- Brigadier Sarvesh Dutt Dangwal, recipient of the Vishisht Seva Medal, is a graduate of the National Defence Academy, Pune, and the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in 4th Garhwal Rifles (Nurannang) just before the 1971 India-Pakistan war on November 14, 1971. He actively participated in the historic conflict in the Western sector, gaining on ground and direct combat experience. Serving in the infantry, he did five Army Courses, excelling in all, particularly the Junior Commanders' Course, where he was the best student.
Due to personal reasons, after ten years of service, he opted for a permanent transfer to the Army Physical Training Corps (APTC) on October 4, 1981, joining the Red Stockings family. In 1986, following orders from the Directorate General of Military Training, he was appointed as a member of a Study Group to assess the Indian Army's physical training system and evaluate physical performance. The group aimed to develop a new system and tests, establish exercise routines for physical training in challenging areas, and recommend exercise schedules for serving soldiers in headquarters and institutions. After five years of enthusiastic research and study, the Study Group submitted its report, which was approved by the Army Chief for implementation in 1992, marking a historic change and which is still in use by the Army .
Brigadier Sarvesh Dutt Dangwal commanded the APTC institution APTI, Pune, from September 2004 to March 2006. During this tenure, he brought about a knowledge revolution, energizing his human resources and instructors with new enthusiasm. Later, he transferred to the Army Training Directorate, where he established the Mission Olympic Wing, redefined the principles of physical training, and, before retiring in October 2007, took on the unprecedented responsibility of Chairing the Games Technical Committee for the Fourth World Military Games, receiving acclaim.

On June 30, 2008, he retired, spending his life with his family in Dehradun. Post-retirement, he authored two books, "Passion For Courage - A Winner's Creed" and "Ustaad - Oral History of the Red Stockings." In these books, he shares personal experiences and thoughts, hoping that current and future generations of officers and soldiers will be inspired by his ideas to prioritize skillful leadership, better health, excellent character, and fearless conduct for personal and organizational benefits.

कोई ऑफिसर नहीं दौड़ता, केवल शान में टहलता है, कोई प्रधानमंत्री जी, और रक्षा मंत्री जी देखने आयेंगे, नीचे से ऊपर सभी ऑफिसर आपस में एक दूसरे का पीठ खुजाते हैं, डिसाबिलिटि पेंसन लेते हैं, सारा फायदा उठाते हैं, सैनिकों को तो कुछ पता नहीं है, वे तो सेवादारी करते हैं, कुत्ते घुमाते हैं, सब्जी लाते हैं, कपड़े धोते हैं, बच्चों को स्कूल छोड़ते हैं, यही स्थिति है फौज में और यही सत्य है, जय हिन्द
Officers unit में राजाओं की तरह रहते हैं और officers'mess में ORs के ration से parties होती रहती हैं।

Today a young officer takes pride in sitting in office when he should be in ground to play,and COs are encouraging it. In one unit a physically unfit obese yo was awarded GoCin C C on the spot on recommendation of CO because he was his adjutant and kept sitting in office till 2359h.. Officer s are discouraged from being physically fit by playing games. Meaning offr clerks are encouraged and rewarded as against physically fit.
I am saying because I have two sons are in army .
You are right in some cases but i am from a unit that never missed PT and games.
OTA chennai must be shifted out to some good weather place to save precious lives. We have lost many GCs to exertion in hot and humid weather.

बड़े अफ़सोस के साथ कहना पड़ रहा है कि हमने काफ़ी सेना अधिकारियों को बहुत मोटा पाया है । दूसरी ओर युवा लड़के लड़कियाँ आज कल जिम में समय बिता कर फ़ौजियों से भी ज़्यादा फिट हो गये हैं । यह स्थिति को हर हाल में बदलना होगा ।फ़ौजी अधिकारी का मोटा होना बिल्कुल भी शोभा नहीं देता । सेना तो अपने अनुशासन से फिट हो जाएगी परंतु हमारी पुलिस की हालत इस मामले में बहुत दयनीय है । पुलिस को भी ऐसे दिशा निर्देश दिये जाने चाहिये और इनकी फिटनेस को सेना अधिकारियों द्वारा टेस्टों के ज़रिये प्रमाणित करवाना चाहिए ।

Very informative though long. Brigadier saheb , i used to run Half Marathon ( 21.23 km) in mumbai every year till Jan 2019. I was 62 years old retired Banker . Due to Covid for 2 years, I could not do and now my endurance has declined . How to gear up atleast some level so that i can walk 1 hour and 10- 15 minutes jogging . Your valued suggestions are appreciated.

An eye opener on fitness in the Army. He has been a role model in service and not post-retirement. Why do we lack a culture of fitness? What should be fitness and diet for keeping yourself healthy? और फिटनेस अच्छी बात है और यह चीज अधिकारी को भी लागू होना चाहिए सेना के अंदर बीपी फॉर्मेट है पीपीटी फॉरमैट है जवान दौड़ते हैं पर अधिकारी नहीं दौड़ते हैं तो सेना में इस भेदभाव को खत्म करना चाहिए फिटनेस या रूल रेगुलेशन जो भी है वह अधिकारी जवान सबको लागू होना चाहिए और हम भारत सरकार और संविधान में एक सैनिक है देश के सैनिक है ना कि वह कोई और नहीं होना चाहिए
