Those Seattle Autumn photos were very pleasant. Glass floor at the top of a tall tower... less pleasant. But that's me. I could say I got the 7A body cap lens for my OM-5 for this purpose; but the problem with an EDC is that I need to be somewhere to justify the use of an EDC, which hasn't happened much with a month of cover shifts in cold & flu season. So my EDC has been my phone, but even that implies I've been snapping away with it. 🥴
I'm loving the OM-D E-M5 with the 17mm f/1.8. I did add the Fotodiox metal grip, not for the grip on the front so much as it added just a touch more height so my pinky has a place to go. That 17mm is perfect for street, and love the MF clutch so I can quickly go MF with a preset distance for that "Ricoh GR snap focus" effect. Brilliant little street camera and I might like it more than my M240 at the moment.
My everyday ILC camera is usually my Pentax Q7, but a lot of the time, lately, I've been carrying an old Pentax point and shoot (the VS 20) in daylight because I love the pocketability and the way the CCD sensor images look really appeals to me at this moment in my life.
I wish Panasonic (or OM) would release a modern small body again. At the moment it's all giant, heavy, expensive bodies at prices where most people may as well just get a full frame mirrorless camera unless they are a professional with a particular niche where smaller lenses are needed. Stuff like the GM / GF series and the old Olympus Pen E-P series are what brought a lot of us to m4/3.
I don't get this idea that somehow one should give up the size and weight advantages of MFT just because an OM-1 or G9II body with industry leading tech costs what a mid-range FF body without much if any of that tech costs. I have no interest in ever lugging around lenses that weigh far more, are far larger, and have half the reach. Heaving said that, I would love to see both a high end range-finder MFT body like a PEN F II or a GX-something with an EVF. Also, there should be a mid-range body also with EVF.
I want a 3.5mm audio jack for my small Panasonic body! Since there are so many video features having the jack would be great and wouldn’t threaten the G or GH body sales. Looking forward to receiving phase detection. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
@gregfeeler6910 because the newer bodies aren't that much smaller anymore, the benefit comes primarily from the lenses but some fairly small very capable lenses are available for aps-c. I just switched to MFT but I bought older cameras because of the size. If I wasn't such a sucker for the lens selection that I realistically will never use, I could have stuck with an aps-c camera with one or two lenses. MFT has it's place but they're making it harder on themselves by not providing the tiny bodies to boast about.
There can never be enough GX8 videos! It’s still my favourite despite all its limitations, there’s just something about it that makes you want to grab it and use it. I’m most often pairing mine with the SLR Magic 25mm T0.95 cine lens, it matches the body really well and gives such a nice dreamy look to the photos. Btw. as a tall person I many times use the tilting viewfinder in order to be able to shoot from a more normal perspective :D If I held the camera straight to my eye I’d aim over everything unless I either point the camera slightly downwards or crouch, neither of which is usually ideal. So for me the tilting viewfinder is actually often quite useful :D
Thanks for another great video, Emily. I worked my backwards to the GX8 after being a GX9 user for the past 5 years since that camera's release in 2018. Following problems with my GX9 after being caught in a heavy shower, I decided I needed a weatherproof alternative and bought a used GX8 from MPB earlier this year, mainly as a back-up. But once I started using it, I realised what I had been missing with its superior ergonomics (I love that grip - and the excellent EVF). The result is role reversal with the GX9, which I still love using but is now serving more as a 2nd camera body, with the GX8 taking over as the constant companion, especially for travel. It is also feels far better balanced than the GX9 with larger lenses, including my Lumix Leica 12-60 or 14-140mm II. As I get older I find that SLR style cameras are too bulky and inconvenient for me to carry around and I sold my old G9 a while ago. I have neither the will nor the budget to consider the G9ii (I don't need a hybrid as I don't shoot video). Like others here - I really wish Panasonic (and/or OM Systems) would turn their attention towards producing a GX10 (or PEN F II) equivalent, taking advantage of technical advances but keeping the form factor. In the meantime, please keep posting about the GX8 - it will be fascinating to see what results you get.
