I follow Ian Fennelly for some years now, with fascination for his drawings. A real ongoing inspiration. I was planning to go to Porto with the main purpose of attending his workshop. Then personal problems broke in and I couldn't go. I am so very, very, happy to have this glimpse of his seminar! Thank you very much, Anne, for preparing and posting this video. And thank you very much, Ian, for the generosity of allowing us to have access to this.
Hi Mauro!! I am so happy I was able to share with you this bit of the workshop after you were unfortunately not able to attend his workshop!... I was not sure I wanted to attend some workshops last year but I decided I would do so because of artists I really wanted to learn from, especially Ian. 😊 Thank you for your comment! 🙏
Very eye opening. Ian really shows how to break down the process so it’s not so intimidating. Less watercolor and more drawing. Thank you so much for sharing and you did a beautiful job editing. Music is perfect!
Ian is an artist local to me, and although I’ve only managed to go out with the Liverpool urban sketchers a couple of times, on one of those occasions I was sat next to him as we sketched the liver buildings. I recognised his work as I was already following him on Instagram, so it was nice to put a face to all the beautiful paintings I had seen online. I love his work, especially his pictures of Merseyside and Cheshire as it’s usually places I recognise. I was surprised as I watched him paint though, with that first blobby watercolour layer, and then, TaDaaaa! Just a gorgeous, bright and juicy urban landscape 🥰🥰
Haha, that's fun that you had this same reaction as the folks he is talking about in the video. 😅 😂 Kind of : what the hell is he doing, spreading paint like that on his sketchbook?!!! 🤣 But no matter the technique, a sketch quite looks like nothing when you start : it's more in your head than on the paper and people can't read you mind!! 😉 That's nice indeed to put a face behind the art and to learn to know better and these artists and their process. 😊 👍
Good morning my idol! I’m still laughing at “ I could draw forever!” That’s me exactly! I’d love to take your course, face to face. I am in Salem, Massachusetts. All day here, it’s all about you. Thanks for sharing.
I love this, Anne-Laure! I love his teaching style- the way he broke it down into 3 phases, and I love the way you shot this video! Under 10 minutes, but chock full of information and Inspiration! I love every one of your videos, and always get excited to see Following the White Rabbit pop up in my notifications. Thank you!
I am fairly new to sketching and I love watercolours, love his approach and explanation. He makes it look so effortless, and I love Porto so much. My only question is - the people that disliked the video - really? Whyyyy???
He's incredible! His urban sketching are dreamlike! I've never painted an urban landscape before, but I think I will try. And I totally agree with him: observation is the very first thing (whatever you paint), but it's a thing that you develope as you paint. Thank you Anne-Laure for this interesting video😍!
YES!! I know Ian - we attend the same sketching groups on Merseyside, UK. He is the loveliest guy - so generous with his knowledge, knowing full well that no-one could successfully copy his technique!! What you see is what you get with Ian - I encourage you to try his workshops.
Love Ian’s sketches. I have been studying them for a couple of day before I found your video. I was surprised by his technique but it does make sense. Thank you for sharing!
This is fantastic! I love his work and it is almost shocking how differently he approaches the process. His manner is so fun too! I hope to get an opportunity to take a class with him someday. Thank you for such an inspiring video.
great video. I have always been wondering how Ian achieves his unique style. I am surprised to see his technique starting with the colours and adding the details later. It never seems to work when I am trying this. Must remember the 3 phases when I try it next. Very interesting. Would love to attend one of his workshops some day!
Wow, his technique is really neat! Yes, I want to try it. I will try on landscape though because I’m far from the city. I wonder what will happen. Now I will try to find Ian on the Internet. Thank you so much for this video and the exposure to his technique.
Great scouser accent!! I have met him a couple of times, he's a great guy! Each time I meet him I ask to attend his workshop but it either sold out or I forget to book or I'm working. The workshop is today in Liverpool, again 'sold out'!! I will go there and just see If anyone doesn't turn up? I will one day attend his workshop! Hehehehe.
