Meet The McGinnis Family (Mitch 'N Friends) Annual Campaign 2024

The McGinnis family have been members at the Edwardsville YMCA for over 20 years. They have connected with other members and the community additionally through a special needs tennis program called Mitch 'N Friends. Learn more about the family and the program in the video and below.

One of the newer mission programs offered at the Edwardsville YMCA has actually been available to the community for over a decade. The Mitch ‘N Friends Adapted Tennis Program was started at the Edwardsville Futures Men’s Pro Circuit Tournament as a free event that allows children and young adults with special needs an opportunity to learn and play tennis. The YMCA took over the event two years ago and adapted it to be offered to the community for free every month on the second Thursday at 6:00pm at the Meyer Center.
The inspiration for Mitch ‘N Friends, expanded from Mitchell McGinnis taking lessons with coach Dave Lipe and made into a yearly event for special needs individuals. His parents, Kevin & Sharla, established a love of tennis in the family. Mitch helped manage the boys and girls tennis programs at EHS for six years, when his twin sister Morgan and younger sister Annie both played for the team. The McGinnis’ are loyal members of the Edwardsville YMCA since moving here from Springfield over 20 years ago; they have built up strong bonds in the community and at the Y. Over the years, the family have been involved in the Niebur Preschool program, Adapted Swimming, enjoy playing basketball, working out and walking the track.
Mitch’s sisters even worked at the Y in Tennis (Morgan) and at Summer Camp (Annie); passing on their passion for youth programming.
Continuing to build upon the great program that they started has been such a gift to all involved at the YMCA. It is wonderful to see new players enjoy the game of tennis and volunteers from the EHS Tennis Team and Y staff help to facilitate each month. We encourage families to participate and try their hand at something new! Mitch ‘N Friends Adapted Tennis is just one of the special offerings that we can’t wait to continue to provide in 2024!
