17:20 Whether or not trials are can be televised in the US depends on state law and the judge in question. Courtrooms are required by the constitution to be open to the public except in very narrow circumstances but there is no requirement to allow cameras. Generally, judges tend not to allow cameras in cases that are high profile or involve SA, and the Michael Jackson case was both.
The us and UK were different trials about different things. There were other differences because of the legal system being totally different. Watched much of the trial with actual lawyer commentary. Basically the sun could say it based on what their information they were given. However for the most part the jury in the us didn't believe all of her story based on the evidence shown and testimony.
also Amber didn`t have to provide evidence. No cross either. So she got away with her lies. I`d pledge to pay the rent but I think my landlord doesn`t accept Amber s logic
@@stephjovi The only issue with this logic is that it can harm actual victims as unless it's bad enough to land you in hospital a lot of evidence in rape and domestic abuse situations can be seen as circumstantial and I struggle to talk about my experiences with my therapist let alone a court room doesn't mean it didn't happen.

In the US, states have no obligation to enforce each other's civil judgments. On the plus side, OJ was later convicted of armed robbery and other felonies when he took back (at gunpoint) his Heisman Trophy and other memorabilia from a dealer. He served 9 years of a 33-year sentence. So, that's something.
If you actually look at a lot of the evidence and listen to her talk she's clearly a liar. I'm not saying Johnny is definitively innocent but I will say between the two I'm more inclined to believe the one who wasn't constantly lying to a judge under oath every few seconds.
I think AH really brought out the worst in him. I think their relationship was likely incredibly toxic. The audio recordings were some of the most damning evidence. Him begging her to just let him walk away so they can cool down and stop fighting, and her demanding he stay and keep fighting... Having grown up with an abusive father and having been in abusive relationships, I felt zero empathy with her. The audio recordings triggered panic attacks for me more than once. The way she speaks to him is just so horrifying.

How close was I?
She definitely committed perjury and domestic violence, but it’s also obvious that the relationship is such a toxic mess either one of them could have gone down for it
Not sure how true, but I read somewhere that OJ had arthritis in his hands and when the trial started his lawyers had him stop taking his meds for it. I do know for a fact that arthritis will make your hands and knuckles swell up and most of the meds that alleviate the arthritis reduces this swelling. So if he did have arthritis and stopped taking his meds, his hands and knuckles would swell up making the gloves not fit.
Funniest thing about that Johnny Vs Amber thing was when her witness said she had trouble getting herself to cry when she’s acting then when she was sobbing for 2 days or smth on the stand she did not tear up once.
The OJ prosecution failed to bring an expert witness to testify that the gloves were outside for some time, which would cause them to shrink. That's why they didn't fit him.
A jury verdict is ALWAYS more stronger than a single judge, who was clearly and provenly biased as his son had a hand writing the article. Justice was served, and amber shat the bed!. #JusticeforJohnny
@@wfb.subtraktor311 There is a system that culls the masses in order to ensure that the jury isn't filled with 'unlearned people.' It's essentially to help limit the bias, as typically the individual are grilled to ensure that they would be fit to sit in during a trial and give an unbiased ruling utilizing all of the information delivered via evidence, testimony, and reports. And, unless the information fails to be presented clearly, cases can easily be ruled by the the 12 culled from the masses. The system is far from perfect, yes, but it is less likely to be manipulated by say, a single person that may or may not have a personal stake in the case.
@@dayokamaria6802 Ahh, so that is why there is only white people in the jury when a black person is tried in the US. Sure would suck if certain parts of the population were to not have access to sufficient high quality education and were consequently "culled" from the jury pool.

Despite what Simon might think, sometimes a jury is more intelligent than a judge, or at least more intelligent than a British judge. Hard to believe anyone could say that Amber's claims were substantially accurate. She really was not good at all at lieing.
But the judge in uk didn't judge Amber's statement. In that case the Sun was writing an article where they called him a wife beater because that was the information publicly available. And the judge recognized that the Depp couldn't prove defamation under uk law. In the us case the article was written by Amber so she needed to prove that the allegation were true. In the uk case that was not relevant the accusation were enough to make the Sun statement not defamatory under uk law (or at least Depp lawers couldn't prove otherwise). In general defamation does depend on the knowledge the accused has on the matter and not only on the truethfulness of the statement itself. If the accused is stating something that is false but beleave to be true, in some cases he/she is required to appologize, remove such content if still being published (online available old news articlea, etc) and not repeat the false information. The uk judge wasn't incompetent. It's just that what the Sun stated was not defamation and protected by free speach (the weaker version present in the uk)
@@eliahabib5111 He said that 10 of the 12 accusations printed in the Sun were substantially true (or correct). Yes he did judge the veracity of her statements because the affirmative defense to defamation is you printed the truth.
He did sue for 50M and won almost all claims. Thing is, apparently, the specific location where he sued Amber has an upper limit to the monetary damages that can be awarded in such cases so he only walks away with 10M
The jury just decided not to award him what he wanted, the limit only applied to the 5 million punitive damages which is limited to 350,000 if I remember right. They wouldn’t have sued for 50 million if it was impossible, the jury just didn’t know about the punitive limit.
He also doesn’t walk away with 10 million, she won 2 million, he won’t 10.35 so really he won 8.35. Why comment if your so wrong? Do you enjoy spreading misinformation?! For shame!