Like @bobstephenson956 I backed into the GX8. I started with the GX85 which I liked very much. Early last year upgraded to the GX9 and kit P12-60mm lens. Last month purchased the GX8 @ a local camera store for $400. So far I don’t know if I prefer the GX9 vs the GX8. Last weekend I purchased the 20mm pancake lens. No more cameras or lenses for a while. Amen to a GX10. Upgrade the GX8 with phase detection. A full size audio jack (3.5mm) would be nice too. Better IBIS and IBIS that works when shooting 4K video would be nice too. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
Another Masterpiece from the Master. And yes, I am glad you mentioned the issue about the EVF. In the UK -- no pun intended - "bright sunlight" is less of an issue. In Southern regions, and in particular in open areas without shade - it is often almost impossible to work without it.
I’ve had my GX7 since new, 10 or 11 years now. I use the articulating EVF constantly as a waist level finder. I rarely shoot anything at eye level, so the articulating EVF is great.
I love my GX8. I have a G9 which is awesome but I find myself gravitating to the GX8 more and more. When I am out and about the G9 is on my tripod and the GX8 is always ready in my Peak Design clip. Keep up the good work and hope that you enjoyed your trip overseas. JP
Great captures! I need to dust off my good ol’ GX8. It’s my least used camera body since I’m always capturing photo/video work with 2 G9’s and GX85 for extra coverage. I will try the GX8 with the 14mm for a small set up 🙌
I love my gx8, I took it on my trip to London last year and it's my favorite travel camera. If you ever come back to the US and come to Texas, here in San Antonio we have a famous tower as well, the Tower of Americas. I think you would love the Riverwalk for street photography out here. The photography community here would love to welcome you. Love your positive videos.
Hallo Emily, du bist verrückt im positiven Sinne. 🤟Ich mag deine Art sehr. Deine Fotos und Motive sind toll und kreativ und inspirierend. 🫶Vielen Dank für ein weiteres nettes Video.
While it’s no longer my primary (G9ii now), the GX8 is by far my favorite m43 body and I probably will always keep at least 1 of them. Sadly Pany threw a lot of customers off with the western naming scheme (the GX9 is called the GX7 mk3 in asia) so I’m not sure if we’ll see another weather sealed range finder…. But I really hope they upgrade it to a mk2!
I'm not sure but I think this was the first Panasonic Lumix M43 camera too still have 12-bit raw from electronic shutter. Some of the older Panasonic Lumix cameras the electronic shutter is 10-bit raw.
As much as the “G9ii is blooming epic’…loved that! Getting tired of waiting for a new small Panasonic so have been considering an OM5, but don’t know how well it would work with Panasonic lenses…not so much the wide end but not having the camera stabilization work with Panasonic lens stabilization is a concern for telephoto. Great photos Emily!
I have an Olympus E-M5 Mk III which has the same stabilization system as the OM-5 and I also have the Pana Leica 100-400mm f4-6.3 lens and find that using the lens-only IS works very well for me.
I have the GX9 and love it. Smaller & lighter than the GX8. B/C it is a newer body the video & IBIS is better. Same body shape. Of course your Panasonic lenses will work fine on the GX9. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
@@jimblues21 A major benefit of the M43 system is both Olympus and Panasonic use the same lens mount. The manufacturers haven’t designed their lenses so the image stabilization works across platforms. Too bad the lenses don’t play better with the other company’s bodies. Such is life. Hi! I've been enjoying your videos and recently learned about mpb from one of your videos. Normally I check ebay and keh for used gear. Anyways two weeks ago I spent my yearly budget on a new Nikon Zf and wanted a zoom and wide lens without spending another crazy amount of money. So I went to mpb and found like new nikkor 24-85, and 18-35 lenses for very reasonable prices! Those will do me fine for a while, I already had a 50mm 1.8. Thanks for the cool videos.
I recently purchase the G9II but when I am going out to take pics of grandkids, street stuff, I take my old Oly OMD-EM 1. With the 20mm f/1.7 lens it is a small package that can fit in a jacket pocket or be easily carried in one hand.
