I moved to Georgia in1996. My sister lived in a house on ward off of tireman. It's. Sad to see how far gone the city is. I love your videos. I lived on Electric off of visger between Schafer and Outer Dr. My last trip home brought tears to my eyes as I drove through my old neighborhood.

I was born in Detroit (Grace Hospital) lived off Tireman I think. My whole family lived on the west side area.
My grandma and grandpa died there. They immigrated here from Wisconsin and Italy.

move to the suburbs just before the riots. Lk Orion. On a lake. Funny my job takes me into Detroit every week. I often think Of those good times there. 😢
I am very impressed with this video. The later "yellow brick" neighborhoods, in particular all seem very well-kept and inviting. Some of those big ranch "rambler" homes are awesome, especially along Oakman.
It is Robert OAKMAN, Oakman Blvd. Where this video began at Grand River and Plymouth Rd. He was the developer of the stores 1 block east of the green building that was once a Cummingham Drug Store. Grew up there.

This is the Robert Oakman Aviation Subdivision because I live here on the Detroit side... The airstrips of Esper and Littlefield was used by the Army in the early 1900's...This was originally swamp land in the late 1800's and is a documented flood zone...This was originally Greenfield Township and the Dearborn side was Springwells... The oldest houses were built in 1927 and the newest were built in 1971... Joseph Littlefield was a Detroit councilman and Esper was a family who owned a farm in the area... I have the original blueprints, courtesy of the Detroit Main Public Library...Henry Ford's historic housing district is in West Dearborn south of Michigan Avenue and bounded by Military to Outer Drive, Monroe to Michigan > called Historic Ford ... The houses were built for workers in his tractor factory in the 1920's...Oh, and you drove past my house in this video...

Excellent videos, Just watched the archive video of this video, including two of the grade schools I went to in the 1940s.. You drove many of the side streets that I drove before 1961. Now live in Maryland.
Never knew how beautiful the Avation area existed. Beautiful homes, a real contrast, indeed.

Always used to go there when I was 10 years old Graduated at Sampson from 2012-2015 lived on Allendale and Oregon Street in 2012 always would go to the park always would go on Larchmont street when I was told not to when I was a kid in them years, TGT MVHN DaMob we used to get jumped by them gangs when I was a kid them days. Damn I ain't never thought that Vic's was going to close down up until now.

OOps Chris you are wrong stating that Ford started in Dearborn rather than Detroit. WRONG. Ford started in Detroit and the Piquette historical factory is still there as is the shell of the old Highland Park plant. Only later did Ford move manufacturing to Dearbong.
The uaw has been trying to get into the foreign car plants since they were first built. Every single one they tried to organize, multiple times, each time it was a NO vote. What does that say.
The uaw has also been trying to crush every American industry since the day it was formed
I agree but I would counter that they come close to UAW pay and benefits. Probably the same amount considering they don't have to pay dues. With that being said the UAW is likely responsible for the standard compensation.
Compare UAW jobs to non-UAW jobs at supplier plants. And ya, if the UAW wasn’t a threat VW, Toyota, Mercedes etc would likely pay much much less.

I am curious what the difference is in home prices on the Detroit side and the Dearborn side of the Aviation neighborhood.
Just looked it up. Probably could’ve included that if I thought of it. Looks like the difference in price is anywhere from $200-$300k. 😂

Hiring quotas in Detroit were a large factor in auto manufacturers moving to burbs.
I know I’d be confused by some of those turns in that aviation subdivision.

It is very easy and simplistic to point out the failings and efforts of the UAW, however, it should also be noted that executives from Ford, GM and Chrysler also agreed to and signed the contracts in order to return the workers to the production line. Additionally, the failings of the big 3 was that engineers no longer ran the companies but rather accountants and MBA’s. Cost cutting became the driver of the business. In the 1970’s and 1980’s GM vehicles were low quality, cookie cutters. For example the Nova, Omega, Apollo and Ventura were difficult to differentiate to the casual observer. Let’s not forget the Pontiac Aztec, often voted the ugliest car. Foreign car manufacturers established factories in the U.S. to beat tariffs and produced higher quality vehicles. It is true that at one time some Chrysler employees were getting paid to sit in the union halls and playing cards, not building vehicles. Again, executives from Chrysler agreed to the union requests in order to produce cars. The big 3 failed to see the impact on foreign cars to their market share.

