Most lawn-management seems to arise from OCD and a sense of aesthetics.(As well as unhappy men 'escaping' from domesticity to the saddle of their lawnmowers) I'm somewhat sympathetic to Australians who obsess over short-cropped, weed-free lawns solely as a means to deter brown snakes from the home (alternatives needed). The fumes from whippersnippers and mowers are much more noxious, unfiltered and unregulated than those of automobiles. The sound pollution from whole suburbs of mowers and leafblowers is undoubtedly harmful to our mental and physical health and also affects the stress levels and reproductive rates of the native wildlife, particularly our endangered marsupials. I miss Mollison railing against lawn-management and the cultural torpor. His dogged indignance was highly motivational.
Not had lawn for 25 years. However if you like lawns and must have them, why not try a mix of say 25 different seeds including grasses, native grasses, legumes, umbelliferous plants, even yam daisies etc and cut it for green manure for your other beds.?
Fun fact, Monsanto (Now BAYER pharmaceuticals) had one of the original patents for synthetic grass.... Nothing quite like making product to kill grass and also owning the patent to the synthetic alternative, eh?! - Corryn.

I use grass clippings accept I don't have enough lawn now. So, I cut my neighbors lawn for clippings. She bought over a cake for me.