Nice presentation. LA City boy, here. Graduated from college at UCLA, lived in Santa Monica for years. My cameras of choice these days are: LUMIX GX9 with 3 lenses, Fuji X70 and, collecting dust - Fuji XPro2. I wont sell it, though. I have opted for smaller cameras over the years with no regrets. Your photos brought back many nice memories. Particularly the shots from Venice beach which is one of the truly most unusual places on the planet. The level of tolerance and acceptance is quite unusual. Regards….Wayne
Thanks Emilie. I bought the Panasonic GX8 this year for $400.00 New Zealand dollars. I immediately put it on electronic shutter as it had a high mechanical shutter count when I bought it. They are very rare in New Zealand along with a lot of your camera collection. I am very pleased with it too.
im starting to love your channel so much because we have alot in common, im just gutted why i didnt find it so early, wow cant believe you went to Griffiths observertory, i always wanted to shoot some pics there too, its on my buccket list lol
My GX8 is still *my baby* after 8 full years of use. Sometimes its olden-times video features make me want the G9ii, but for the most part I don't feel any need to upgrade because MY CAMERA IS JUST SO BEEYOOTIFUL! Honestly. I even had a high-schooler say so once while their class walked past me at an art museum. Don't people want their cameras to be lovely anymore? Have you tried the 100-400 on your GX8 yet, btw? I'd love to hear how the early IBIS compares to the new stuff on that lens in particular...
@@aaronmichaelhayworth4697 The original PL 100-400mm works remarkably well on my GX8 & I absolutely recommend it for anyone who has that camera body... but Dual IS 2 is supposed to be *even better* so I'm wondering if Emily has some wisdom on the matter.
Love this video! I think you’ve sold me on running down a GX8. Also, I hope you get a chance to get to Texas sometime and check out the Tower of the Americas in San Antonio
I found the same thing about EVFs! I live in the Inland Northwest, which is quite bright--especially compared to where I grew up in Seattle. I bought a Fuji X-M1, and within a year realized that I needed an EVF for composition. I was getting so annoyed at missing horizon straightness, visual rhythm compositions, and so many awkward edges. So, I picked up a X-T20. LOVE both cameras, but I can only shoot with the X-T20 most days. I thought it was just the old 2013 panel on the X-M1--but based on what you said, I think it might just be the sun. Thanks for another great video filled with fantastic photos and interesting thoughts.
Not to be funny, I’ve started wearing sunglasses while driving around in Seattle. It makes a big difference. I don’t squint during the entire ride. The sun isn’t out this time of the year but it is surprisingly bright here. Being old, I like an EVF vs. the LCD screen. One reason I’m not a Ricoh GRiii fan. To give that body it’s due, for this series, it may be the king of small cameras. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
One day we will have to get you up Sydney Tower. It is over 300 ft taller than the Space Needle, and also rotates while you relax. We need to start a "We need a GX8 Mark II" club. Sadly Panasonic would probably FIU like they did when they introduced the GX9. Like a camera without a flippy screen was going to please more than the dying breed of stills-only photographers.
I've been playing with a second hand GX85 I picked up for cheap recently. Even smaller than the GX8, but only 16MP and no weather sealing, among other differences. I love using it though. This morning I took it out along with the Fujifilm XE2 to do a side by side comparison. Preference? To be decided, but I do love these smaller, pocketable cameras. My main stills is an A7C and even though that's small by full frame standards with a pancake lens, it's still much bigger than those other cameras. 'Tiny' for me equates to 'fun' 😃
Hi Emily. Ref the viewfinder/rear screen point - I just cant get into photography without a viewfinder (I did try the GX850 you loved). It doesn't help that I need reading glasses which no one ever seems to mention as a negative when using the rear screen, which baffles me. Everyone seems to adore the GX8. I had the "upgraded" GX9 which seems to be a downgrade in some respects, notably the viewfinder and grip.
After the gh1, the gx8 was my first professional camera. Now i have the g9 wich i use for my Jobs, because its got a bigger grip, better AF and better stabilization. For all other things, i still use my gx8 and i loooove the viewfinder!!! The gx8 ist still my every day cam. :)
I love my GX8, but I wouldn't call it tiny. Been wondering, if I should have picked the GX9 instead, but I don't think so. I have used the articulating EVF for getting a lower angle when photographing musicians and DJ's on stage in a small venue. I did not enjoy the experience much - I just got a bit light headed, and not in a good way. I have also added an Olympus E-M5 iii to my line-up, and while the two cameras have the same megapixel count, they are very different cameras with the E-M5 iii being the smaller of the two cameras. I'll test that duo this upcoming weekend - hopefully with good results.
