Great vidéo. I already try to improve my paintings by finding what are my weaknesses, but these advices make me more determined to ask for constructive criticism and think about following some ondine classes. Thank you very much Michelle. 👍🏻😊
I don't think you said anything I don't know - you did remind me of things that I need to hear. The idea of accepting resistance is a signal that I need to focus on the thing I'm avoiding. That I need to draw every day. I know all of the things you said, but they are all ideas/advice that we need to be reminded of. Thanks Michele!
This is one of the most motivational art videos that I've ever watched. As I listened, I realized how sluggish I've been in my practicing, and I'm going to turn this around beginning tonight. I also realized that the reason I'm not producing any art these days is because of my need for perfection, and the fact is that I will never achieve anything close to the level of art that I desire until I learn to work through the skills necessary to achieve that instead of saying my work is garbage and just giving up. Thank you, Michelle!!!!
When I started this journey my objective was to draw two sketches every day. My paint along friend was a friend from kindergarten sixty years ago. We thought everything was beautiful. I looked for a TH-cam teacher not for hyperactive entertainment or ninety minutes with a group. I must say I watched more than usual after a bilateral knee replacement at the age of 70. I found Michele to be the best of the best and I felt I would gladly pay $10/week to study along. I’m glad I found this group since I paint daily with a five year old. Our source of entertainment is art supplies on Amazon and watching out for the mailman. I still sketch two things in my bed at night in my art therapy position. I’m relaxed and surprised to see the things I drew in my sleep.
Spot on. It needs to be said. While art is fun, it requires WORK. Two quotations helped me a lot "..inspiration only finds you when you are working.." (Picasso); and an art "self help" book (can't recall name) enjoined the reader "...amateurs wait for inspiration, professionals get to work..."

This is an excellent video! You have described my story in many ways. I started in a lovely class with many talented people. I compared compared compared myself to tears and frustration. Later i joined another group and started off much the same until i just bucked up and started being critical of my work and asking questions. Most of those friends wanted me to love what i did and to stop “putting myself down”. But that wasn’t it. I wanted help to improve and I could see where i needed it. They were very helpful when i asked. Then i advanced to help on TH-cam. Wow! What a gold mind! I focused on what skills i wanted to learn and I have been going like blazes on deliberate practice. The painting group are now shaking their heads wondering how i have advanced so quickly, but i study and practice every day from some incredible people like you! I am motivated to paint every afternoon while my husband relaxes with TV or his woodworking. And I still have so many wonderful things to learn! I am no longer defeated but energized and hopeful that i will learn the next new skill to add to my skill set. It is a journey and i am thankful to be on it.

I have been searching for tips and best practice in videos, books, magazines and lots of trial and error. Not there yet but it's coming along. I agree whole heartedly that if I have an aversion to a process or skill, it's probably what I need to focus on the most. Then I get through the fear of it.
Michele, thank you for this important talk. I went to college at age 49 to learn art because I always loved it as a very young girl. It was not encouraged at home to pursue art so I never did. I am not great at drawing so I really hope you offer a course. I do use deliberate practice in painting and in some ways drawing in preparation.
Well thanks for this. Changing your art is almost like changing you behavior in general. It's not always easy to honestly face where we are, and that is an impediment.
Michelle, I have started to make my own ink and watercolour paint and it’s sooo rewarding when your man tells you that this paint is the most beautiful pigment that I have worked with watercolour painting. I have tried many different pigments, without telling me your proportions and ingredients, which companies are your favorite.
@@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber i juste ordered from Jackson, 6 arches pad…. Gosh the shipping is expensive to be delivered in Québec. But still worth the price. Never tried the Daniel’s but I have some in my basket, I am thinking to buy the primaries colours and make my own colour mixes. (For my watercolour and ink that I made recently was the Mixol pigments. I definitely suggesting you to try those pigment in you home made watercolour. Do you use smith to create your watercolour paint? )
Dear Ms Webber, in many ways this is the most valuable video that you have produced and I must humbly thank you for it.. We all can use the advice that you give so generously . Myself first. I am perpetually amazed by the way the most valuable things in life are ACTUALLY to be had for free. Thank you again, forever. .
thanks Michele, I have learned valuable tips for watercolor. I had been an artist for 19 years now and you have definitely helped my watercolor pics. thanks from Ontario, Canada!
