    Another fun floyd trick... if you break a string at the saddle you can always take a wrap or two off the tuning post and reinsert the string. Will usually get you to the end of the set when you can address any issues.

      I would break a string onstage and be back in tune in under 2 min flat! Floyds are the shit!

      Yep! Wrapping extra string around the machine heads not only helps keep the high strings from slipping, but also comes in handy in that situation.

      I've been doing the Eddie technique of stringing the ball end through the tuning peg for 20 years. That way you get the max extra string length to work with if you need to unwind and relock.

  • @WiserInTime
    @WiserInTime 5 ปีที่แล้ว +41

    I never understood the "it's hard to change strings on a Floyd Rose" line. It's actually super easy and the time you spend cutting off a ball end and loosening and then tightening the locking nut is worth it because no matter how good your non-double locking trem system is at staying in tune the Floyd Rose stays in tune better.

      it’s the tuning after the string change that’s harder than a typical bridge, the actual string clamping is easy

      You dont need to cut ball ends if you feed the string the other way around from the top.yet i never hear annyone complain they have to cut strings by the tuner at the headstock.i never understood those complaints.and i didnt even cut them at the headstock i just bended them and broke them off

    • @milesfifer171

      I never had a problem changing strings on a floyd. On a FULL floating trem just change one string at a time and tune it before going to the next string.😉

      I have a 6 and 7 string with Floyds and I'd much rather do a string change on them than my BC Rich with the wraparound tailpiece. That thing is an aggravating pain in the ass.

    I got my first Floyd Rose in early '84. I prefer stringing them "backwards"; ball end at the tuners, then clip off excess at the bridge. It makes it easier to fix a broken string during a gig.

    You don’t need to cut the ball ends off. Feed strings from the tuning machine, pull string away from headstock past the bridge, then cut the string immediately after the saddle lock screw behind the bridge. Lock end into bridge, tune, stretch strings, then tune and lock nut. It will give you about three wraps around the tuning machine post. Just guide it downward from hole in post as you wind it up.

    • @warmoth
      @warmoth  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I know lots of people do that. I don't like to because the area where the string is double-wrapped around the ball end doesn't wrap neatly around the post. It's a visual thing for me. :)

    • @butteredbiskit3497
      @butteredbiskit3497 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used to do that and wind up all the string on the tuner because the strings always broke @ the bridge do I'd just unwind the tuner enough to lock the sting back into the bridge. Not ideal but it'll get you through a set.

  • @MrCshmn
    @MrCshmn 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    OMG! The nut string spacing! I have a LTD Kirk Hammett sig guitar and it drives me crazy with the amount of room at the sides of the neck. All I have to do is change the nut? This is fantastic news. It's the only thing that bugs me about the guitar.

  • @switchmuso
    @switchmuso 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Useful tip: If you put lots of string winding on the tuners you can unlock a broken string and pull it through onstage to insert the new string end in the bridge, tune her up and away you go in a minute with a pre-stretched string..

    I agree with you on ease of string changes. I've had a Floyd on at least one of my guitars now sense about 1984 or so. The very first ones did not have fine adjustments for tuning. You really got schooled on Floyd back then, or at least I did. I got that swapped out when I moved back to the states from Germany. Wish I held on to the original though. Heard those might be worth a buck or two...I guess I knew all the things you spoke of in the video though, they also offer shims for the nut, or various nuts rather. If the nut needs adjustments on a set up. Lots of videos with how to .....your Floyd Rose, out there too...
    Thank you for exercising my mind in a different direction than it has been lately. Much needed distraction from the madness of the world we inhabit these days...love and light to all...

    My main issue is just that the OFR is really uncomfortable to use. Sharp edges everywhere on the tremolo and the locking nut and the tine tuners are way too close to the saddles. That's why I always replace them with the Gotoh Floyd Rose that fixes all these problems or just go with a non-locking tremolo like the Hipshot Contour.

