Yeah , this is one of the very best reviews of this amp .... even 10 years later ! I got me one a few months ago . Great amp all around . I've had them all . For me this one does Fender , Mesa , Marshall , Vox , Hiwatt , etc. .. All of them in this amp ! Built like a tank super reliable .

Great to hear that you picked up this amp and especially that you enjoy it. Peavey equipment has been in my collection for over 20 years, and I consider it to be truly excellent gear. That foot switch can be purchased at any licensed Peavey dealer (such as through Musicians Friend online). Thanks for watching! - Andrew

    @CanadianCharlie64 ...
I've never tried Cellestion Vintage 30 speakers (?) The ValveKing speakers (being stock) are very nice, but I suppose if you take any decent amp (or guitar for that matter) and start down the path of doing Hot-Rodding to them, they certainly do tend to improve. However, the hot-rodding is also specific to the owner doing the modifications. Anyway, the ValveKing (as she's shipped) in my opinion is a bargain in the tube-amp world.
    Thanks for watching,
    Andrew Wasson

This was the video that sold me on the Valveking when I was looking for a tube amp, it does everything I want and on stage it is LOUD and it holds up nicely with a Drummer. Even with the texture knob at 40 watts.
Though for the type of Metal I play an Overdrive Pedal is essential for the extra tightness, but for everything else... It kills it!
Thanks for making my decision remarkably easier! Cheers!

I remember here in NYC in the late seventies/early eighties, Peavey gained a great reputation really fast. Every time I turned around it seemed someone was playing through one, and no one I remember had a bad word to say about them. They are simply a great American amp company.

  • @creativeguitarstudio

The 212 would, (of course), kick serious butt on-stage or at your rehearsals. But, on the other-hand, the 112 would likely work out pretty nice as well, (without all of the added weight of another speaker). Sure they'll sound different, but I'm sure you can almost guess at which one would have more headroom... - Andrew

  • @Wardell43

Peavey has 4 "Used" Tube Amps in the $200-$300 range that with modifications are excellent amplifiers.
    VK-112
    VK-212
    VK-100 watt (Head)
    Windsor-100 watt(Head)
and 2 in the $300 to $400 range
    Classic 50(212)
    Classic -50(410)
They are cheap, new, out the door, but new owners get disgruntled and blinded by the lights of the "Greener Grass' when instead of ditching these heroes they should be upgrading the speakers and retubing.
These are incredible 2 channel Amps with gorgeous reverb. Not the Best. Not Hand Wired. But a damn good Amp and Made In The USA.
Simply run you effects thru the clean channel and run the gain channel dry.

Finally someone who knows how to make a a good review! :)
What makes this great is that it's brief and it has tons of usefull info on the amp and not just one guy jamming and messing around with the EQ with a noisy mic :P
An added plus is playing different styles and not just sticking to palm muted overdrive or shredding etc. We're here for an amp review, not to see your guitar skills :D.
Anyway...great review and I will definately check this amp out after watching it...Cheers :)

I got one of these and was immediately blown away. I do everything from blue grass to metal to Spanish classical. After getting this amp I sold my fender twin reverb. The clean sound with the reverb is so close to the twin I couldn't justify keeping it. This is easily the best amp I've ever owned for what I do.

I've had one a first gen version of thr 212 for about 18 years (since about 07) and it still rips like the day i bought it. Its all business--no frills and no bullshit. They didnt waste any space putting junk effects into it.
Great versatility of sound and makes all my guitars sound great, the Strat, Jackson, Gibson LP, and Taylor. The two input jacks make it great for lessons or playing a backing track through an aux 1/8 to 1/4 cable or these new Bluetooth 1/4 inputs.
My only issue is when i bought it new i had to haggle my way down to $550 and i believe it was stickered at $700 at the time, and was a new line of high quality amp but seeing them in the couple hundred dollar range in mint condition. Might have to pick up a backup since they're discontinued and Peavey is more concerned with the Vypyrs. Especially for the same price as a 20 watt 8" Orange I was eyeing for portability. It's all personal preference though

Sorry to bother, but I needed a quick answer because next week I will buy an amplifier . My favorite is the Peavey VK 212, it is what I was looking forward to buy for my gigs and practice, but I also live in a very small apartment, so... I can't play with that amp in my home. What I wanted to know (you mentioned something about it in your video) is if you can connect a smaller head to the Valveking speakers (something like a 1 or 5w head) and just use the amplification from the smaller head.

@ecgedcel : it's a fixed bias amp you can go to eurotubes website and buy a matched set within spec for the amp and be good to go...mine has their preamp tubes and they sound great! I have factory rubytubes 6L6's for now but have heard upgrading the tibes and speaker can make a big improvement...thing is mine sounds so good with just the preamp upgraded I keep forgetting to order them! @simon19942008 A tube amp uses tubes instead of a digital preamp. Tubes are a older technology but sound really nice and warm when turned up loud. At quiet volumes digital probably has better distortion, but when cranked tubes definitely sound the best. Brands like Line6 are mostly digital, while Marshall is mostly tube.
A combo amp has the amp and speakers in one package, while a stack has the amp and speakers separately, so you would need an external cabinet .

  • @ChaserHUN
    @ChaserHUN 13 ปีที่แล้ว

The big weakness of this amp is the speakers. I've changed them to Celestion V30s, made a huge difference! And for metal add a tube screamer or a maxon od and it's going to be really heavy and tight.