And yes yes yes yes yes yes yes technical skills!!!!! Omg yes. Drawing is the fundamental basis of it all. Just of everything in art, I truly believe that. And you can tell a hundred miles away if someone just doesn’t want to go the hard yards with technical skills. I feel like cheering. Drawing is SO important!!!!🤗
I've been using colored pencils, watercolor pencils, and watercolor paints for eons, always finding new inspiration and understanding with each TH-cam video and course I take. I very much appreciate your expertise and enthusiasm (particularly: practice and don't give up!).
The Facebook group is absolutely a supportive group! I’m getting a lot of tips and constructive advice, Great video Michelle, very good advice, now I just have to take it onboard!
This is probably a very stupid question, so please excuse my ignorance. By "taking it onboard" do you mean "to practice Michele's advice" or that you are taking a cruise and will be painting during your trip??? I am from America, and grew up in a poor region where most people did not have the cash to buy art supplies. Hence, I was not able to paint. I did have pencils and plain copy paper, when one teacher was benevalant and allowed me to take a few pieces of copy paper every once in awhile to use at home.
At the start of my journey I didn’t really know what to do to keep me motivated or how to make improvements until I began watching videos of watercolor painting. I am thrilled to say that you’re one of my favorites teachers that I watch regularly, and I have recently joined your Facebook group too. I have been doing a monthly doodlewash challenge for a couple of months now and this October I decided to add inktober too. I have found that my drawing skills are improving now with daily practice. I still have to work on asking for criticism of my work for improvement. Thanks for sharing this important video with us.
Thank you Michele for you wise and very thoughtful advice. I find you so easy to listen to and understand. I am looking forward to putting your tips into practice as I continue following my dream.
This video definitely hits home. I don't like to draw, because I have convinced myself that I can't draw. I definitely need to heed your advice and start deliberate practice immediately. Thank you very much for making this video!!
Thanks for the great pointers. As a new watercolour artists, starting in COVID times, I’ve had to rely completely on online tutoring. Yourself included! I’m encouraged to hear about challenging myself to learn what I’m most hesitant to try. I appreciate your work Michelle. Keep well.
An excellent video. It really helps to analyse and face fears to improve. If you want it bad enough, you will overcome obstacles to make deliberate effort/ practice to improve. 😊
In your other video that you made on how you became a professional artist I just wanted to say that you should also be both a motivational speaker as well as a life coach. I feel that you would be good at both of these jobs.
I am starting again at age 70....and I am finding this advice very helpful. It almost seems like a way to evolve emotionally as well....I agree that we are learning to draw to actually train ourselves how to really see. I have avoided nature or forest scenes because i would get frustrated with all the leaves and and I feel like I would have to study botany to do it well. But I want to do it to capture the healing and magic in nature..... And learn to see what makes an oak different from a yew or redwood.... yes it is frustrating when people only want to do it their way.....
This is absolutely wonderful! I have been practising deliberate practice (yes sorry I got that too late😂) for as long as l’ve been painting. College was good at introducing this kind of self dialogue, but it’s not the only path to being an artist...deliberate practice is the path of growth. Wonderful!
In the Studio with Michele Webber well my best time was with my friends, they were fun. The Dean was a nightmare. There were too many egos teaching there, for sure. It’s hit and miss really isn’t it? I think I concentrate on the good cos we’re all still close. And nutters:)
Thanks for the great tips! I am also a calligrapher, and have taken many calligraphy classes. We always talk about intentional practice, and your tips are so universal that they are nearly the same! Something I do that is helpful is to date each practice and write my practice goal somewhere on the paper. When I feel discouraged and as if I'm not progressing, I can look back at earlier practices and see that I have actually improved! This was my teacher's suggestion and it may help your students too 😃 BTW, comparison has gotten me down in the past too!
The good thing about art is that you can see your progression. I do martial arts and you don't feel you are doing any better because you can't easily see how you were when you started!
For some reason I thought drawing a portrait and actually getting a likeness was just not something that would possible for me to do. So I took a virtual class about portrait drawing and facial anatomy and turns out, yes I can do that and it was fun. And then I realized I probably can learn to draw whatever I want to draw if I learn the basic principles and practice. Focusing on what I thought I couldn't do in the end was a big boost to my confidence in trying new things. Also sometimes I tell myself "today I am going to do a bad painting" and if I'm wrong then all the better.
