I didn't watch Sale of the Century much during its original run because of work. Thank goodness for Buzzr. I can see this show and other game shows whenever I want. Even though some of the hosts, announcers and panelists are no longer with us, it's good to see them. Brings back wonderful childhood memories.
May Sale Of The Century live on to all the fans, NBC, contestants who were on & the lives they had changed when winning. Sale Of The Century, Reg Grundy, NBC & Jim Perry such a perfect match made for game show heaven for 6 & a quarter years on NBC(including Card Sharks also on NBC)
This was his final appearance on TV In America until Cash Tornado in 1994. After $ale left in 1989, he left Canadian TV in 1990 Jim Perry was a legend and he will be missed. R.I.P. Jim Perry November 9, 1933-November 20, 2015
Sadly the late 80s/early 90s was the beginning of the end of most daytime major network game shows. Sadder still was the fact that Jim Perry never got another hosting gig after this. I thought he would have been a sensational successor to Bob Barker on "Price is Right", but that never came to pass. Also very sad that Tom Kennedy's short run on "WordPlay" would turn out to be his final hosting gig too. Both of these incredible emcees were out of work much too soon. May they both rest in peace.
He did continue Definition in Canada for a little bit after this and he would host a Mark Goodson pilot in 94 called "Cash Tornado" but yeah otherwise that was it. ☹ I think they should have hired him for the let's make a deal revival in 1990. He would have been great at that.
@@marcpower4167 His stint in Canada at the time also included hosting the Miss Canada pageant on CTV. His last would be the 1991 edition that was held in 1990
Yes, the late 80's, early 90's were inundated with talk shows or as I sometimes call it "Trash TV". and that was a shame that we had succumbed to that on daytime network television. I loved some of these game show finales, even though it was sad to say goodbye to them. A time capsule. RIP to Mr. Perry. .

Jim Perry and Richard Dawson= the 2 BEST game show hosts EVER.
WOW!! Thanks so much for posting this!! I never got to see the original and since I dont like at home in the States anymore there's no way to catch reruns.
Now there's love.....Jim right out of the gate recognizes his wife and says if it wasn't for her, he wouldn't be where he is standing....and then at the end of his speech she puts her hand on his chest and kisses him, and he instinctively grabs her hand. That's the type of love we all want....
What a supportive wife she was, Jim was super busy much of his career, had 3 shows at once for a long time between the US and Canada. He couldn't have had much spare time. That can be trying on a marriage but they stayed together. ❤
That would be wonderful if you could post it in its entirety. I have Jim's book "The Sleeper Awakes" which I have read cover-to-cover - so its very fascinating to have read that and to be seeing this clip... I also had the pleasure of attending some tapings of CS and SotC during the short time I lived in LA in the '80's - great to be seeing who I think is one of the best emcees of all time.
+Ryan Zwolinski Mr Jim Perry is dead? He and Sale Of the century awarded merchandise, money, and more to qualified contestants. Up to date, there's no shows as this anymore. wh
@catbeast2007 Most definitely. My brother and I used to enjoy watching this show when USA Network reran it almost two decades ago. I don't know if it's been rerun anywhere since 1994.

What about in Detroit? Did my NBC affilite WDIV get the special report on the Exxon Valdez oil spill during the credits of the Sale of the Century finale? I want the same episode uploaded but on the east coast feed taken from WDIV from Detroit to see where the special report got in.
+Kevin Barton Growing up watching Jim Perry on Definition and Headline Hunters here in Canada, you couldn't imagine my disappointment when I found out he was a born American.
It's been almost 25 years already! Interesting stuff in the closing credits - Stan Blits was a tech director, currently on The Price is Right, a mention of Rolf and Vanna on Wheel of Fortune. Rolf Benirschke was only host of Wheel daytime for about six months after Pat left to host a late night talk show.
Wow. You don't see "backstage" endings like this every day. I'm just now coming across your videos, and I'm surprised you were able to get access to these master tapes -- they're usually locked away in a vault and never seen again. Thanks!
1. MittDawson, I saw your name in the credits. Is that you? Your family lived in Houston in which I heard from Jim Perry in a 1988 episode when he mentioned that your family now watches on KPRC in which Sale joined it's daytime schedule in the one video. My NBC station WDIV in Detroit (KPRC's sister station) had aired it's entire NBC run. 2. Did the Detroit NBC station get the news bulletin on the Exxon Valdez incident during the credits?
I think that same day "Card Sharks"(with Bob Eubanks) and "Super Password"(Bert Convy) also ended. When those 2 shows plus $ale of the Century ended that day, I think it's a safe bet that the game show era had officially ended.