I really wish they'd take this body and pop the G9II sensor for phase detect and updated IBIS in it. My GX85 is still my favorite camera to carry. I can fit it, my GM5, and like 6-7 compact lenses in a teeny messenger bag. If I'm carrying my GH6, I can carry only it and 1 spare lens. I know pricing is a concern with the smaller cameras. It would be really cool if they did a GX and GXH versions so we could pay a little more to get all the video bells and whistles while not increasing the baseline cost (like S5II vs S5IIx).
Hello Emily, your video is really inspiring. I am using the GX8 since 2016 and the camera was never disappointing for me. I also own a GX9 since this year but I still prefer the GX8. The new MFT cameras are for my purposes (travelling) too bulky. Therefore I wish you furthermore good shots with your GX8 and enjoy your creativity with it!
I bought a secondhand GX8 and use MPB quite often. The GX8 purchase was because I wanted a range finder style camera, and it was much cheaper than a Pen-F. I've just got a secondhand GX9, but I'm not sure yet if it will stay.
The GX-8 is a great little camera - I had it and the Olumpus Pen F digital, and wound up selling all my cameras and most of my lenses and only keeping the Pen F and one other. But I did really enjoy using the GX-8 while I had it.
I have a GX8, a XS-10 and a M262. The main advantage of the GX8 for me, is the size of the lenses. For example the excellent and compact Olympus 75 f:1.8 and 12-40 pro, not to mention the expensive Panasonic Nocticron 42,5mm f:1.2. But to be honest, pur pleasure is for me the full manual Leica M.
I think the GX8 is a superb camera but... although its EVF and grip are far better than the GX9, and it is weather sealed, I do prefer the GX9 for street photography. It is smaller, a little lighter, has a tilting monitor and much better IBIS, together with a sensor without an AA filter. I also think some of the controls on the GX9 are better positioned and cannot be pressed inadvertently. With that said, for many settings other than street photography, I'll pick up the GX8 with a 14-140mm lens, and the firmware update seems to deal with the reported shutter shock.
I love my GX-8 and one of my favorite features is the articulating EVF! Unfortunately, it's having some issues... every 5th shot or so is overexposed.😢 I still wish they would update it and make a GX-9 or something...
@@benko7ab The GX8 is bigger than the GX9, has weather-sealing & a more popular EVF. We GX8 fans are hoping Lumix makes a *GX10* that properly updates the earlier, beefier model!
@@benko7ab Right, I’m looking for a true successor! I’m in Japan where the GX9 is called GX7 mark II. So it was really the spiritual successor to the GX7. That said, I think it is actually a little smaller than the GX8. As I remember now, it was missing some features like the full flippy screen.
I looked at the GX8 for a walk around camera but I wasn't crazy about some of the limitations of the older camera. I considered the GX9, but didn't want to pay that much for a walk around camera. I ran into a deal on E-Bay for the G95 with a lens I planned on buying anyway and the bundle was just $200 more than the lens itself would be. The G95 is only slightly larger and heavier than the Gx8, plus it is a much newer camera with good video capabilities and bonus features like live composite that I don't even have in my newer GH6. Paired with my 8-18 lens it works great. But I am considering a 12-35 2.8 or the 12-60 2.8-4.0 lens as the ultimate walk around combo. The Olympus 12-200 could also be interesting.
If you like Towers, than put Bratislava onto your To-Do list for next year. Its a fantastic city with jaw-dropping photo opportunities everywhere you look. And, best of all is the UFO Tower beside the river. So iconic! I went to visit my sister, who was teaching out there, and stayed in a floating hotel right beside the bridge and looking out to the tower. You can even take a day trip to Vienna, in Austria, on a boat along the Danube. That place is awesome!
Have just discovered your videos and loving them!! I have to go bare bones budget right now so it's a toss up between a Lumix DMC-G85 and an Olympus OM-D E-M1. You mostly mention Lumix, and wondered if that was just a personal preference. Also heard that Olympus is selling off their camera business so... what would be your pearl of wisdom on which to choose? Many thanks! Now to get the popcorn and watch more of your videos...