Lovely to see the art work emerging. Great technique too. I do wish the person behind the camera had shown us more of the actual view that was being painted also.
I really like his work! This reinforces the last video. Sometimes it's easy to get discouraged over your work when first starting out on paper..but just stick to it. Thanks for the post!
Yes, you're right, it's all about the journey!! The journey of looking, the journey of sketching, you can't just start and decided you are already disappointed without even putting the effort. 😊 👍 For sure, this is a nice metaphor! Thanks for your comment, Jason !! 😃 ✨
Wow!! This was so helpful!! Thank you for sharing!!!!! I love your videos and one day I want to travel and join in a group teaching like this one!!! Excellent:)!! He is a great teacher and artist!! You are too :)!!! Hugs from California:)!!!!
Thanks for sharing this, it is completely opposite to the approach i take at the moment, but I think it would allow me to be a lot more expressive so I'll try it next time
Awesome video! I love Ians' work and this just makes me want to do a workshop with him sometime! Thank you for sharing Anne-Laurie and have a great time in Amsterdam!
Thank you Treava! 😃 You won't be disappointed if you attend a workshop!! This was only 3 hours but maybe he is even teaching workshops of a few days?! 😆 I will try to share a few casuals videos from Amsterdam is I manage to do so! 😊 😘
Ian sounded like Lily Savage when he talked about people looking at your work when you're beginning! "Eh, are you an artist? You're not very good are you?!"😂
Ian, I noticed that the start of this painting there were gobs of watercolor going down on the paper, followed by brush pens, fine liners and back again with some more paint. The other day I saw another piece you did online that starts off with just outlining the whole piece with the brush pen and fine liners and then some paint. How do you decide how to approach what you se in front of you? Thanks for your advice, FW
Thanks a lot for video! Very interesting technique. I've bought such both sides watercolor pens but really couldn't find right way of using them. And was thinking why I spent so much money to buy them :-). Now my eyes opened :). I want to try such way of drawing, hope after some attempts I will succeed in drawing something deserving at least a glance ;-) .
hi! I am glad you liked the sharing! 😊 imo, with the Tomboy markers, you don't want to fill too big areas (I made this mistakes too) but it's really nice for contact shadows and giving a bit of depth like Ian does in the video. 👍 Have fu with it!! About what you say at the end "hope after some attempts I will succeed in drawing something deserving at least a glance ;-) "... did you watch me last video about when we don't like our own work?!! 😉 Happy sketching !!! 😃
Hi Judith! 😊 For sure, not every technique can apply to us but probably there is something interesting to pick from each artist approach that can suits and inspire us in a way. 😌 I also need to think less and draw and paint more, absolutely !!!!!!!!! 😆 😅 😜 😘
Tombo brush pens are not lightfast. But not everyone is obsessed with lightfastness . Urban sketching is not about selling the paintings, it's about painting on location.
Thye Run Ngo didn't know the pens were not lightfast but I guess in a sketchbook that's not such a drama. Plus, as it's not the only tool used and just a tweak, maybe that's not such a bid deal if they fade just a bit?...
I love his work, but I always get squicked out when I see his sketchbook and all his materials on the dirty sidewalk. 😬 I want to be able to do what he does, but not if it means laying out everything on the ground.
God Ian that silly woman talking in your video is driving me nuts !!! Jimmy hear loved sketching with you with the Liverpool urban Skechers ,I’m living in Australia now ,if your ever in Perth your most well come for a cup of tea and a slice of cake
Hi Alvin thanks very much for your concern. Anne contacted me a while back asking for permission and explained what she was going to do. I'm absolutely okay with it all, as it just gives a teaser of what I do.
the editing /music on this vid was spot on!
Wonderful lesson. Please thank Ian for sharing!!!
Great video! So beautiful to watch the emergence of a great picture!
Been following some of Ians drawings sometimes he added colour afterwards and here adds to start with - can't wait to join these drawing groups

