If you thing throwing a dirty yogurt cup to be recycled is eco-friendly, then get smart. Anything that has residue or is inconvenient to handle gets burned anyways or lands in the ocean. Cleaning it is not profitable. That is how it really works. Not to mention shipping it around the world on a container ship and transporting it on a truck twice. Nothing is done domestically anymore. Those days are long gone. First world labor is too expensive and have too many rights and safety laws to produce an acceptable profit margin for the shareholders. In about 15 years Greta Thuenberg might actually learn that stuff in school. If she actually understood how things work, that is where she would be instead of preaching to a room full of corrupt gullible politicians who only care about keeping their non productive pork job. Your commercial would be a lot more compelling and would be shared a lot more if you would have demonstrated the machine's operation and maybe show some bricks burning in a stove.
There's no harm in it, as long as it burns completely. It's the half-burnt gases that it emits when burned at temperatures too low that make it stink and smear stoves. But once it's compressed so that all air is pressed out, it should burn pretty cleanly. And burning it for heat is definitely more environmentally friendly than leaving it to be chopped up by the weather into tiny pieces that will float around for hundreds of years.
Polystyrene is actually safer in a wood stove than a knot in a log. It is an aromatic hydrocarbon. It burns completely. A knot is full of resin which burns hot as hell and can cause a creosote fire. Actually any plastic is safe in a wood stove. They don't burn hot enough to cause damage, and in the environment of a hot firebox, generate no black smoke or soot as carbon combust at 500°C in air. That's how a self cleaning oven works. If you just light it, if course you get thick black smoke. The carbon is released into cold air instead of a hot fire burning at 800°C. In pyrotechnic terms the practice is called co-firing and works wonderfully.