Nice trip and photos and review Emily! One question, if you would have ime to answer: what were your gears for this trip? I understood 14mm, 25mm and 12-60 ? May be a zoom for a bigger reach? Do you have regrets with your set of gears during the trip? thanks in advance
Hi Emily. Still wanting to upgrade my amazing Olympus e-pl3. I have narrowed it down to two cameras: Lumix G85 w/ a 12 mm - 60 mm lens, or an Olympus OM-D-E-10 Mark IV. with the pancake 14-42 mm (EZ) zoom. The Lumix is $100 cheaper but has a 16 mp sensor versus a 20.4 mp sensor. Which would you choose and why? Thanks for your swift reply.
I have a GX9 and I feel the articulating viewfinder is more annoying than useful because everytime I take it out if a bag, the viewfinder often snags and it worries me that some day it might snap off.
I was using GX7/85/8/9 before, but always wanted to try something else, then went through Fujifilm and Olympus, but since the first day I parted with GX I always have a feeling of lost in my heart.
The gx85 is smaller and has many of the same features. Very cheap new in the US market. A few less dials and I sometimes hate its white balance but good in other ways. Also, strikes me painting your camera purple and white is a great anti theft device for the US user :D
I've had Micro Four Thirds cameras from the beginning (I still have my Lumix G1). I have noticed of late, that M4/3 cameras seem to be getting, shall we say, larger in the girth and heavier with it. Even some of the pro lenses are not the tiny light weight things that they used to be. For me, the smaller light weight cameras and lenses is what M 4/3 should be what it is about. For now, I absolutely love my older Lumix G7 (yes, I know it's only 16mp), which is super light with a bag full of equally light lenses.
Haha I totally agree. I think the strength of this system is keeping it compact! I love the g7. It was the second m43 camera I ever bought and it absolutely blew me away. So light for travelling too!
@@MicroFourNerds Another plastic fantastic. Have both the G7 & G9. Yes the G9 is bigger & heavier. When going out with a large body this is the one I select. Love the IBIS which the G7 lacks. Need a camera for stills only? The GX9 comes along to play. When I purchased the GX9 the P12-60mm kit lens came with it. Was going to sell it to help pay for the body. I have the PL12-60mm lens. Turns out I like the 12-60. I love the versatility of the focal length. It is getting more time on the GX9 than the PL15. Who knew? Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
Thanks for the video. This is the camera I want from Panasonic or OM System. Hopefully they finally get tired of these comments and make one, haha. Just yesterday it was reported that OM System is making a “very high end” camera, possibly an OM-1X. While this is great for the M43 market and wildlife shooters, it does not fit with my interests. OM, in particular, seems fixated on the “REI ad” or “Nat Geo assignment” aesthetic.
I own both the GX 85 and GX nine. The GX9 is an incremental improvement over the GX 85. 16 megapixels versus 20 megapixels. I can’t see the difference. The GX9 has slightly better ibis and video features. Maybe not worth the upgrade. The one feature of the GX9 has that I love that the GX 85 lacks is L monochrome D. This setting is my favorite B&W setting. The GX85 is cheap. A good body alone on MPB is selling for $354. You can get the two lens kit from B&H for $650. I can recommend this body from personal experience. I have the black body. A real looker. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
@@martingreenberg870 thank you for the insightful reply! Does the gx85 have a BW mode? I’m not quite sure what L monochrome D is. Thank you, in advance
@@Deetroiter Yes. The GX85 has a B&W mode. L monochrome D is a mode that appears in the G9 and GX9. It is one of several jpeg modes baked into lumix cameras. L monochrome D is a very contrasting look that crushes the blacks. I dislike when blacks look grey. This is my favorite B&W jpeg simulation. It is one B&W look. There are several B&W looks. Find or develop a look you like. The GX85 is a highly competent camera and can be bought from about $350. I’ve seen GX8 bodies in the $400+ range. Find a body you like and then use it. Good luck. @@martingreenberg870 appreciate that advice. My only experience with MFT system was an imported lumix dc-gf9 that was Japanese market only and couldn’t change the language at all for the camera. Santa Monica sunset. Thank the pollutants in the air for your sunset. Thank you for this video. I just purchased a GX8 because of your video. Like bobstephenson956 I have gone from the GX9 to a GX8. I also have a GX85 (80). Love these small body powerhouses. The 85 & 9 have better IBIS. 8 has no IBIS in 4K video. Thank goodness one can use an IS lens in that case. The 8 has an audio jac (yea!) but only 2.5mm. Why? Thank you Panasonic for including an audio jac in ANY GX body. It seems nuts, to me, such a little body with all this video goodness I hoveled by the audio jac lack. The GX line doesn’t compete with the GH bodies. Hope the next GX body has a 3.5mm audio in jac plus phase detection. I’d buy that in a nano second. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
This seems to be as rare as hens' teeth. I can't find it for sale anywhere. Did they not sell well? Did they sell under a different name in some places?