I haven't started yet (I do have some supplies) but watching a lot of your vids to start to get familiar with terms, supplies needed etc. But this vid is like a precursor....a pep talk for ppl like me who tend to be defeatists, think I'll never get something and on and on. I paid attention to this! Tfs
Glad I’ve found you. I’ve painted for many years but never really nailed it. But I’m focusing now and want to exhibit and sell, but I need to up my standard, so really looking forward to learning more from you4 channel. I love water colour, especially layering system of painting. Subbed. Thanks for you4 vids
That's really helpful, Michelle, and thank you very much. I made a list of the ten things, but realised that I had to put something in before anything else. This is what I wrote at the top of the list : 'Your environment for any activity is important. Set up an art 'area' where you can leave your work out, and are able to return to it easily.' Seems obvious, but I was working out of a cardboard box, and just going to an art class once a week, so I decided to allocate a corner of a room for my Art work! The ways you have helped me are too numerous to mention! Thanks once again, diolch yn fawr iawn, Den, Llangyfelach.
Thanks Denis, so glad you found it useful! Unfortunately for many people it's really hard to make a space for art, I worked for years on a table that had to be cleared for my daughter's homework or sorting laundry. It makes a big difference to have a dedicated workspace 🙂
Hi Michelle, some good life coach advice! These 10 pointers are even relevant, and can be applied to change ones outlook and focus during covid! Thank you, Thinus Lundie
I have just finished setting up my Sennelier palette. It was a job for me keeping numbers straight. You are the only artis who uses Rembrandt. I have a nice collection of half pans which I don’t use as they are too dull. I feel like I don’t know how to use them properly. I would appreciate a few tips. Thanks for such wonderful content.
I use lots of brands but I started with Rembrandt so have a soft spot for them. My tips for using duller, more muted colours is to keep them to specific areas. They can actually work really well in contrast to brighter, stronger colours. What you don't want to do is to let them mix through all your other colours, because then any opacity, dullness or granulation will pollute your whole palette.
You’re right about having only friends look at your work.....That’s a really good idea......I’m just kidding. I can see that during this Covid epidemic, it may be beneficial for me to seek more objective consultations. I only do “art” for myself. Right now I’m obsessed with colored pencils but have recently bought some watercolor paints . It’s been years since I’ve done this. That is also why I’ve been looking at all your tutorials. It’s nice to have refresher courses after such a long time. Plus, you are a really good teacher. Thank you.
I am trying to be as skilled as I can get and attending your channel is my classroom and I am understanding water color s much better. I have always liked them but wasn't very good at using them.
I have looked through the playlist hoping that you have done something about the differences between watercolor and acyrilic paints. People have gifted me with beautiful sets of acrylics but I really don't know how to use them and they are not watercolor.
@@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber 💌Thank you for answering and I will try to find the tutor you have suggested. But I will still be with you. Watercolors are so interesting and you really are a good teacher.

Another wonderfully informative video. Thank you so much, I've learned a great deal. I view your videos almost every day over & over so the information sinks in. You are now my best art instructor. Deliberate practice is focused, targeted & the best way to move ahead in your art. Thanks again!
I think I have already taken on board the importance of practice and a structural approach to learning but I found this a good reminder of how I could learn more efficiently. What, based on your own and teaching experience, are the three things that aspiring watercolourists have to get reasonably competent at? I was told to play scales and arpeggios when I learnt the piano 65 years ago. Are there any equivalent exercises for people learning water colour techniques? Jacky
@@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber Feel I have made a reasonable start with 1st and 2nd suggestion but not 3rd - do you have a video on subject to help Jacky
Thanks for some great ideas. I have been implementing one or two already because I discovered that I'm not thrilled with where I seem to be headed, style-wise when I do ink and watercolor particularly. My son insists that they are "great," and while I agree that they are nice enough, it's not the look/feel/tone I'm going for. So off I go to find some tutorials or some such to create work that's more "sketchy" and less "cartoony"! I've been enjoying all of your videos. Very helpful. Thanks!
You are very welcome :-) Unfortunately ink can look cartoony. Dip pens are better than liner pens in that respect because you get a much more painterly, sensitive line and can add water as you go. I may do a tutorial on that soon... *idea...
