I suspect what is happening in Ukraine is a bit more important than a few cruises being cancelled.

War is rarely what is reported in the newspapers. Here we have the West all blaming Putin and asserting that he is the aggressor. War is always created by politicians - not the people. There are intermarriages in Ukraine. In this case, the Minsk Agreement which was supposed to have been brokered by France and Germany was started in 2014. In Ukraine, politicians refused to allow the independence of two Russian states. During the Soviet Union era, Russians migrated to various regions of the Ukraine. With the fall of the Soviet Union, the Minsk II agreement was to allow local elections in the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics on their future status in Ukraine. Make no mistake about it, if Western Canada decides to leave and become independent, Trudeau would also send in military forces. The same would be true in a separatist movement that takes hold in the United States, Germany, France, Britain, or Italy. This is a matter of human rights that people ignore. Now you know the rest of the story. This war was preventable, it’s the politicians that did not keep their promises for a democratic vote for 2 of the Ukrainian provinces to leave. It’s a sad war and many innocents will now die. Ukraine has a former comedian for its President and we have an basket case for our President. My advice - turn the news off, it’s all falsehoods and half truths. Everything I stated here is verifiable. Let me repeat-- Back in December 2021, the refusal to negotiate on the Minsk Agreement to allow election by Ukraine, probably at the direction of the West, has merely placed the entire nation of Ukraine at risk. There has been plenty of time - 8 years..

The partial and threat of full isolation of Russia's financial system would make it hard for cruise ships to pay port fees, and make it hard for tourists to spend money in St Petersburg. So this isn't just about supporting "the cause", there are also practical reasons to skip those stops.

In the last 4 months, my Dad has known more people getting COVID than ever. So I'm still wearing a mask even though I'm vaccinated. So it's just still so weird. You go some places where there's NO masks, and then other places they're trying to upgrade masks.

RCI hasn't officially canceled the city, so I am in limbo as to whether the rest of the trip and the substitute ports are worth it. It's compounded by a dearth of substitute trips I want to take that fit in my schedule, at least on RCI. I may have to look at when my FCC expires. If in 2022, I'm in limbo. If in 2023, I may go on a different line to British Isles or something.

If we're serious about this versus just spewing empty words, our "leaders" will stop importing Russian oil. That will cause us to pay much higher gas prices, but will be a substantive blow to the Russian powers-that-be. Why penalize poor Russian people who make their living from tourism, etc.?

I was going to be on the Wonder, but couldn't get the extra time off. And second, its already happened, a Turkish Cargo ship that was leaving Ukraine was hit by a bomb. It wasn't heavily damaged and no one was injured, but yeah.

We need more ships cruising in the French Polynesia area. I don’t want to sail from Hawaii or Australia. I want to begin and end in Tahiti.

We have a cruise with Norwegian in July. They have cancelled the stop in St Petersburg. We were in St Petersburg in September. The people were so excited to see us after the Covid lock down. They treated us like family. Can’t understand why any of this is happening. Just why.

Hello Don, we really enjoy watching your channel. We are from the Montreal area. We are booked with NCL for a Baltic cruise on June 20th and NCL yesterday removed our 2 day stop in St Petersburg. Now it is just 2 days at sea. We don’t know if they will replace this 2 day port stop with an another destination or will remain sea days. Thank you for keeping us updated on cruising.

St. Petersburg, Russia was so beautiful. You are right, one day does not to it justice. I hate to give it glowing remarks because of what it’s tyrant is doing to Ukraine and it’s people.

Hello Don : Please Help !!!!! Just booked a cruise on Discovery Princess for Alaska. I know you were on Sister ship Majestic Princess on Emerald Deck 8th Fl. Mini Suite. QUESTION : I'm also in Mini Suite on Emerald right next to the one you were in. Did that cabin have a roof & was there any noise from theater down below ???? Thanks a million in advance. John

I'm scheduled to cruise the Baltic on the Enchanted Princess this year in July. I sure hope the cruise isn't affected too much!

My 2020 Baltic cruise was rebooked for 2021. Obviously both were canceled. We just asked for a refund since the world is crazy and we are getting old and the trip we planned isn't going to happen. Maybe just the cruise someday, but not the extra travel we had planned. Age unfortunately is not on our side.

Disappointing because cruise lines will also say this is within the contract so can't cancel, even though St. Petersburg would be the reason to take the trip for me.

    • @halpen

@@starstuff5958 I think you're being overly harsh in your judgement here. The unprovoked invasion of Ukraine is a horrific event, and I think everybody here gets that. No doubt we have all been in multiple conversations about it both online and off, and the humanitarian problems dominate those discussions - at least among the people that I know.
But this channel is focused on cruising, so of course that is the particular aspect of this situation that is getting discussed on this forum. It absolutely does NOT mean that this community thinks it's the most important thing, but it's something that a) directly impacts some of the people bere and b) isn't likely being discussed outside the cruise channels. So it's perfectly appropriate to discuss those issues here, and not at all an indication of skewed priorities - just a narrower focus for conversation, due to the forum.