You said "Suddenly the sky went purple" and I heard it as "Suddenly this guy went purple". I was waiting for the story of Emily the Heroine saving someone from a choking fit!
In a round about way... it affected very specific shutter speeds (1/60 to 1/150th or so... around there!) And the firmware shifts the camera into electronic shutter for the affected shutter speeds. It was only on a select few lenses, usually the tele lenses, rather than primes. So it hasn't been an issue for me thankfully!
I use my GX-8 with manual lenses. Most, if not all, mirrorless cameras will take manual lenses with an adapter. Just look for the features you want in your price range, make sure it has a mode to shoot without a lens, and you're golden!
Yep! As @figjoy says, most cameras will do it just fine 😊 bonus points if the camera offers magnification and focus peaking to help with manual focus. The gx8 does both, its quite a common feature, but might be worth double checking before you buy whichever one you decide on
Would tend to agree, as someone who has owned a GX8 for 5 years and grew up on a Practika MTL5. The GX8 body is just right for my hands, rather than small; as ever the smallness comes largely from the lenses. It lives quite happily either on a PD capture clip or in one hand, which is really secure due to the grip.
Tks for your video. I just laughed at LA is so much bigger.. it’s not bigger, its wider, empty, more rooms for cars than for ppl. Compared to Europe. Hard to use anything below 50mm when doing street photography besides NYC.
Looking for a new M4/3 camera at the moment the more of your videos I watch the more I think I should get a Gx8 Don't care about Video at all so looks more or less like the perfect option
@@MicroFourNerds The GX9 is a newer camera than the GX8. I think the GX9 has better video. As @Amphibax doesn’t care about video, never mind. The GX8 does have the audio in jack I wish the GX9 lacks. There is no perfect camera. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
I was all anticipating the story and possible pics about the purple-faced weirdo in the bar at 6:02, until I realized you'd just pulled a Jimi Hendrix. "and then THE SKY went purple", not "and then THIS GUY went purple".
So we watched the superbowl every year but didn't follow any particular team, then when the seahawks obliterated the Broncos and won one year, we got the gamepass and decided to watch the older games from Wilson's rookie season onwards... and made the superbowl the next year.... and well we all know how that turned out 😂 been chasing the dragon ever since haha watching every game
Even after adding Lumix FF line to my MFT gear, the GX8 remains my absolute favorite. And I do use the articulating viewfinder A LOT. I get totally different photos and the joy of use with it. Being a huge fan of viewfinder shooting, the GX8 gives me the chance to get almost a TLR feel to the images. It also makes it easy to get the low angle shots without resorting to the washed out screen. (My eyesight also loves it much better). The GX8 is my go to for travel and at times event photography. I just with Panasonic came out with a mk2 that is not the downgraded GX9.
When I saw the Griffith observatory I was sure there would be a collaboration video with the GoPro and m43 hater iPhooooooneDooooo... I pray to the spring Gods, the easter bunny and the sun that in the month of april there will be some real camera news. Surely the GH7 is just around the corner...
I initially wanted to get the GX8 but instead went for a brand new GX85 bundled with the 12-32mm and 45-150mm kit lenses. I do wish the GX85 received the tilting EVF because I once tried a GX8 and I found it so useful.
Gx8 чересчур дорогая и редкая здесь, думаю мне придется использовать 80й, или сопоставимый по цене олимпус... А когда закончатся и Олимпус то придется гулять с никон 5300+40 йонгнуо

+1 to the GX10 wishes.
How did you find the GX8's swivel screen, as opposed to the tilt one on the GX9 ?

Especially for us older folks who have a hard time seeing near, I find the articulating EVF of my GX7 more useful than the LCD panel.
I love my GX8. I have a G9 which is awesome but I find myself gravitating to the GX8 more and more. When I am out and about the G9 is on my tripod and the GX8 is always ready in my Peak Design clip. Keep up the good work and hope that you enjoyed your trip overseas. JP
The rotating floor used to be a restaurant. Great night views with dinner.