I find that when it comes to loved ones ~ they make horrible critics lol But also we tend to be our own worse critic Miss Michelle is on point with needing a unbiased group. I hope to get my art area finished so that I can join these groups
Do you already approach your work in this way, or have you found some new ideas here?
You my dear, are one of my art instructors

Thank you for your thoughts Michele, they’re so useful.
Michelle, I have started to make my own ink and watercolour paint and it’s sooo rewarding when your man tells you that this paint is the most beautiful pigment that I have worked with watercolour painting. I have tried many different pigments, without telling me your proportions and ingredients, which companies are your favorite.
Great, I am fond of Talens, Winsor and Newton, Daniel Smith and Jackmans Art Materials UK who I work with :-)
@@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber i juste ordered from Jackson, 6 arches pad…. Do you use smith to create your watercolour paint? )
@@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber by the way, do you have a videos about calligraphy and using ink to create watercolour painting?
Always grow a little you are a great teacher....
So nice of you
Dear Ms Webber, in many ways this is the most valuable video that you have produced and I must humbly thank you for it..
Happy to help! Hello Ontario :-)
Thanks Deidre, we are on the same page (art joke) :-)
In the Studio with Michele Webber 😂
I've been using colored pencils, watercolor pencils, and watercolor paints for eons, always finding new inspiration and understanding with each TH-cam video and course I take. I very much appreciate your expertise and enthusiasm (particularly: practice and don't give up!).
You are so welcome!
The Facebook group is absolutely a supportive group! I’m getting a lot of tips and constructive advice, Great video Michelle, very good advice, now I just have to take it onboard!
Yes! Thank you!
Thanks Colleen I appreciate that ☺️
Super helpful! Thank you!
This is super helpful Michelle. Thank you 🙏❤️ from 🇨🇦
Thank you Michele, an excellent video, it has made me think and the advice is very constructive
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you Michele for you wise and very thoughtful advice. I find you so easy to listen to and understand. I am looking forward to putting your tips into practice as I continue following my dream.
Wonderful!
very nice points you have advised.
Thanks
can you guide to how to draw different trees with leaves working in graphite pencil for basic practice .
This video definitely hits home. I don't like to draw, because I have convinced myself that I can't draw. I definitely need to heed your advice and start
deliberate practice immediately. Thank you very much for making this video!!
You are very welcome Harriet ☺️
Thanks for the great pointers. As a new watercolour artists, starting in COVID times, I’ve had to rely completely on online tutoring. Yourself included! I’m encouraged to hear about challenging myself to learn what I’m most hesitant to try. I appreciate your work Michelle. Keep well.
Thank you!
An excellent video. It really helps to analyse and face fears to improve. If you want it bad enough, you will overcome obstacles to make deliberate effort/ practice to improve. 😊
Absolutely!
In your other video that you made on how you became a professional artist I just wanted to say that you should also be both a motivational speaker as well as a life coach. I feel that you would be good at both of these jobs.
Thank you so much 😀
I am starting again at age 70....and I am finding this advice very helpful.
You are very young still :-) Good luck with your art journey!
This is one of the most helpful and useful videos. ❤❤
Glad it was helpful!
Seeing resistance as a pathway is a breakthrough for me! Thank you!
Another useful video! Thank you!
You're very welcome!
Delightfully challenging
Here after your recommendation on today’s video!😊
Yay! Thank you!
Thank you !!!
This is absolutely wonderful! I have been practising deliberate practice (yes sorry I got that too late😂) for as long as l’ve been painting. College was good at introducing this kind of self dialogue, but it’s not the only path to being an artist...deliberate practice is the path of growth. Wonderful!
I am glad you had a good experience at college, I am very bad at formal education. Thanks so much for watching the videos!
Brilliant! Thank you!
I am taking your beginner watercolor class. I will definitely use this technique for my practice.
Wonderful! Good luck Cathy :-)
Great ideas for improvement.
Thanks!
Criticism isn't an insult. It's a gift. Just be open to it.
Lots of good advice, thank you. I may have to rewatch this from time to time :-)
Glad it was helpful!
I think I need a few more examples, Michele. I think I can get what you mean, but I need to be sure
Tfs
Good luck Kathy!
