Im sure he uses Windows Server for its better compatibility with other Windows machines
@@prec1sion548 We have a fair bit of video evidence that he doesn't.
Besides, Samba can be plenty fast, and it's not hard to set one of the Linux/BSD file server distros up for windows domain users. Also, windows server gets kind of expensive as you add more users.
I can't remember seeing anything about his domain controller, though - that might still be windows. (Though you can make a perfectly workable windows domain with a Linux server these days.)

Appreciate your efforts 👍😁🙂
>not using the rear sata drive slots for boot
>you know, the ones accessible from the outside
>so if one of the boot drives dies, you're now going to have to power down and open the chassis to replace it
But your uptime, tho
Not really a problem in this situation, as the server is probably only used during office hours. Just power it off when nobody is using it and replace the bad drive.
5:33
It appears he knows, but wants greater speed. *Shrugs*
MrDucktastic for a proper NAS, the boot drive speed doesn’t matter. Once the operating system and relevant applications are loaded into memory, the steady-state performance of the server is unaffected by boot drive speeds.
@@KeeganDent Yup. I'm not arguing the point, I assume he's got his own reasons. Just linking the part of the video where he addresses it.

Aboot time for him.
Seasonic makes AMAZING power supplies, I ran one almost 24/7 in a gaming rig for about 8 years and it was still within 1% of rated voltages.
Passed the PSU on to my dad who still runs it in his desktop 12+ years after I originally bought it. They don't have to pay me for an ad spot, their products are just ROCK SOLID.

Run a "nix" OS and use ZFS; I work with petabytes & exabytes of GIS data as an engineer and that's what we use. I'd be curious to see what a striped mirror ZFS setup could do on that beast you've got there.
Why not BTRFS? (/s)
@@cinquine1 Because this is a production environment and while BTRFS is neat and has some useful features which mirror ZFS in functionality; we are required to use something with a long-standing proven pedigree.
@@MrJw2319 Aha yeah hence the /s, BTRFS is way too sketchy for that.

"Intel is in trouble." Builds system with thousands of dollars of Intel drives in it...
Used Intel drives (so Intel gets no money out of it)
@@jfwfreo dont they? Fb upgraded their Intel systems, so sure intel made no money from linus directly but neither has anyone else.
@@jfwfreo Facebook is replacing them with Optane, which is Intel, so they made money.
If you have 100 million in sales and 50% are processors... they're on the losing money if they don't buy them. So, just because they spent "Thounsands of dollars" on them doesn't mean they're in a good position
@@JohanDanielAlvarezSanchez you pretty much contradicted yourself "not in a good position"
You are treating it as because 1 sector isnt in a good position then the company in total is doing badly.
Intel has lots of arms, and some like optane are doing awesome, their server support is also doing brilliant.
Infact they recorded $1bn above predicted profits (approx 1.7%), that's not a bad position for the company as a whole, while also remember at the min they have a lot of r+d tied up into Xe which is a whole new arm and has to draw funding from other sectors.
Now sure you are right, AMD are kicking their arse, but that's only in the consumer/prosumer sector, but this happens all the time, 10 years ago you would have been a fool to build a high intel gaming rig, as such AMD went to shit. Swings and roundabouts my friend.