Mitt, as part of the production staff, what were part of your duties working on this show? Also, what was Jim Perry like? I'm guessing he had a lot of frequent flyer miles considering he also hosted "Definiton" in Canada. What else have you worked on?
Now, Mitt, correct me if I'm wrong, but I heard that on the day this episode was broadcast, Jim's final goodbye was cut short in the Eastern and Central Time Zones because of an NBC Special Report. I heard it was on the Exxon Valdez crash in Alaska. Is that true?
+Janel Lamar So that's what spoiled the series finale for EST/CST zones. This wouldn't happen again until the Persian Gulf War knocked off Generations, in 1991.
Thanks to Shrub Sr.'s pep talk cutting in at 10:21AM EST on 3/24/89, this final $otC segment wasn't seen by most until a decade later thanks to the internet trading circuit.
sean vogt Thank you. I thought it was Kristian Alfonso of "Days of Our Lives". So NBC began doing "The More You Know" in September 1988? Wikipedia says September 1989.
Very sorry to hear about Jim's passing. He was truly a talent. I'm sure he made you and the staff laugh at times. He will me missed.

actually Jim Perry made a guest appearance on Studs in 1991 when Mark DeCarlo hosted.
Jim Perry would've been great to have hosted a prime time million dollar game show. I wonder what he had going on in his life in 1999/2000.
Life will NEVER be the same until we go back to this type of LIFE with stuff like this end of story RIP JP and Summer was Hot!
"Wheel Of Fortune" is featured in one of the television screens in the "Sale Of The Century" control room.

Buzzr airing of this same finale ended with the Fremantle “Coffee Shop” logo.
2:23 onwards - a very fitting ending to one of America's greatest game shows ever.
Some did not get to see this. It was the day of the Exxon Valdez oil spill.
Hey, Mitt. Thanks for letting us get a glimpse of the beautiful Stepfanie Kramer. What a BABE!
Rip Jim. greatly missed.
This ended the same day as "Super Password" did, but "Scrabble" lasted until 1990, and came back for a few months in 1993.

Jim Perry deserves his star on Canada's Walk of fame. For shows like Eye Bet, Headline Hunters, the Miss Canada Pageant and of course Definition.

Ms. "Game Show Craver" must not really have been so much of one, as she left out "Super Password" and "Scrabble".
That's okay. That means she shut up sooner.
I turned 7 four days before the finale
Anyone have a link to the theme they used here while rolling the credits?

I hope this show airs on GSN this summer:)
Within a year or so, the rest of the NBC game shows would meet their end. Only TPIR stands as monument to the past.

syncated shows as well since he metioned that he did almost 2000 shows
does anyone have the theme here in the clear?
I think that's Don Morrow (the announcer) standing in back. Did he ever have hair?
He didn't have to! His son's name was in the credits.
@rksncu - they both celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary and currently have a pottery company in North Carolina.

Question, you said this was episode #1578, is that only including NBC Daytime shows, or does that count the 1985-1986 syndicated shows as well?
March 24, 1989....that was the oil spill in Alaska

Incredible. At least there is something good. I think that this ended along with Scrabble that year.
Scrabble ended the following year
Scrabble ended in 1990. Some of those staff members who worked on Sale of the Century transferred to Scrabble till the end of the run.
