My dad told me: do not trust people who do not trust people. I sold over 11000 items and I was scammed once and I gave the scammer a clear idea I understand what she was doing (I told her I will videotape how I open the return). I had a few customers that sounded like potential scammers but they were just confused or overreactive. PEOPLE ARE GOOD!

Remember the potential scam, the lot of like 13 baseball hats you sold, the guy had a story that you sent too many and wanted a refund for 1/2 of them. I can't remember what the hat is, but you still have a few left. You told him to keep the extra hats!

If you get into reselling, three things are certain:
Eventually, someone will try to scam you (though it’s rare).
Occasionally, someone will return an item (it’s not very common).
These situations can be frustrating, but here’s the good news:
Most of the time, you’ll sell items to happy customers who are genuinely grateful for your service! (This happens often!)

Regarding the boots: M or W could also refer to Medium or Wide width. The last time that I had a potential buyer asking questions are were all addressed in the title & description, I merely responded, "All of those questions are addressed in the item description. Have a nice day." I never heard back & they didn't buy the item.

Last month I had someone message me about a shirt. They asked if it was button down, pit to pit measurement and if there was a stain at the bottom of the blouse. My thinking is you are asking about a stain but can’t tell if it button down or the measurement. They were super aggressive with their messages so much I was really thinking of blocking them and not selling to them but did. I didn’t feel really good about it but she had over two thousand reviews so I sent the shirt anyway. I even told my parents I feel like this one is going to bite me in the butt. She received her item and left a great review! I was shocked I 100% thought I was going to regret the order. Thankfully everything worked out!

I've had scammers but only a few when selling things i no longer want. Once someone said the shop/collection point gave it to charity because they were too late to collect. I did my job and the made sure it was signed for and the shop recorded that they recieved it. So i was protected.
The other was my phone where the person said it didn't work, that they sent it back, then that they will send it and then they would send it within a few days. Returns time elapsed and the case was closed. Again protected

I wouldn't call buyers scammers, but definitely picky. Sometimes tons of questions before they even purchase it - this is when I have lots of photos, the specifics very clear, the description has additional information they do not read. We go back and forth with questions and answers, they purchase and then want to return it saying They Changed Their Mind. Now if I get that type of thing happen - thankfully a few times a year, I block them. And I don't block just to block.... this is when they constantly pepper and pepper with questions. It's not normal.

I sell a lot of Cds and when I started out I didn't think that perfect jewel cases on a $7 CD would be a thing. But audiofiles are really offended if they get a less than perfect case. Even if in picture. If someone has two questionable questions they get blocked, bad questions up front means trouble on the back end of sale.

I didn't respond. She went to ebay claimed she made police report so ebay refunded with in 15 mind of opening return. I have contacted her police station to make my report. The number one issue why CD players. DVD players and VCRs whether they're combo or not. Will have an issue if you just put it in a box and make sure that the item isn't moving. Is that the head is still moving inside? If people remember when they bought a DVD/CD/VCR player you will usually find a piece of styrofoam pushed in somewhere, keeping the heads from moving that you have to remove. That's strofoam is actually locking the head with pressure so that it doesn't move. So until you learn to MacGyver those types of Styrofoam pieces so that you can make sure the VCR, DVD or CD player heads are not able to move 1 mm and that you can put it in so that customer can easily remove it you shouldn't have a problem, especially if you tested it and it worked perfectly before shipping. As I has sold a Bose CD playing radio had to go to the other side of the country. And I knew about that technique that the CD player head could not move out of position and so I put a piece of Styrofoam in the slot, making sure the head was pressed and unable to move the Styrofoam was firmly in it, it didn't jostle and move? And package it up and wrote a note to the customer taped to radio that they had to carefully remove the Styrofoam before playing and got a positive review. It worked perfectly and they were very, very happy.

I recently had a buyer contact me and ask if I would take down an expensive item and sell it to him off eBay. That made me feel like it might have been a scam so Ii explained to him that it was against eBay policy to do that and Moved on. It could have been an attempt at scamming me because I would no longer be covered under eBay policies, or any other protection except the insurance from the USPS.

Great video. I guess I've been lucky... I've had 1 scam in my many years of selling. The buyer rec'd his item (a ring), severely destroyed, yet NO signs of damage to the outer packaging or the ring box it came in. Literally, the ring was in the shape of a V. He wanted a refund and suggested it wasn't worth shipping it back, since I couldn't fix what was done to it. I refunded the $9 (no big deal) and then discovered he's a seller on eBay, selling rings (like the one he purchased) and his store name described exactly what he did to the ring, to get a refund. BTW, I could tell from the crappy photos he sent, that was NOT the ring I sent him. A few months later (while stalking his store), I noticed he rec'd negative feedback from one of his buyers. It was his response to the FB that caught my attention. He accused his buyer of trying to keep the item yet wanting a full refund. Ha! Karma is alive and well!!

Every sale on eBay has the potential to be a total loss, so Sellers have to be prepared for it on those occasions it happens. This is especially true with the way USPS is sending out letters about Seller's, who open claims, telling them they have to bring the damaged items in for inspection or are loosing packages for weeks. The result in all cases is a partial or total loss of income on that sale. Same is true for most INAD claims. The minute the claim is opened most, if not all your profit, has evaporated. Sometimes it's a loss of profit, plus sipping, plus cost of goods and invested time. It is the nature of retail sales. 😉

Being Scammed vs Being Taken Advantage of, because of eBay’s Policies are very different things. I agree that outright scam attempts, especially on experienced buyers, are rare but Buyers who use eBay’s policies to get discounts, force INAD returns or try to get free items by opening cases, when USPS is late on deliveries are much more common. Some sellers see no difference between the 2 situations because they often have to take the hit. 😉

I'd say less than 1% of buyers I have an issue with. Rarely do I get a scammer. Though I do get the odd fishing for partial refund. Main thing is to put yourself in a position where you won't have an issue. Show serial numbers. Do a video if it has moving parts. If you've done sell similar make sure all the item specifics are correct etc.

Knock on wood, thankfully the only true "scam" I've encountered in my 25 years of selling was a sale outside of ebay on my own website about 20 years ago. Plain and simple credit card fraud. Something ebay has always protected me against in recent years now that I do all my sales there. Stopped using my own website in 2010 as the fees were eating me alive. As others have pointed out, drama gets clicks. Ebay's not nearly as dangerous as a lot of people would have you believe, and your business is bigger than one bad apple.

If someone were to "scam" me out of a $10 item I would barely blink. 1-2% of your sales will always have issues whether you think it's a "scam" or something else. If you're selling $1000 items then perhaps you'll need to worry about scams a bit more.
