    Omg! The same thing happened to me and a friend at the Perm State Ballet School, they told us to cut some weight, we did and they told us that we looked bad (awfully skinny) 😵‍💫

    Very interesting to hear how body shapes factor into ballet. How certain shapes make moves more challenging or easier. I love your commentary because you are so matter of fact with no judgment and a perfect mix of praise and gentle critique.

    Different muscle types respond differently, everyone has a combination of long-twitch and short-twitch muscles. Someone with hyper flexibility and really stretched muscles is not going to have the same “pop” as someone with more muscle density and less flexibility. Unfortunately, except in very rare cases, a super flexible, tall dancer is not going to have as good a jump as a shorter more muscled dancer. If you watch the really good jumpers, you can see they are utilizing a deeper plié, which is loading their feet, ankles and knees, which all then straighten and extend pushing hard off the floor. It’s the difference between dropping a ball toward the floor and throwing a ball against the floor. You’ve got to go down in order to go up.

    It would be helpful to point out where you are in the group, because i couldn't for the life of me figure it out. At a distance everyone looks the same. Were you in the first group or second? I couldn't even tell that from things you said

    • @roxiehart1
      @roxiehart1 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I was wondering the same. It's not as fun to watch not knowing which dancer she is.

    You always look very tense during the exams (when not dancing, of course). Can you elaborate a bit more about your mental state for the exams?

    • @balletwithisabella
      @balletwithisabella  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      This made me laugh haha! I look tense because it's a very tense exam! Lot's of pressure, one chance to achieve what we have been working towards, we all want to do our best and not make mistakes. I tried to think of myself as an athlete, keep focused and do the job! stay strong. I'll do a video on my exact mental feelings sometime.

    As a little girl, I started ballet, but was told there was no point in me doing ballet, because I would grow to be too tall. I ended up 5ft 11, only one inch taller than you, - but times change. Royal ballet looks sloppy after watching Vaganova.

    Boris Yakovlevich Bregvadze was a great man! Tough but fair:) he was my master at University of Culture and Art , we learned classical repertoire. He called me a weak cow😂also he had a nickname for each student

    Were it exausting these exams? How were your regular diet in Vaganova? What did you do to loose weight?

    • @balletwithisabella

      Very exhausting and sure I'll do a video sometime. I never starved myself, I ate like a horse but ate very healthily.

    May I know why the classroom has an uphill level? Isn’t that really hard to dance on, or did the academy did that on purpose?

    • @russianballet681
      @russianballet681 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Because the Mariinsky's stage has a slope. As some other theaters do . Yes, it is hard to dance on

    • @Are_We_Having_Tea
      @Are_We_Having_Tea 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Most older European theaters are raked. Higher in the back, lower towards the audience. Whereas the the floor where the audience sits is flat. So the opposite of modern theater design. It makes it easier for the audience to see all of the stage action. So older dance studios raked at least one studio floor so the dancers could get used to it.

    Eff the vaganova teachers (and other ballet teachers) that degrade their students and call them names. That's not a teaching method.

    • @bw3747
      @bw3747 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      That is such a 'Western way of thinking.

    • @laurendillon627
      @laurendillon627 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      You work harder because you don’t want your teacher to degrade you. Is it “nice”? No. But you then work harder to prove you aren’t stupid. Its harsh but so is classical ballet. I was told “if your teacher doesn’t give you a million corrections, call you out for mistakes, or even tell you that you look ugly doing that move it means they didn’t notice you at all.” This kind of harshness teaches children early on to accept corrections, apply them, and not take the rude parts to heart. A teacher will be on your case because they see the potential in you and want to help you tap into it. Besides, most ballet teachers won’t smack you with a cane on the arms/legs/feet/back like they used to. There is a difference between abuse and negative motivation. Being told you are perfect and brilliant and amazing only hurts you in the end. Because you stop working as hard. Everyone needs to have one strict, old, Russian ballet teacher as a student. You learn real fast what standards are and what respect is

      Скорее не унижение, а требовательность, я понимаю что в английском языке мало слов и того же слова "справедливость" нет вообще. И за 20 век с Англии более-менее солидная это Марго Фонтейн, и все. Потому что англичане ленивые и эгоистичные, поэтому и нет никого. Лёжа на диване не станешь балериной ).
