But really, she's obviously grossly uninformed, but at least she's curious, so if that curiosity leads to her watching a documentary or something then that's a win, at least that's better than people who say "but why would you even want to explore the universe if 99% of the ocean is still unexplored?" and things like that

      @Mr Clock exactly, and the little something there is, isn't that useful to begin with, sure more species to put in the aquariums, but beyond that, not much, whereas space can have the solution for many of our problems, like energy consumption (with antimatter stuff, dyson spheres and things like that), lack of resources (if a planet supported us for so long, imagine two planets) just to name a few, so when people say "why explore space" it just shows how little they think about that stuff

      @@Psieye The problem with theories is that they have to be tried out to be proven. If there was a flaw in the theory and the end result was a black hole that didn't radiate but rather sucked stuff in, that would've been the end. If anything we dont know if black holes could be a portal to an infinitely different universe. Theres a popular theory suggesting that if you got sucked in faster than the speed of light and somehow managed to survive for an infinite amount of time and somehow got past the event horizon (yes a lot of conditions for this to work) you'd end up getting "shot" out of a "white" hole. A white hole is just a black hole but it spits things out faster than the speed of light. Now how this works I dont know jack shit about, but its a popular theory so

      Physicist here. Interesting ideas, all of them, but they are over-exagerations used to try add some meaning to "dificult" to grasp concepts. As far as all evidence, and our current understanding goes, a black hole is a superdense mass with such a high gravitational pull that it actually attracts, bend, and pulls light. Now, for a long time, light was used as a refference for a lot of measurements, because it was thought to be a constant. Now we know it """is not""" (please notice the triple quotation marks) light is simultaneously a constant, AND a variable, depending on diferent "observation" frameworks: if we measure it on our current fourdimensional space, it is a constant, and behaves as such. If, however we treat time as a separate frame, we notice light starts doing some very abnormal stuff. Now, when talking about black holes, if you use light to measure distances, sizes, speeds etc, like with every other celestial body, you start getting weird feedback, because light (and arguably time itself, when observed as a simple non relativistic frame) is/are getting simultaneously affected, and not-affected, leading to those "time extending to infinite for traveler, but for observer is static" paradoxes. Wormholes are a whole different thing, if any is interested i could try to explain