Great review and you echo my thoughts on this amp exactly. I used this amp as my primary amp on stage. I have had a few over the years including Fender Twins, silverface and supersonic, Line 6, Marshall JCM etc, but it was always this amp that I preferred. It has great tone and a rich bottom end. It can be easily dialled in and it works so well with pedals. I found it tough and durable and was considerably lighter than the Fender Supersonic Twin ( mind you I think everything is lighter than this amp)

Dear Andrew, thank you so much to introducing this wonderful amp, this is exactly what I´ve been looking for so many years. I´m so sick and tired those monster amps with super high gain with death metal music with dropped tuning, those will never tell us how they behave with clean channel and blues and rock overdrive which is the most important to me. It has to be very correct not just something like that. Valveking gives us all that we really need with very good and musical clean sound which is always missing if you´re looking for good rock overdrive with harmonies included. You missed one thing, when you play silent how this answers, does it still get loud or follow your finger touch?

@DanjoForrest For starters throw out the "settings" thing, and take a look at his studio room, hardwood floors, alot of bare walls, what looks to be an AGK possibly a perception series mic and you will get a totally different sound. In andrews case he could most likely turn down half his settings way back, to what you might need to have to get his sound in a typical basement. They might get you close, but most likely will not unless you have very simillar conditions. CHeers, IC

The bedroom level is easily attainable. There are enough controls to dial in a good sound at any volume. Seriously, best amp you can get for the money and you'll be super happy with it. I thought 100 wattts was way more than I needed 'cuz I'm a low-watt amp guy so I sold mine. Dumbest move I ever made. I'm looking for another. I swear, the only advantage of a small amp is its easier to carry. The VK is not as portable. Go try one at low levels . Killer amp !!

Blackstar HT series. Orange Tiny Terror. Jet City. I gotta say, the Valveking is a pretty decent amp, but 100 watts is a bit much to really crank for power tube overdrive. If you want great distortion tones, go for something lower wattage and easier to crank because tube amps sound better the louder they are turned up. It's hard to get a 100 watt amp into magicaltoneland. Just speaking from experience!

This amp is a monster and I own it . If you are inclined to mod them, (which I don't find necessary ) ask any mod guy--Fargen, Voodoo, etc and they will tell you that Peavey has all the right stuff (signal path etc) to make a great amp . I already think it's pretty great but I suppose if you put in higher quality caps, resistors and all that stuff you'd hear some improvement .Also, Peavey's service dept is second to none ! I am very impressed w the VK212.

I will admit I have the 112 and with all stock, it does sound like crap, but when you swap the tubes out and change the speaker, it sounds like a completely different amp. The gain is pretty damn good for hard rock and some forms of metal at that point.

I have an Engl screamer pro blues to compare and i've had a lot of great amps like fender twin, the 112 is a really great amp for clean sound..., i must admit that i don't use the overdrive chanel but there's a mod you can look at on youtube ("peavey valveking 112 modification 1-2" and 2-2), you could like the overdrive tone after the mod... ;-)

Sadly, they come stock with Rubys. Rubys are fucking horrible. I have the 212 and will soon swap out the shitty Rubys for a JJ/Tung Sol combo. A pair of Celestions would be sick as well. I can make it sound decent with the Rubys and VK speakers with my pedals, but it'll be a whole 'nother amp once I swap those out.

@funtochill431 The Texture control changes the amp from Class A to Class A/B operation, actually. and I prefer the drive of a tube power amp with minimal preamp drive to get a more natural, organic tone. I would never say any distortion pedal could beat the overdrive of an amp considering Soldano, Splawn, or even my beloved Orange Rocker 30 stack. The MT2 would be good for a hyperdistorted scooped tone, but not really a very dynamic, warm, and organic tone true to your guitar.

  • @darkragnarok21
    @darkragnarok21 14 ปีที่แล้ว

@CanadianCharlie64 I think the new VK's these days are better than the old ones. I have one from about a year and a half ago and comparing it to the new one, the pots are smoother, the speakers are a bit better, and the gain control is more responsive. I think they tweaked them. But the difference may just be in my head.....

Nice video mate, I got a vk112... changed valves and speaker (the original speaker seems to lack definition in band settings).
I was wondering, why didn't you put a patch cable in the fxloop? it activates the fxloop buffer and gives you a 'beefier' sound. :)
Anyway i wanted to ask if you feel like the drive channels make loads of unexpected noise?
my lead sounds are much more cleaner from pedals like BB preamp than from amp channels that seem to bring lots of noise. Tks for your attention

@CanadianCharlie64 The Valveking speaker may be crap, but Andrew has the uncanny ability to make any amp sound good :) I run the Valveking through a Marshall cab with G12T-75's and it sounds great.

Interesting demo. But I was curious----- on the clean channel, did you engage the bright switch, or leave it off?

Hmm, i can get this amp and the peavey 6505 plus 112 combo for the same price, it seems that this amp just has a lot more features in general, except for pre and post buttons. What would you recommend?

I've seen 3 used ones of this amp in different stores over the past couple of years, and they ALWAYS have the same weird problem with the overdrive channel cutting in-and-out and sounding like something isn't right, while the clean channel is fine! lol

Hey Andrew, what microphone are you using, and is it directly connected to a computer or to a mixer or what?

@jonboynumba1 I own the 100w head and think this amp rocks. I insist, that if the sound isn't exactly the way you like, try putting a 10-ban EQ running through the loop. Much cheaper than switching out the tubes.

How's the bass respond on this thing? I need that to be good for palmmutes.

I have this amp and I've found that the lead channel's EQ is absolutely horrible, and i got a sonic maximizer and a MXR 31 band EQ. With these i can get every style like you have but extremal more versatile. Also I find that the stock speakers are really dull, not enough crisp for me. But overall this amp is amazing and I'm very satisfied with it.

could you please tell me what your dials are set on the lead channel when your playing the more bluesy sound, I've been having a really hard time finding a good sound, if you could please respond to this question I would greatly appreciate it.
