This is an excellent example of the intelligent application of city planning. I wish more cities would consider this.

Meh. More like hey lets just put some ditches next to roads and make moss grow everywhere. Not inovative, and no science that proves it helps temperature. Also this wont work in many other places like england, cause a lot of rainfall will cause flooding easily in those ditches.. Not the best of ideas to have no way to get water out of that part of the city.

@HicaptainWorld As an urban planner student researching this subject, I can tell you that a lot of modeling and research goes into the form and placement of ditches and other local drainage solutions, and it's proven to work in Copenhagen, which has much as the same climate as England. There is plenty of research done that have shown that trees and other plants cools down a city a lot. The plants are there exactly to get flooded, so the rest of the city doesn't suffer
I'm a high rise window cleaner and we love cleaning buildings that have vegetation growing on their roofs. It's so much cooler up there.
There are way to many black rubber or asphalt roofs. They are hot as hell!
But many building management companies are switching to the white roofs which are better but blind your eyes if you don't wear glasses up there.
note to self: if i go on-top of a roof, bring sunglasses, esp if the roof is white

@@biohazardlnfS actually no. rubber roofs are much more seceptible to extreme weather, and a cooler city helps to reduce the likelyhood of extreme weather occurances.
When there is a lot of energy in the air, a heated parkinglot or city can be enough to trigger an extraordinarily heavy rainfall. Due to this being less likely with a city concept like this, I'd argue that the maintenance costs are actually lower.

One of the GREENEST cities in Europe, it's absolutely incredible and the air quality is just amazing , especially compared to Paris or New York. Can't be berlin, cheap food, cheap real estate.

What do mean that it's legal?
Anyhow, engineering has always been the most probable way of doing it. It's just that you need some sort of enforcement when it comes to industry becsause often being more environmentally friendly is expensive and puts you in a disadvantage against your competitors, so sometimes the government will place an industry standard so no company is more disadvantage than any other and yet environmental goals are still met.
I am still hoping for something akin to fusion or the wider adoption of thorium reactors. Placing solar panels in the deserts of the works would also be fantastic. Particularly in the Middle East, Africa, South Western U.S. and Australia.
Touchy feely tree-hugging has it's place too, we need engineers to create innovative green spaces, we need hippies to keep them tended year after year for free.
If by "touchy feely tree-hugging type environmental attitude" you mean not understanding that city trees need maintenance and won't die or suffer from cutting a few branches, I agree. It's not a right or left wing politics thing, more like whether or not people use the logical part of their brain. Anyways, I think the solution is for cities to be built underground and for the surface to remain wild. Nature is beautiful and amazing, so humans should work with it instead of pave it over in arrogance or ignorance.

I visited Berlin last year. I found the surprisingly green and it didn’t feel like a big city, more like a lot of connected villages. I really liked the city and I will visit again

I never heard of this concept but I think it is a great idea. Most cities I've been to in Germany are trying to incoporate more green into the city. I thought it was for air quality but I did not think about that. It's a great idea.
But scrolling through the comments, I can only shake my head. First of all, how do you get from an enviornmental video to refugees, and secondly have any of you been to Germany? I study in a larger city but I live out in the countryside. Yes, you can sometimes see more non-ethnical northern Europeans in the cities since the refugee crisis BUT it is not the way you guys are trying to paint it. The majority of people is still German or at least looks like the stereotypical northern European person. I also do not feel less save in the evening than before. I don't deny the reports that some refugees cannot or do not want to integrate themselves but only a tiny fraction of them are potentially harmful. The rest of them are people like you and I. And show me one country or society without jerks and idiots who left their brain behind in their mother's womb?

As a German studying, working and living in a green city, I can confirm 100%. (Especially West) German cities are already melting pots for different nationalities. I live next door to Taiwanese, Indians, Turks and Koreans and we all get along great. I couldn't even tell who is a refugee in my daily life, everyone's just a normal customer to me (at the store I'm working) and I still go out safely at night. They're mostly just normal people. It's not at all like some Sodom and Gomorrah like raping pit like some (strangely often americans) suggest. We're just fine thanks. lol
Totally agree with you. Yes, I noticed I see more people of different nationalities in Hanover than in Magdeburg for example. I mean I grew up near Wolfsburg and our region has many people who descend from Italy and Turkey because of the economic wonder in the 50s and 60s. There are also a lot of Russians. Two of my friends descend from an Italian family and from a Russian. If you would see them on the streets you would not even know they are not German.
I also read reports that refugees were flooding the universities. Well, I have not seen one. I study English so I guessed there would be at least one person but not that I noticed. Also there are just the usual exchange students but they come mostly from European countries.
For me, nothing changed, except you may see a tiny bit more people of arabian descendance but I could not really tell them apart form the ones of Turkish descend whose parents might have already been born here.
The only thing that I noticed a teacher in training is that the classes for integration need way more teachers and better material. They do their best and my university actually worked (and I think still works) with a school to help them. Some students even do their internship in these classes. But we can only do so much as we are still in training and most internships only last 4 to 5 weeks or once or twice a week for a semester. Many of these kids went through hell and they deserve a chance of a normal life and a good education as long as they are here (many I talked to wish to go home again when it is save)

Crawley in west Sussex, England was built post war and I'm quite impressed how green they have left the built up environment separating roads from streams with scrub woodland and floodplains that are allowed to flood.