@@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber Thank you
Glad I’ve found you. I’ve painted for many years but never really nailed it. But I’m focusing now and want to exhibit and sell, but I need to up my standard, so really looking forward to learning more from you4 channel. I love water colour, especially layering system of painting. Subbed. Thanks for you4 vids
Thanks so much for subscribing, really glad you found the videos helpful 🙂
Excellent again 👍
Thanks for your insights i do hope i will get the courage to practice daily.
I hope so too!
I love your videos. I have all of the shortcomings and am making the same mistakes you are discussing. Thank you.
You are so welcome!
Thank you , I found this very helpful .
That's really helpful, Michelle, and thank you very much. I made a list of the ten things, but realised that I had to put something in before anything else. This is what I wrote at the top of the list :
'Your environment for any activity is important. Set up an art 'area' where you can leave your work out, and are able to return to it easily.'
Seems obvious, but I was working out of a cardboard box, and just going to an art class once a week, so I decided to allocate a corner of a room for my Art work!
Absolutely!
Excellent! 👌👍
Many thanks!
Thank you. Such excellent tips encapsulated in this video.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Oh hard must listen again!
Thank you.
Thanks Evelyne, glad you liked it!
I am trying to be as skilled as I can get and attending your channel is my classroom and I am understanding water color s much better. I have always liked them but wasn't very good at using them.
Best of luck!
I have looked through the playlist hoping that you have done something about the differences between watercolor and acyrilic paints. People have gifted me with beautiful sets of acrylics but I really don't know how to use them and they are not watercolor.
@@janetsuiter1267 I don't have anything yet but may do in future. May I recommend Marion Dutton I think her channel is something like Maz Art
@@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber 💌Thank you for answering and I will try to find the tutor you have suggested. But I will still be with you. Watercolors are so interesting and you really are a good teacher.
@@janetsuiter1267 thank you, I am planning to do some acrylics videos in due course!
Michele great video inspiring and appropriate your skills
Thanks for watching Philip!
Second I have watched very helpful. Thank you from New Zealand Anne
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for this great video, I am practicing deliberately. Your points echo with my personal experience. The problem of not having someone to critic my work slow down my progress. I am just tired of people gave all the flattering. Any advice ?
Hi Raymond, I think asking people to comment on specific aspects of a painting helps, and reassuring them that you are happy to accept criticism 🙂
Glad I found y😄u! Thanks a lot

Thank you. You've hit the nail on the head for me. Prevarication is my middle name!
Ah, glad you found it useful ☺️
Thank you very much for making this video. All of the advice hits home for me. I am going to force myself into deliberate practice.
.Michelle, thank you for your humble heart. I felt I got it know you when you did the talk testimonial of yourself. Thank you for being transparent a d vulnerable and precious ❣️
I have had very serious thyroid issues - hope I'm better. Trouble was when I was terrible - I did t know it!!! I would love to join your facebook - last time I tried I was offered to find 5 friends - out of the hi dress it seemed - I knew oneOL (1). HA HA HA

No problem! Thanks so much!
Another wonderfully informative video. Thank you so much, I've learned a great deal. I view your videos almost every day over & over so the information sinks in. You are now my best art instructor. Deliberate practice is focused, targeted & the best way to move ahead in your art. Thanks again!
Wow! Thanks so much, Patti! I'm blushing! Glad you find my content useful.
@@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber Would love to see more videos about color, theory, mixing as I work in soft pastels.
Jacky
Hmm, I where to start. I would say, flat washes, blended edges (fade to white) and understanding the different types of pigments.
@@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber Feel I have made a reasonable start with 1st and 2nd suggestion but not 3rd - do you have a video on subject to help
Jacky
Really enjoyed this video great info and right on point so glad I found your channel, honest advice and help.
I'm glad you found me too :-) Thank you for watching!
Good advice. Thank you.
You're welcome!
*idea...
I find that when it comes to loved ones ~ they make horrible critics lol
But also we tend to be our own worse critic
Miss Michelle is on point with needing a unbiased group. I hope to get my art area finished so that I can join these groups
Good talk!
Thank you!
Really helpful, thank you.
You're welcome!
Seems like some of these same practices are the same I find in my alcohol recovery program and it all works if you work it !
Oh interesting!
