Hi Marie, thanks for another very useful video. It seems that you used just one layer of each glaze? I'm thinking this is more economical than brushing on 2 or 3 coats. What do you think?
Yes, I think you may save a little more glaze. But pouring saves me much more time and the finish is always smooth. Especially the inside of the pottery. I also brush glaze but it depends on the finish I want to create. 😊
Nice video!! It was so helpful for me and thank you so much:) I have one question, that I saw the amaco pc glazes are brush recommended glaze, but Is it okay pouring the glaze as you did on video?
Wow! Thanks a lot!!! Soooo beautiful and helpful!!! when do you brush the glaze on and when do you dip it and when do you pour it? What differences does that make?
Thank you that's good question. I brush when I want different effects. At the end of all these I show Brush and pour glazing th-cam.com/play/PLN-I0Hl1lbyybD8mJTtutoMbzR8uUB5Nd.html 😊
Thank you Kathy. Yes very good question. Because cone 5 with a hold is equal to cone 6 except it helps the glaze cure better. That is what the techs at Skutt told me and it has worked very well for me. 😊

I’m wondering why you didn’t glaze the base of the bowls? It seems like they would be more difficult to keep clean with unglazed bases. I’m really enjoying your color combinations.
Hi Cindy. That's a very good question. I was testing the glazes but didn't want to use test tiles for the video. It was the first time I had used these flux glazes with other glazes and wasn't sure how much they would flow. 😊
Thank you for your informative videos! One question… I’m assuming that these are all food safe glazes, will they remain food safe when you layer them or do you need to test them?
Amaco told me that there is no way they can test all the combinations so that are not allowed to say the glaze combos are food safe. Here is a test kit if unsure geni.us/nLrt 😊
Thank you . Yes, you are right I did over glaze on one of them. It sure was fun testing these glazes. I do love the results of the other glazes I tested. 😊
Hi Marie..I have a doubt..I had tried duncan envision low fire glaze on terracotta and it works. On Stoneware, we usually use a mid fire or a high fire glaze..if I'm using the same low fire glaze (cone 04 - 06)on stoneware clay body will it affect it's vitrification or strength ? Or am I supposed to use only a high fire glaze on a stoneware body(cone 6)?
That is a good question. If you use mid and high-fire clay and with low-fire glaze, yes, you are right. The clay will be porus like earthenware. Which is fine if you use a food-safe low-fire glaze. The only problem you may run into is the clay and glaze may not expand and contract together in the kiln, and you could get crazing. It is best to use mid to high-fire clay with mid-fire glaze and fire to cone 5 or 6. hope this helps 😊
I think this will help th-cam.com/video/A-K-iJGRQM0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=DNfBkKNqtkiF-udC This article also potterycrafters.com/prevent-pottery-clay-from-cracking-while-drying/ Hope this helps 😊
Bonne question. Oui, assurez-vous simplement d’appliquer le vernis suffisamment épais. Aussi épais qu'un t-shirt. Changez la direction de la brosse pour éviter les traces. 😊 Good question. Yes, just make sure you apply the glaze thick enough. As thick as a t-shirt. Switch the brush direction to prevent streak marks. 😊
I noticed that some things had an unglazed foot in the finished product and others (like the first mixing bowls) seem to have glaze that goes uniformly all the way down to the table with little to no lip. With the way these glazes run, how do you do that? It seems like you NEED a hefty lip on some and on others you don’t have one at all. Thanks!
It's always good to ask if you're confessed. No It's just the flux glazes in combination with other Amaco glazes. I showed the bottles before each glaze combination. I hope this helps. 😊
That is a good question. Your glaze will have to be the consistency of heavy cream. If you are pouring inside a bowl or mug, you can't let it sit too long. I pour the glaze out right away and try to pour it as evenly as I can. I have personally had great success with pouring and no crawling. It is important to make sure your bisqueware is clean. Also, how porous your bisque ware is. The more porous, the more the glaze will absorb into your piece and the glaze's ability to hang on to the clay. I hope this helps. 😊
Would you be able to share a firing schedule for firing to cone 6 with a manual kiln (has kiln sitter and dials that show 1-10/ low med high)? Is it the same as bisque? (I usually do 2 hrs on low; 2 hours on med; remaining time on high until temp is reached but not sure if this would work for glaze too) Should I being doing a hold at top temp? Thank you!!
Hi Taylor. My friend has a kiln sitter and this is what she does for a glaze firing to cone 6. Place the small cone 6 wittiness cone in the sitter and regular cone 6 one in the kiln. Leave top peephole plug out, and the lid should be propped open with a firebrick about an inch or two. Leave on low for 3 to 4 hours. Close lid. Turn all switches to medium, leave at medium for 3 to 4 hours. Turn all switches to high until the kiln sitter cone shuts down the kiln. She said she does not do a hold

@@PotteryCrafters Sorry one more question! Does your friend do a slow cool? Or what is her cooling process? I was seeing some videos about how the cooling process can also affect your glaze results.
Every potter I know was nervous their first. I didn't fire my kiln for 3 months after I got it. Wishing you the best. She said no, she just put the top peep in and let it cool naturally 😊
Hi Marie..i use a glaze which is recommended to be fired at cone 06..in the pottery studio, they allow only cone 04. Do you think i should try the cone 04 glaze firing instead of cone 06? Will it affect my results?
That is an important question. You can't because low fire glazes (cone 06) are different from High fire glazes like the ones I used on this video (cone 5-6) They need a higher temperature to cure. You can only fire your glazes to cone 06 any higher and you risk the glaze flowing off the pot. If you want them to flow like the glazes I used you have to look for low fire glazes that say things like flow or float. 😊
That is a good question. It will depend on the glaze you use because of the flux (melting agent) that is used in the glazes. Some low-fire glazes can be fired to cone 04, and some only to cone 06. It is best to look at the labels. You can also do test fires with a cookie underneath.
@@PotteryCrafters when I looked at labels it said cone 06. But in the studio they allow only cone 04. So was doubtful for going 65°C higher than recommended.
That is smart. I would recommend test-firing a piece with a cookie underneath. If it runs too much or doesn't turn out, you know you can't use that glaze. I would then look for a glaze that says cone 06 to 04. I mainly use mid-fire glazes. So, I will contact a few of my potter friends who use low-fire glazes and get back to you as soon as I hear from them. 😊
Great question. Yes The Amaco glazes are more forgiving and I can add up to one eighth cup of distilled or purified water to my pint of glaze. You can do tap water but never want to take the chance with glazes. I use tap with clays but not glaze or underglazes. 😊
Thanks!