The Canadian prairies used to have sod houses over a century ago. Some aspects of sod houses will be making a comeback on a few buildings in Edmonton, Alberta as roof systems on an office building and a renovated warehouse. There are a few houses with flat sod roofs.

In many italian town old roads are still kept because their outer layer is actually made of stones or san pietrini (levigated and squared ones) because concrete won't help with the heavy rains that sometimes occur. As the gaps between them let water be absorbed by the ground.
Also, are less expensive to mantain as rock is way more resistant and doesn't break in winter like tar, and citizens are safer as they hear incoming vehicles from the corner.

Some of this already happens in Scotland. Rainwater and surface runnoff is treated on site before being released into the environment. Stormwater is collected in crates under the surface which then regulates its release into the treatment system. There is a safety overflow though into conventional sewers to take water away if it cannot be treated or stored. It's known as SUDS - "Sustainable Urban Drainage System"

Concrete actually acts like a sponge already (because of cement), so if you have much vapor around for long you will get mildew build up easier on the inside especially with the new type of plastic insulating windows. Also where the sponge-earth meets the concrete eventually there will be water damage in those areas.

I like the idea, however if you keep the rain at the ground level, wont you create a HUMID environment? Seeing that is an urban environment
even if that's a problem (humid & heat is uncomfortable), humidity have a useful ability to neutralise pollution & pathogen in the air. Research have shown that rats with flu didn't contract/transmit virus well in humid air, and micro-particulate from combustion will clump together in humid air into a bigger particulate that is less harmful to our lung. Plants in the area will emit volatile organic compound and shed organic particles into the air as well... in a tropical forest this has been shown to produce local cloud and rain in the vicinity. Shed organic particles, like plant virus, might also excite our immune system without actually being a pathogenic or infectious, and the plant's leaf itself is good at rejecting infrared heat from the sun away from the ground. With roof made of plants, it is insulated from the heat and according to a study; doing this (is an alternative to painting roof white) will reduce 80% of your AC bills.
xponen have you ever been in a rain forest ? Humidity is painful, it can induce a heat stroke in people not accustomed to it... The roof top growth is fine, however if the ground gets too dense, then problems will occur

But Berlin is not on a tropical place, the summer temperatures don't rise to the extremely high values of a rainforest, with August temperatures on an average of 19ºC, it's average summer rainfall is also nowhere near the rainforest values, so even if they filled the city with plants you wouldn't have the unpleasant combination of heat+humidity that you have on a tropical place.

This is a good idea, they can also put down some storm drains, that only operate when there is flooding, just in case. Those drains can be easily automated using a pipe and a flowmeter. The flowmeter measures the volumetric flowspeed of the rain through the pipe, and activate the drains if that speed is above a certain level, for a set amount of time. This can be done using only analog systems, and shouldn't even need electricity to work.
Or an even cheaper solution can be special street drains, that have a plug below them, and that plug can be held in place using a spring. If the water pressure above the drain gets above a certain level, the spring wouldn't be able to hold the plug in place, and the drain will get activated until the pressure falls below a certain level. This would be a very cheap "emergency flood release" system.
I hope China can copy this example. I think California may take this example.

The city also can reduce their budged for cleaning to some extend since it doesn't have to scrape that much dirt & dust of the streets / buildings.
Maybe there is potential to make money, maybe not.

It does flood sometimes (in part because Berlins sewer system is somewhat outdated). But adding more soil and plants instead of concrete actually helps quite a lot with floods, because they absorb a lot of water.

This would have been really helpful for Houston. Have read that new Houston development, particularly post-recession, has not put much thought into retaining water in the city, but rather moving it away through pipes, dams, and even the highway. This inevitably breaks down in heavy rains, like we are seeing for Hurricane Harvey.
The water that evaporates during warm temperatures causes increased humidity. So although the temperature may be lower by a degree or two the increased humidity, especially during hot days, will make it feel warmer than what it is.

I am curious on the scale of maintenance for the plant life. Naturally they have to keep their eco sponge from growing out of control so I wonder if the city created a new job system for this. Creating gardeners like you would create waste collectors to get rid of people’s garbage.

this is really cool. i've never lived in berlin, but i lived in the south with my grandparents before moving, and i remember the recycling laws being crazy. germans are crazy about the environment unlike the other two countries i have lived in. in israel people compost and that's really it and in america i see plastic wrappers and mud water on every corner, and cigarettes on the floor:

oh lord, this comment section... I am from Berlin and I am a young woman and I can tell you, there is no problem with refugees. I experienced things like sexual harassment from German citizens as well as from other nationalities. It has nothing to do with the nationality. Furthermore most of them are actually really nice and are willing to learn German and get a job to not be depending on the government. It's true that not everyone is like that but the same goes for German citizens. Equal amount of assholes. Like i said, it doesn't depend on the nationality. I felt most of the times respected from other cultures "even when" they were muslims.

This works on so many levels.
This keeps the cities cooler in general, which makes it more comfortable to go outdoors. It also makes the cities aesthetically more pleasing. This can encourage people to go outdoors more, which can help with public health.
A cooler city also means lower energy demand for air conditioning, thus lower energy demand in general, lowering the strain on the energy grid, very helpful to the transition to renewable power.