I think jury is better than one judge because jury’s are made up of regular people. The UK judge in this case was massively biased. I think his son worked for a company that worked with or for the sun.
@@mathdemigod8162 they didn't say they weren't, but it's harder to convince 12 people (9 in this case cut down to 7 for the final verdict) that may be biased different ways to agree with one outcome that has no impact on them what so ever, than it is to pay off one judge.
Never said they weren’t or couldn’t be biased but a verdict from a group of regular everyday people is more reliable and representative of what society would think a fitting outcome would be. But like everyone including juries some judges will be fair and use common sense but some will be biased, power hungry and unfair based on their own life experience. Personal religion for example should not be brought into the courts and sentencings.
Jury duty is nuts. We do it in Australia too - I’ve heard of people who sit through descriptions of horrendous crimes and then they are just dismissed - left with the scares from an 18 week trail. Also know that jury members fall asleep in the trial (judges too!)
20:00 they did. This guy thought that “convicting Michael Jackson of child molestation will MAKE my career”. And he figured that a conviction in the “court of public opinion” would be a SUREFIRE win based on how big Michael Jackson was.
Yes, I found it easier to watch the Depp/Heard trial than the Ukraine invasion & fighting coverage -- neither Johnny nor Amber were being shot at or having their homes destroyed! The worst possible outcomes of the civil suit for either privileged celebrity party were nowhere near as serious as what's happening every day to ordinary folks with far fewer resources in the Ukraine. As a survivor of DV & SA myself, it was instructive (though chagrin inducing) to see Amber's narrative of being abused fall apart, & it felt very good to hear Johnny get to speak out about being abused & have the jury vindicate his narrative. Absolutely nothing about Russia's war against the Ukraine is instructive or feels good, & it's far more important, urgent, & historic than any celebrity spat, even one involving serious issues like DV & SA. I'm trying to follow it, but it's MUCH more difficult & painful. Give us some credit, Simon -- it's not that we care more about Depp v Heard, it's that we care TOO MUCH about ordinary people being devastated by war!!! PS: Thanks for saying "Ticketty-boo" -- that's a favourite.
It is so weird/fun to watch a top 10s or today I found out video by Simon and then watch a BB or CC. The other ones are Simons day job, this is Simons drunk podcast.
I’d like to see a Brain Blaze where you talk about historical celeb trials- like Charlie Chaplin, Fatty Arbunkle (because the facts of said case might be better for casual criminalist) and that Australian dude who was in all the early action flicks- Errol Flynn.
Also, Simon, my best friend's mom is from Juarez, Mexico and she's a lovely, kind and loving lady. So if it helps you feel better about watching Norco's, I hope it comforts you to know that lots of folks from that area definitely relocated to get away from the danger of violence. However, when my best friend went to visit family there last year, someone tried to rob her of her iPhone LITERALLY SNATCHING IT FROM HER HANDS. She got pissed off and cussed him out. Attempted thief realized this was not, indeed, a gringo tourist and this scared/caught him off guard enough to hand the phone back to her and run away immediately because she came after him screaming to give her phone back. So, not sure how comforting that might be, but she called me immediately after this to tell me about the incident so at least you have an amusing story of good prevailing over shitty criminals in Juarez, Mexico. 🤣
The UK judge's son is an executive editor at the Sun Newspaper. I'd say that was a pretty big conflict of interest and a point in favor of a jury being a better idea for some cases.
People were not on Johnny's side from Day 1 of this trial. It might just be my experience: I have seen far fewer people say they've been with Depp all along compared to people who were swayed to support him.