Ah that’s such an interesting insight about US vs UK street photography! I’m based in UK and looking to get a 40mm lens for tighter compositions
Loving my gx8 as a street machine. Paired usually with ttartisan 25mm f2 and sometimes the lumix 30-100, its so nice to use and gets me amazing shots.
Those were absolutely beautiful photographs that you took on your vacation.
I absolutely love that camera ,
I'm not sure but I think this was the first Panasonic Lumix M43 camera too still have 12-bit raw from electronic shutter.
Some of the older Panasonic Lumix cameras the electronic shutter is 10-bit raw.
Getting a gx8 next week cannot wait to get it. Your vids definitely helped push me to get a mft camera and the gx8 specifically.

I have the OM5 and some Panasonic Lenses and they work great
@@jimblues21 A major benefit of the M43 system is both Olympus and Panasonic use the same lens mount.

Such lovely pics! What a little gem, I think I need one 🥲
Looking forward to showing you the Telemax & Telemoritz in Hannover!
And of course the English Garden and some more interesting buildings 😉
Nicely done. I love using the GX9, and the 25 f1.4 and 14 f2.5 are excellent lenses that I get a lot of enjoyment out of.
Yes I’d love to know this about the 100-400 ii with GX8. I have been pining after it so long.
I think I favour my E-M10 iii over my GX80 but they are both excellent. I'd be happier if they were weather sealed but I can work around that.
Love this video! I think you’ve sold me on running down a GX8. Also, I hope you get a chance to get to Texas sometime and check out the Tower of the Americas in San Antonio
I had a early micro thirds Lumix back in the day then moved up to APSC and full frame to get better colors and low light shots
To give that body it’s due, for this series, it may be the king of small cameras.

an articulating evf as well as articulating screens are great for macro work, to get the lowest possible angles :)
At 0:46 you stood in front of a piece of a very famous graffitiartist. TAME was also known as a Rapper from The Artifacts… Lucky you 😃
I've been playing with a second hand GX85 I picked up for cheap recently.
One of my bigger regrets is selling my gx85 a few years back. Its so good!
Use a gx80 as a walk about plus the 12-42 and45-150 which fits in coat pockets, perfect for walks and breaks
Purple sky 🤯 and steam punk tower of course awesome. As EDC e-pl7 (better than 5 and 6 as it has dial and WiFi) with TTArtisan 25 f2.
Hey really love your channel. I just grabbed a lumix gx85 with 20mm - your fault - and thanks! Love it!
Got my GX8 from a flea market for only 150$ and a 20 1.7II for the same price. Best purchase ever :>
That is such a bargain omg haha well done!
WOW. Great eye. Enjoy your new camera & lens.

Unfortunately, it's having some issues... every 5th shot or so is overexposed.😢
I still wish they would update it and make a GX-9 or something...
Have you left exposure bracketing turned on?
There is a GX-9 but you know that right. Is the gx-8 more compact?
@@benko7ab The GX8 is bigger than the GX9, has weather-sealing & a more popular EVF. We GX8 fans are hoping Lumix makes a *GX10* that properly updates the earlier, beefier model!
@@benko7ab Right, I’m looking for a true successor! I’m in Japan where the GX9 is called GX7 mark II. So it was really the spiritual successor to the GX7.
That said, I think it is actually a little smaller than the GX8. As I remember now, it was missing some features like the full flippy screen.
I absolutely love that viewfinder as well.

Mostly I walk with Sony RX100VI and RicohGR but also with Lumix GX9 + 14 -140 mm lens but I think about buying the Leica 12-60
Hey I couldn’t help noticing the nice-looking smart watch…Garmin Fenix?
I was using GX7/85/8/9 before, but always wanted to try something else, then went through Fujifilm and Olympus, but since the first day I parted with GX I always have a feeling of lost in my heart.
The gx85 is smaller and has many of the same features. Very cheap new in the US market. A few less dials and I sometimes hate its white balance but good in other ways. Also, strikes me painting your camera purple and white is a great anti theft device for the US user :D
Is the old live mos sensor actually better than newer cmos sensor?
Nice towers in Auckland (NZ) and Sydney (Aus) if you ever get down this way.
Who knew?

