" where the Jewish dad and son are swept up into a concentration camp during the Holocaust and his attempts to hide the reality of the situation from his son, pretending it's all a game and how the other prisoners get such joy and relief in joining in the fantasy as a means of escaping their own horrors and what once could be considered a cruel delusion becomes a very real way for love and spirit to exist in such a dark corner of history.

    I always really enjoy your favorites videos ! Also super excited for the book club ! I would like to point out that with the whole diversity thing I don't you should include something by someone of color if you aren't crazy about it . Regardless of who made it if you didn't enjoy it that's fine . You didn't seem that into creed and I know want to include everyone but it's ok to criticize something even if a minority makes it. Like I'm ok with admitting I like the old Annie more than the new one that is more diverse.

    • @CrazyLyn013
      @CrazyLyn013 9 ปีที่แล้ว