As someone who dealt with it, she was too emotionless when talking about it.....I STILL have problems (over 3 years later) talking to my therapist about it. So I don't believe she was by how she was able to describe the abuse so calmly.
Simon, you should do a video of you watching like 3 min of Amber's testimony. your reactions to the clownery of the whole situation would be priceless!
Is it ironic that her story was basically "illegally, my undisclosed X beat me"... and they were like 'that doesnt count because everyone knew who you were talking about Dep, so thats slander ?!
In some districts in the US, judges are elected to their position without the requirement of legal expertise or a law degree. This has led to civil litigations landing defendents in jail without a jury trial or, sometimes, any trial. As for OJ leaving the state to avoid civil damages, the federal authorities wouldn't get involved. It would be up to Florida to be willing to arrest and extradite him to California.
Minor correction: Specifically the Supreme Court doesn't allow cameras. The state courtrooms can still conduct a "federal" trial. In relative terms, any felony IS a federal crime. It'd be impractical to have every single one of those cases appear before the supreme court.
10:24. Oh boy is that a naive take. Judges are ambitious people, mostly lawyers, who were appointed to the post by a politician. Judges are more frequently assigned based on their political stances rather than they’re competence. We’ve got some real train-wrecks banging gavels in the US.
My next-door neighbor was really good friends with OJ. They played on the USC football team together. He was a LAPD officer when the whole thing happened and eventually testified against him, losing many friends in the process.
I didn't watch, or pay attention, to the Depp/Heard trial, because I don't care. However, I knew the outcome from a coworker, who showed me a hilarious meme. It was a picture of Amber, and it said, "now you can finally say Johnny beat you."
I love the show, but the second camera is kind of jarring. Part of what I find so appealing about this show is the conversational nature in which information and comedy is disseminated, and the second camera takes away from that candid feeling and makes it seem much more structured, which will not a bad thing on its own does cut in a bit on what I feel originally made the show so appealing. That said I have nothing but respect for Simon and the incredibly talented writers and editors that work on this production. This is just something that I've found after watching quite a few videos both in the old and new formats, and I don't mean it as a personal critique or a nasty remark on anyone

Isn't British court summoned Heard to UK for possible perjury?
And the judge in the UK ruled that the claims were credible as far as the Sun was concerned, IIRC. Also, i think he sued the Sun for libel.
also Amber didn`t have to provide evidence.
@@md-vq8sp have you listened to what Amber claimed? All that stuff would have to have her end up in hospitals. Real victims either don't collect evidence because that's not even on their minds or they document their injuries. But take pix if Johnny sleeping and tables and mirrors but not of brutal injuries? Ask Danielle Radlick if thanks to Amber no women will be belived anymore. She stabbed her allegedly abuses husband and is free

She definitely committed perjury and domestic violence, but it’s also obvious that the relationship is such a toxic mess either one of them could have gone down for it
To be honest they both sound pretty guilty of abuse.
@@gabriellavedier9650 not even close. Do you always make wrong assumptions about people you don't agree with or am I the lucky one?
The right to a civil jury trial is actually in the US Constitution 🤣🤣🤣 it’s the 7th amendment
Fun fact, the freezing process used on the gloves to preserve evidence could also shrink the gloves
The quacks!!! Adds so much more laughter for me! 🤣🤣🦆
Sam I loved the Dave’s Jones meme that was the perfect one to have in there!
Sure, cause a jury of unlearned people is perfectly suited to carry out the letter of the law.
@@wfb.subtraktor311 Perhaps back in the day when there was far more prejudice, yes. But currently, as it stands, there are representation within the courthouse.
I say this as someone that has been called into jury duty. This was a year and a half after graduating from high school...with a good portion of my education coming from inner cities.
@@dayokamaria6802 To be fair, in the US judges are just a political weapon at this point. Whoever came up with appointing judges with a simple parliamentary majority... So a jury isn't the only thing that has biases.
They’re gonna turn the Johnny Depp trial into a mini-series I just know it. Now we wait in silence…
JD & Marilyn Manson can play the lead in eachothers miniseries.
Oh no.
I hear AH auditioned for it but her acting wasn’t credible.
@@doctorlolchicken7478 That’s a good one. Hilarious. 😆

Dude business blaze and walking around is why I come....
7:50 That made me laugh, Sam. I'm also not really interested in the celbrity part, but the court part does provide precedent and is interesting.
Oh Simon, why in the hell would you wade into the Johnny Depp trail?! Lol, you're insane.
My uncle was a real estate agent in Miami after OJ had moved there. One of his favorite stories is he refused to shake his hand or do business with OJ when he tried to buy a house from his company.
if you had seen the trial, your comments on Heard's popularity based on acting is absolutely hilarious! love it. LOL
Despite what Simon might think, sometimes a jury is more intelligent than a judge, or at least more intelligent than a British judge. Hard to believe anyone could say that Amber's claims were substantially accurate. She really was not good at all at lieing.
Also harder to corrupt. You can corrupt one judge. You have to track down and catch them one by one in a very short amount of time
@@OMartinez91 and the UK judge was highly questionable.
Or maybe her acting was better. Remember she also coined the phrase: You're a man, no one will believe you.
For shame!
for him was never about the money is reputation wort much more them that