"Aviation Subdivision" is just west of Wyoming from my street. Everybody I know in my my neighborhood refers to it as"the good-side of Wyoming"!! A lot of the streets over there run DIAGONAL to the other streets because of their air-strip origins!! 😮the name"Morrow"manifests on striking"Morrow Circle"street!! 😮 "White Flight" started in 1945 when Blacks returning from Normandy and Iwo Jima chose to live other than in the Hastings Street and Black Bottom areas,which caused whites to move out of Detroit rather than live on the same street with a Black family. 1945 had Detroit with over 2 million residents,but by the time the 1950 National Census was taken,the population FELL to 1,849,568 residents!! 😮

Why are do many housed covered in weeds as tall as the house. Do they want it to look like the jungle?
Two things noticeable in most of these Detroit neighborhoods. Large gaps between houses and businesses where meadows are reforming. The second and most telling thing noticed is the zero new construction going on in these areas. They are not going to part of the "new Detroit" and it's obvious why.....you never invest money into known losing propositions. Economics 101.
Wanna see first hand what it used to be like to work in a big 3/uaw plant? Read A Savage Factory by Robert Dewar. Its a 1st hand account from a ford line foreman. Its a REAL jaw dropper.

The '67 riots killed Detroit-----It will never be the same :( :( July 23,1967 was the beginning and THE END.
White Flight is a silly term. 1st 2 families who moved off our block had dad's who worked in medical field amd they left for better paying jobs. 1 to Oklahoma and the other to California. After that where 2 elderly couples. 1 couple went to Florida, the other 1 of them dies and the other went to live with their adult kid in NC. We moved due to a death in the family, but crime was getting worse too. 1 family from still lives one that block that was there from when I was young. The family that stayed the 2nd longest from my tim f7nally left in the 90s. The elderly wife was grocery shopping and there was a shoot out in the store. They loved their house, but j7st weren't safe. Not only White people left during this time, but so did many Black people. The city of Southfield grew as many Black people from Detroit moved there. Alll of my friends who were Black had their families move out of the city to the suburbs during the mid 70s. Except 1 family who left the state. Has jobs left, so did people. Has crime got worse people left. I think has current citizens left those who moved in tended to be Black. However there were also Korean and Middle Eastern people moving in. A Korean family bought our place, the dad was an engineer. We kept in touch with neighbors. I found out from the few old neighbors or mine still there that Korean family that bought our place moved to the suburbs 5 years later. To be closer to the dad's new jobs and due to crime. It went from a neighbors where kids could play outside till the streetlights came on to young people getting shot at. A nice preteen Black guy I knew invited me and a friend to a party. Her parents were stricked and wouldn't let her go, I didn't want to go alone so I didn't go. He got shot and killed at that party. People tend to try try to flee from where they aren't safe. The family I know that still lives there is White. The tern White Flight is cop-out terminology.
I'm so surprised that driving through the hood like that no one has stopped you. I lived on Tireman and Colfax. I'm shocked. I got stopped with my baby in the car repeatedly asking if I "needed something", "where my man" was at, and "get on your knees with your hands up" by our lovely police. Just shocked.

Alot of automakers discriminated against blacks in thr early days and wouldnt hire them. Ford hired them all but gave them the hardest jobs cuz white workers were more likely to quit. He also used them to fend off the uaw which had a racist rank and file at the time. He knew they were less likely to trust the union than a white worker so by hiring more blacks he was able to keep the union out. It worked for a while cuz ford was the last to unionize, in 1941.

Coleman segregated the city from the suburbs, times have changed big time since the 1970s. Many other cities have flourished since then , poor city management and progressive policies have destroyed this once fine city.