  • @agt2434
    @agt2434 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks Aaron! There is also a Floyd Rose R1 nut with a 1 9/16" nut width and narrower string spacing than the R2. This is what I use on my 1 5/8" nut width Warmoth necks (after I narrow them further by sanding away 1/32" from each side). I wish Warmoth offered a nut with narrower than 1 5/8"!

    • @warmoth
      @warmoth  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. They also make something like an "R10" I think, which has a 15" radius. Warmoth just stocks the 4 widths that sell the best.

  • @chrisbaker121924
    @chrisbaker121924 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I might be totally bat crazy but I put the ball end on the top sticking out on the headstock and wind on just after the wound up bit of string finishes…. because well… pretty colours on your headstock if you use some brands. Plus it means no jamming a sharp string end down your finger nail. Cause the ball end protects it.
    I copy the length of the old string (unless there were two many or two few turns around the peg, then I adjust the length accordingly) and do them one string at a time to save tuning being a pain and the trem pinging out.
    Also if the whole guitar is flat i tune each string sharp as I go up because the floating trem will mean that it will pull that string back flat by the time you get to your last strings.
    Then I agree it’s at least as easy as any other guitar.

    No need to cut the ball end off, ball end goes through the tuning peg and acts as an anchor, opposite end of string then gets locked down in the actual trem itself however you do need to trim it slightly as it would be too long otherwise. This method is reportedly done by Steve Vais guitar tech.

    Aaron, thanks for making this video. Just bought a Floyd Pro 1000 because I don't want the tuners sticking up in the air and also hopefully avoid neck shims. So I had to look this up again to double check on the arm situation, but found that I need the R4 instead of the R3. Thanks again.

    I string all my floyds backwards, leading through the tuning peg till the ball stops in it, then cut the string at the end of the bridge, then put them in the saddles and peg wind the thing up. Enough wraps on the tuners and no pokeys. Quicker too cause I don't have to 'knot' the string at the tuner.

    Floyd locking trems aren't hard to do string changes on. Once you've done it a couple of times you're golden.
    Only takes me about ten minutes to change em out. What I suggest is clipping all of the ball ends first, then block the tremolo so when you take the old strings off the spring tension doesn't pull the tremolo inside of the body. Then take all of your cut strings and tighten them into the saddles, then string them through your tuning head posts, and tune it up just under standard e, then take out whatever you have blocking the tremolo, I usually use a Bic lighter with a paper towel wrapped around it, works great. Once you take that out, when you get it tuned the tremolo should be sitting fairly even. If it is pulling up, you need to tighten the string tension screws in the back underneath, if it is pulling down, you need to loosen. And then continue doing it until you get it right and it's floating evenly.
    I know the way I'm explaining it must sound like a long and tedious process but truly it is not once you've learned to do it. I've been doing it for many years. Most of my guitars have Floyd Rose locking tremeloes. Good luck kids!

    Yeah the string changes can be fast once you get good and familiar, But the full true setup on a floyd is pretty involved, and time consuming, specially if you have to radius out the floyd saddles with shims, and intonate the saddles. If youre new to floyd hardware you probably wouldnt have noticed theres saddles with different heights set with labels on them. Installing the correct height for said string is crucial. Setting spring tension and action along with neck relief, all can take time to find the perfect balance as well, but its all very rewarding in the end id argue

    FR original: I was on a gig and in the middle of a song the B string snapped. I had a new string on the guitar and tuned in time to play out the ending of the song. Took all of about 1 minute and that did include cutting off the ball end. Faster and easier than a standard Strat trem.

    Hey bosses we want to see more videos. Aaron liked how you said Floyd Rose was way old like from the 80's. To everyone under 30 the 1980's isn't that old!!! But as always we do enjoy the videos so keep producing them.

    Call me weird, stupid, whatever, but I actually string my Floyd with the ball ends through the tuning machines. Makes a world of difference in terms of easy restringing, and haven't had any problems with it.