I love that this has been sped up through the less important parts!!! Great end result!!
I am obsessed with this video 🤩🤗❤️🥰🎨🖌👏
That was amazing! Thank you for sharing this experience with us.

Thank you! I’ve followed him for a bit and so fun to see his process.
Did you know Ian Fennelly? Do you like his work? 😊 Are you suprised by his technique?! Do you think you may want to try it?!! 😆
This is exactly what I want to try! I need to do this, for not going into details too soon
I always get caught up in the drawing & have to add the paint later. I just love this technique
. Thanks so much for sharing!
I didn't know hime but Wow! I love his work, so thanks for the discovery. And yes, the technique is surprising but makes me wanna try it.

Thanks for this awesome video of the master! Love this, and the song, AND Porto!
This is fantastic! I love his work and it is almost shocking how differently he approaches the process. His manner is so fun too! I hope to get an opportunity to take a class with him someday. Thank you for such an inspiring video.
Enjoyed this technique and Ian's energy. Thank you for the demonstration. I will try to see how it works for me.
Great video Thanks for taking the time to schedule and record it. Great way to start my day on holiday
A great informative session! Learnt a lot. Thanks Ian 😊

So insightful! Have been following him for years on Instagram but never really got to know how he does what he does. Thanks for this!
Love the technique .
AMAZING 👍👍👍
A more challenging how you reacted on things in front of you during sketching , specially people around observing. I love it!
Thank you! was super helpful to understand the structured way of seeing things!
Not seen this before, brilliant stuff, now I know how to tackle my home town!!!
Interesting and unique technic
Wow! Loved watching t his - so helpful - more please!!

Lovely to see the art work emerging. Great technique too. I do wish the person behind the camera had shown us more of the actual view that was being painted also.
Brilliant!!
OMG -- I recognize this exact location in Porto!! We stayed at the hotel right there, a couple of years ago. Loved the city - and country!!
I really like his work! This reinforces the last video. Sometimes it's easy to get discouraged over your work when first starting out on paper..but just stick to it. Thanks for the post!

Thanks a lot for your compliments!! 😃 🙏 You're really welcome! 😘
Awesome video😍
Ian sounded like Lily Savage when he talked about people looking at your work when you're beginning! "Eh, are you an artist? You're not very good are you?!"😂
Thanks for the video. I found it very interesting and inspiring. I really enjoy ink and ink wash so found this approach interesting.
For sure it is!! I am glad you liked it too Karen!! 😊 👍

what color pencil brushes is he using? thank you!
SUCH a dynamic and interesting place, but SO public 😐😊

@@FollowingtheWhiteRabbit :) Thank you for encouraging words! Will use your advises and watch the video you mentioned.
I wonder what paper he is using? Thanks so much for posting this video - loved it.
Fabriano paper.
Its already 2020 and this one is all I needed😅
I think you are so happy.
Brush pens - could you explain them please?
Hi, do you know what brand of "brush pens" Ian uses? Merci beaucoup 🏴 ❤ 🇨🇵
I found them on this link! 🏴❤🇨🇵
studio56boutique.com/pages/ian-fennelly-workshop-supply-list
Impressive but I don’t know if that translates to me. I need to think less, draw more, paint more and allow experiments to happen. Love your videos.
Hi Judith! 😊 For sure, not every technique can apply to us but probably there is something interesting to pick from each artist approach that can suits and inspire us in a way. 😌 I also need to think less and draw and paint more, absolutely !!!!!!!!! 😆 😅 😜 😘
Tq for the video madam. But the brush pen color will fade over time? Are they lightfastness or permanent?
Tombo brush pens are not lightfast. But not everyone is obsessed with lightfastness . Urban sketching is not about selling the paintings, it's about painting on location.

Bleuvertetforetdepin Thank you for the info and answering the question! 😊 👍
Merci beaucoup!!!
Ravie que cela t'ait plu Jolanda! 😃
He taught me at my primary school
Thanks a lot
😊 🙏
What kind of palette is he using? Sorry for my eng
I love his work, but I always get squicked out when I see his sketchbook and all his materials on the dirty sidewalk. 😬 I want to be able to do what he does, but not if it means laying out everything on the ground.
I have tons of Tombow pens and never use them
that pigeons still there.
Draw architecture using exaggerated perspective. Color in with primary colors. Repeat.
Ok, got it.
it's pretty weird because he turns the buildings into caricatures. More expressive versions of themselves.
I thought for sure Istanbul was the greatest city on Earth. I think it still is, but Porto is right behind it.
God Ian that silly woman talking in your video is driving me nuts !!! Jimmy hear loved sketching with you with the Liverpool urban Skechers ,I’m living in Australia now ,if your ever in Perth your most well come for a cup of tea and a slice of cake
There always seems to be at least one in every workshop or class.
That lady firing off it is such a turn off, just keep it to Ian please! She adds nothing but detracts!
Dear Anne, Did you get Ian Fennelly's permission to post his workshop on your possible profit-driven video? I think this is not nice.
Hi Alvin thanks very much for your concern. Anne contacted me a while back asking for permission and explained what she was going to do. I'm absolutely okay with it all, as it just gives a teaser of what I do.
Love u. Please lower your voice. Where ur pitch is lower. Thank you
Dawn C Foster grrrrrrrrrr
Loved the Ian part. Could have done without the intro from Screeching Harpy.
less talking more painting