    So for those wondering about Black Holes, these are an amateur's thoughts on the video. Take what I say here with a grain of salt, I'm skipping some technical stuff to, I hope, give you a good visualization.
    0:10 "Apparently, if you enter a Black Hole you won't be able to get out."
    True, in fact, you'll reach the point of no return 'long' before you reach the Black Hole.
    Now this is often explained that the 'gravity is so great, even light cannot escape', but I always felt that didn't really explain why.
    So, mass distorts space(-time) and we call that distortion gravity. Black Holes are super massive things squeezed in a really small volume, so the distortion and thus gravity is about as extreme as it can get. So why can't you get out? Well imagine a dot with a small arrow sticking out in *every possible direction* and when that dot passes by a planet, every arrow is slightly bent towards that planet. Now imagine the Black Hole, the arrows don't bend slightly, but a lot. Really a lot. And as the dot gets closer and closer, at some point (this is the 'Event Horizon') every arrow, despite starting in a different direction, points deeper towards the Black Hole. There's *no physical direction* that you can take, that doesn't lead deeper into the Black Hole. That's why you can't get out.
    0:25 "A person going towards a black hole, may seem like he's going on forever."
    Also mostly true. We 'see' things because there's radiation coming from objects that hit our detectors. Easiest; light hits an object, gets reflected, and detected by our eyes. Or flames produce, among other things, light that hits our eyes. So to see a person going into a black hole something needs to hit the person and then get reflected towards us, or the person has to emit it's own 'something'. BUT as previously discussed, past the Event Horizon, nothing can escape. So we actually stop seeing the person. What we're seeing is an 'after image' caused by light that didn't directly reflect towards us, but first spend some time circling the Black Hole just outside the Event Horizon. The longer one waits, the less of that light exists and escapes towards us. So we'd observe that person falling towards the Black Hole untill at some point the person stops and slowly fades.
    0:43 "Why do Black Holes exist?"
    Stars 'burn' by fusing elements in their core into heavier elements. First hydrogen into helium and later those heavier elements in even heavier elements. Until iron, this element is essentially too stable to fuse through normal stellar means. But the difference in size of each element isn't that big, so the difference in 'weight' (i.e. *why* is it heavier) is because it's denser. So at the end of it's solar life a star has a much denser core that the pressure of the fusion radiation can no longer win against and the core collapses. This releases so much energy that the outer layers are blown away in an explosion several times the size of the solar system called a Supernova. A star that started with 10 times the mass of our sun (in fact, it's theorized only 3 times is needed) would go Supernova and end up a Black Hole with an Event Horizon of ~30 km in radius.
    0:48 "Has none entered in a Black Hole yet?"
    In 2020 the star system HR 6819 was reasoned to contain a Black Hole and the closest one to Earth. While the findings of that particular study are contested by 2 others, 1 that argues there's no Black Hole at all, assuming it does contain a Black Hole. It's about 1120 light years (10 596 020 000 000 000 km) from Earth. That means even at the speed of light it'd take 1120 years to get there. For comparison Voyager 1 (launched in 1977 and the furthest man made object from Earth) is a mere 22 843 564 287 km or 21 light _hours_ away from Earth. So no; noone has been to a Black Hole yet- they're too far away.
    0:53 "But are Black Holes really pitch dark?"
    Since nothing can escape the Event Horizon that surrounds a Black Hole and thus they themselves emit literally nothing even could be observed from the outside; yes they are pitch dark.
    0:56 "Those who enter a black hole, do they exist in the same realm as us?"
    Easy answer; yes but in the most extreme conditions possible in the universe. Difficult answer; like how my physics teacher said when I wondered aloud of matter is merely condensed energy "let's not yet go there for the next couple of years...".
    1:13 "Eh? But you can see a Black Hole..."
    Technically you can't. But we can infer it's existence and quite a lot of properties by how the universe around it behaves.
    1:18 "People get bent?"
    This is referred to as Spaghettification. Basically once you go past the Event Horizon the gravity becomes even more extreme, so extreme that the gravity you experience at your feet and head are so significantly different that you'd be stretched (also your left will be pushed to the right and your right will be pushed to the left) and destroy your body.
    1:37 "But how do you guys know that?"
    This is where the wonderful practice of inferrence (among others) comes in. You see, we've been using mathematics (advanced mathematics, but mathematics nonetheless) to describe the universe quite accurately. And because of that we can infer things from what we see. If you look at a lake and there are big circular ripples going from the center to the shore then someone probably dropped a fairly big rock in the middle, even if you didn't see it and can't find the rock while snorkling. So too did we use mathematics to predict the existence of Black Holes before we found them. And when we found a black hole, we couldn't see it, but we could see everything around it behaving as if there was a Black Hole around. If you want to do some work of your own search in your preferred search engine for images for "Milky Way Black Hole gif". Chances are at least one or two of them are about how we first discovered the Black Hole at the center of the Milky Way galaxy; by looking at other stars.
    1:48 "You have to experience it first-hand to know about it right?"
    Well, not first-hand. Else how do you know what you know about Black Holes Pekora? You saw it in a video so that's, at best, second-hand.
    But it's not entire untrue either. There's a lot we don't know exactly because we haven't been there. Mathematical models are nice in easy circumstances, but when it concerns Black Holes or the Big Bang, the conditions are so extreme that a lot of our maths breaks down.
    2:28 "I wonder if you can make a Black Hole?"
    In theory; totally. You just need to get something dense enough, compact something smaller than it's Schwarzschild radius. The 'easiest' way to do that is with particle accelerators. Years ago, people who didn't know what they were talking about, were afraid that CERNs LHC would produce Black Holes and destroy the Earth. Scientists who actually knew what they were talking about were like "It'd be pretty cool if we managed to create Black Holes." But instead of taking that as a sign that there would be no danger, morons took that to mean that apparently scientists crave death, want others to die, and worship satan.
    A lot of people imagine that Black Holes are these giant vacuum cleaners or other wise attract things and destroy everything, but the simple truth is that the attraction part comes from gravity, which is governed by mass. So if I had 2 electrons, smashed them together and created a Black Hole, I'd have a Black Hole with the massive attraction of... 2 electrons. Gravity wise, nothing would've changed. Plus, without going into details, due to the unique nature of Event Horizons Black Holes actually slowly evaporate anmd the smaller they are the quicker they evaporate. A Black Hole the mass of electrons would exist for such a short time that there's actually no shorter time possible!
    Still, even the LHC didn't make a Black Hole (as far as we can tell anyway). So practically; no you can't make a Black Hole.
    Note: You don't need to capitalize Black Hole or practically anything I capitalized. I just did that to make important terms more recognizable.
    All things considered, Pekora and chat got a lot right about Black Holes and the difference was mostly in details that even science journalists might skip. Though I do believe them to be important to know.

      @Psieye 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually no, they're not so dark because of Hawking Radiation. Light can't escape so any photons that come from a star and reach the black hole never gets out. But the black hole is itself a source of photons - virtual photon/anti-photon pairs spontaneously form and destruct in the vacuum. When this happens on the event horizon, one photon gets sucked into the black hole, its partner must become real and is on a trajectory outward. The energy cost to make that virtual photon real is 'paid' by the black hole.

    • @LiliaIxalia
      @LiliaIxalia 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When photons and anti-photons exist, anti-photons absorbed back to the blackhole while the virtual photon become real and escape from blackhole through hawking radiation.
      Since anti-photons carry negative energies, it will reduce blackhole mass gradually until the blackhole evaporate completely.