I'm amazed that mindless Twitters still defending Amber Butthurt after she straight out of the lies about EVERYTHING.
I think jury is better than one judge because jury’s are made up of regular people. The UK judge in this case was massively biased. I think his son worked for a company that worked with or for the sun.
It's hilarious that you think juries are not made up of biased people.
Sam is on fire as always. An amazing script, presented wonderfully and masterfully memed
Amber was in the movie Aquaman but you are right not on his level. They kept her part in the sequal small.

Listen, listen Fantastic Beasts has bigger problems than Depp...*cough*EzraMiller*cough*
Just what I needed. Cheers Simon!
Simon is using the hell out of the new multiple cameras.
Ah yes. Nothing like a good "Blain Braze." 🤣
Simon was just doing his best impression of a celebrity at the end there. Ya know, hot air has to get out somehow
The UK judge's son is an executive editor at the Sun Newspaper. I'd say that was a pretty big conflict of interest and a point in favor of a jury being a better idea for some cases.
Simon goes off on more tangents than a geometry lecturer 🤣🤣🤣
Absolutely love the Eric Andre show reference at the beginning.
Depp won't be doing anymore pirates movie, not even for 300million dollars and a million alpacas.🤣
People were not on Johnny's side from Day 1 of this trial. It might just be my experience: I have seen far fewer people say they've been with Depp all along compared to people who were swayed to support him.
i need an entire video of Simon's play by play of the Depp/Heard Trial. I didn't care enough to pay attention to it, but i would watch the shit out of that
It says something about the new BB that Simon can mention Phil Collins without breaking into a version of In the Air Tonight... also no My Cousin Vinny memes...... come on Simon!
Seriously, Amber Heard didn't act like a Domestic Abuse Victim. As someone who dealt with it, she was too emotionless when talking about it.....I STILL have problems (over 3 years later) talking to my therapist about it. So I don't believe she was by how she was able to describe the abuse so calmly.
I think they should use amber heard as a psychological case study on sociopathy…
Love the Entourage reference 👌
Never commented before Whistler . I was a jury Foreman , we got an 11-1 and the one whispered “guilty “ into my ear … nearly chocked

7:40 haha so honest, but I dont care either, but I love how you bring it haha
Simon still reeling from the Pedro Lopez episode of The Casual Criminalist
They weren't the same. Amber wasn't the defendant in the UK trial.
Simon: Dammit Danny, write shorter scripts!
Also Simon: 3 minute Surfshark add...
"Vincent Chase isn't going to be doing it."
Danny, you magnificent bastard!!!
Federal trials are not allowed to be recorded, that's why they have people draw courtroom sketches. State cases can be recorded and publicized
Minor correction: Specifically the Supreme Court doesn't allow cameras. The state courtrooms can still conduct a "federal" trial. In relative terms, any felony IS a federal crime. It'd be impractical to have every single one of those cases appear before the supreme court.
Video editor did a great job on this one 👍
Simon has summed up my feelings on the whole Johnny Depp and Amber Heard thing perfectly.
You can never have too many pirate movies in your life!
Blaze has always been funny, but this one was at an inferno level 😆
10:24. Oh boy is that a naive take. Judges are ambitious people, mostly lawyers, who were appointed to the post by a politician. Judges are more frequently assigned based on their political stances rather than they’re competence. We’ve got some real train-wrecks banging gavels in the US.
Has Simon started a duck farm at the studio?
Simon an idea for future video & title "shout out to Drugs for winning the war on the drugs"
My next-door neighbor was really good friends with OJ. They played on the USC football team together. He was a LAPD officer when the whole thing happened and eventually testified against him, losing many friends in the process.
yes simon let the ALWAYS competent judges rule on all cases that could never ever go wrong.
Sam you absolute quacking genius...
I didn't watch, or pay attention, to the Depp/Heard trial, because I don't care. However, I knew the outcome from a coworker, who showed me a hilarious meme. It was a picture of Amber, and it said, "now you can finally say Johnny beat you."
Love that ❤️
I definitely need a casual criminalist on OJ Simpson now
Could someone explain the legal line between blackmailing someone and pushing for an out of court settlement... or even an in court settlement?
Simon: Leave it to the judges.
US media (this week): Kill the judges.
