Hi Guitarwizard, thanks for the feedback! I think your statement on this is a popular one! Appreciate the comment and really enjoyed your Apache cover by the way!
ok guys Metro Detroit has lots of Germans and Poles who are famous for their sausages and hot dogs. We still have 5-7 local butchers who make hot dogs according to Michigan standard set by legislature in the 1980s. Notice they remark hot dog has a pop, that is natural casing. Each coney place has their own brand of hot dog made according to their specifications. This aside from chili, mustard, etc accounts for different taste of each venue.
Born & raised in Detroit & moved to Knoxville, Tennessee ten years ago. American is where it's at!! To this day we order from American and have it shipped to us in Knoxville. American is the BOMB!!
Hi Paul, wow didn't realize you can have it shipped like that! Suddenly I feel like a lightbul has gone off in my head and I'm now thinking of all these far away places I want food from HAHA! Are you still doing the indoor golf thing? :-)
@@JennyAndAlex So you know, American ships 12 buns, 12 dogs, chili and a fresh onion packed in dry ice. About 20 minutes after they arrive, the family and I are elbow deep in these awesome dogs.
Been eating Coneys for decades. Here’s my take. Lafayette wins for atmosphere imo and both American and Lafayette are very close in flavor. Small difference in smokiness. Both great. Both dogs have that all important “snap” when you bite into them. Dully’s has better chili and perhaps the best atmo of all. Sadly their dogs have no snap which is a deal killer for me. Optimum combo would be Lafayette or American with Dully’s chili.
Hi Mark, thanks for the feedback! Can't wait to get back and eat them again haha. The "snap" you're referring to was really impressive and surprising! I guess we haven't had many REAL hotdogs like this with natural casing and each of these (Lafayette and American) had a great snap and they were both AWESOME!
Yeah, without the snap it’s just a chili dog. That and the perfect mild onions. And it should be said that adding ketchup is against the law in Detroit.
Yes we've noticed that! All the locals and veterans in the know eat it without ketchup. With all that flavor I guess ketchup would just interfere with the authentic experience so I'm not surprised this is something to be avoided!
Never been inside American in my life and never will! Lafayette is superior! As for Duly’s, my dad grew up eating at that lunch counter as did I. However...it’s pronounced doo-lee’s, not dough-lee’s. Glad y’all had a great time!
Very few people seem to be aware of this key difference - Lafayette used to use a Winter's brand hot dog while American used Dearborn brand. The garlicky and spices of the Winter (called an L-901) is one reason Lafayette was superior. Unfortunately, Lafayette switched to the same dog as American in like 2015. That destroyed the notable difference. The chili is different as well. Lafayette uses yellow onion compared to the American white onion. The yellow is superior on a coney.
Meh, American and Lafayette are the tourist ones.... the REAL Coney rivalry is between Duly's and Red Hots.(Consider the fact that you showed Anthony Bourdain's segment shot at Duly's. Pronounced DOOLEYS) I and my friend who is a food reporter from CBC Windsor are working our way through the Metro Times list of 30 essential coney islands in the area. photos.metrotimes.com/a-definitive-ranking-of-metro-detroits-most-delicious-coney-islands/?slide=1&coney-time-by-mike-dionne
Hi Michael, thanks for the feedback and the prononcuiation correction! Can't wait to do a follow up episode and a deeper dive into Duly's! We really love Anthony Bourdain and his body of work. Wish he was still around. In any case, we appreciate your thoughts on the matter. Are you still making barley wine?
I've been going to Lafayette for 40 years and its my favorite and I've tried them all.

Jenny And Alex Thnks so much for your kind comment about my Apache video. I’ll keep watching for more videos from you both.
Lafayette 4 life
Having tried neither of them, I'd pick the first one simply because of the (lack of) decor and the guy who made the coney
You gotta come visit and try both! :D
I enjoy them equally, however my pick for number one is senate coney dogs in Detroit, have them delivered to me in Salome Arizona

Low key here is the secret nobody ever says. The coney special w the hamburger meat is better than the regular coney.
It was called a "loose burger" and I agree with you...
Lafayette Coney!!!

Lafayette, all the way!!!! The best waiter in the world!
Yes! They are lovely! And the way how they stack the dishes when they deliver the food?! That’s like an attraction itself! Instagram worthy! Hahaha

Anyone here after Portnoys review? He chose American. Also exposed a lot of that old man's lies...🤣

What was Jenny’s choice?
(Jenny) Hahahaha... you guess? :)
@@JennyAndAlex Cat meat from China? That's my guess. It's a hot dog not a civics exam.