Thanks for the video. This is the camera I want from Panasonic or OM System. Hopefully they finally get tired of these comments and make one, haha. Just yesterday it was reported that OM System is making a “very high end” camera, possibly an OM-1X. While this is great for the M43 market and wildlife shooters, it does not fit with my interests. OM, in particular, seems fixated on the “REI ad” or “Nat Geo assignment” aesthetic.
OK.
What camera are they releasing? 😎 Hope its compact and more MP.🤓
Fantastic video! I’m still learning about the MFT system. Can you suggest the Lumix gx85 in 2023?

I would not call the GX8 tiny, but it is a great camera. Anyways thanks for your great channel.

This seems to be as rare as hens' teeth. I can't find it for sale anywhere. Did they not sell well? Did they sell under a different name in some places?
I said it before, I'll say it again. Can't wait for the GX8 markII (which... will probably never happen)

😂😂😂😂 amazing
GX8 is famous for its shutter shock issue... was it finally resolve via firmware update ?
In a round about way... it affected very specific shutter speeds (1/60 to 1/150th or so... around there!) And the firmware shifts the camera into electronic shutter for the affected shutter speeds. It was only on a select few lenses, usually the tele lenses, rather than primes. So it hasn't been an issue for me thankfully!
Hard to find GX8.
This vs gx7 ?
Good video. But gx8 not really tiny. End up choosing my gm5 and gf9 for my recent travel.
Any recommendation to which camera body best pair with manual focus lens?! Thanks 👍🏼
The gx8 does both, its quite a common feature, but might be worth double checking before you buy whichever one you decide on
is it lighter than the G100?. besides weather sealing they should be very similar - the OIS (but having the 12-35 prb fixes that)
I think the g100 is both a little smaller and lighter 😊
lack of shutter prevents me from using the G100 for proper macro sadly :S@@MicroFourNerds

I love my GX8.
I'm from Washington state originally. How'd you end up supporting the Seahawks?:)
The GX8 is one of my favorite cameras, but I would not describe it as "tiny." It's even borderline as small.

Don't care about Video at all so looks more or less like the perfect option
The gx9 is also a little smaller and less video features. But a similar design 😁 usually a bit cheaper used!
@@MicroFourNerds The GX9 is a newer camera than the GX8. I think the GX9 has better video. As @Amphibax doesn’t care about video, never mind. The GX8 does have the audio in jack I wish the GX9 lacks. There is no perfect camera.

I was all anticipating the story and possible pics about the purple-faced weirdo in the bar at 6:02, until I realized you'd just pulled a Jimi Hendrix.
"and then THE SKY went purple", not "and then THIS GUY went purple".
Curious how you ended up becoming a fan of American football and of the Seahawks in particular...
@@MicroFourNerds One of the best logos in all of sports. Current uniforms, not so much (but the older ones are awesome!).
Leica CL is much better, yes its expensive but the colour rendition is better, with the 23mm f2
I initially wanted to get the GX8 but instead went for a brand new GX85 bundled with the 12-32mm and 45-150mm kit lenses. I do wish the GX85 received the tilting EVF because I once tried a GX8 and I found it so useful.
It’s a gx9…
Nikon 1 J4
Gx8 чересчур дорогая и редкая здесь, думаю мне придется использовать 80й, или сопоставимый по цене олимпус...
А когда закончатся и Олимпус то придется гулять с никон 5300+40 йонгнуо
Until panasonic or OM release a proper small body MFT with usb C, I will not bother with wasting my time on them anymore.
Loads have usb c 😊 gh5, gh6, g9, g9ii on lumix side off the top of my head. Olympus more stingy... criminal the om5 doesn't have it. The om1 does thankfully
And small…he says.
I'd love a waterproof camera, but the doggone waterproof lenses cost an arm and a leg :-/
I have a "landscape photography for any budget" video which breaks down the cheapest weather sealed options if you haven't seen it already 😁
@@MicroFourNerds thank you! Sounds exactly what I need (before I make any decision). I know this autumn I've been often wishing I had a waterproof setup...
i have a gx8 and have been nothing but disappointed. its noisier than my 2008 mft dslr when shooting raw 😐
You can just say that America is a car dependent hellscape lol not just "spread out"
It did make me laugh when Google maps didn't even offer a walking option like it does in the UK 😂
