Driving in Fog
As the weather begins to change, we need to be prepared for foggy road conditions. Driving in heavy fog is like driving with a blindfold on. Fog creates a deadly driving hazard - combining wet, slippery pavement with reduced visibility.
If driving conditions are particularly bad, postpone your trip until the fog lifts. If you are already driving when you encounter fog, follow these safety procedures:
• Use your low-beam/fog lights so that you can see and be seen. Do not use high-beam headlights as they reflect back to the driver, reducing visibility. Never drive with your hazard lights on.
• Reduce your driving speed so that you can stop safely within the distance you can see. Keep in mind that the road surface may be wet, which will increase the distance needed to stop.
• Use your windshield wipers and defroster to keep the windshield clear.
• Increase your normal following distance to ensure a safe distance from the vehicle ahead of you.
• Watch for vehicles ahead of you, so you can respond safely if you see the brake lights come on.
• Listen for traffic you cannot see, and open your window as much as possible to hear better.
• Stay in your lane and avoid passing other vehicles, making sure you signal your intentions well in advance if you need to change lanes or make a turn.
• Pull off the road as far away from traffic as possible if visibility becomes extremely poor. Turn off your headlights, take your foot off the brake pedal, and turn on your hazard lights. Wait until conditions improve before starting to drive again.
