      By the way, did you notice that the quick ostinato in Carol Of The Bells has the exact shape of the "Dies Irae" motif? (Think Into the Unknown, the intro to Surface Pressure... even multiple times in the guitar solo from Stairway to Heaven! The pattern is down half a step, back up, and then down and back up with a minor 3rd)

    I used to love Christmas so much, especially the music. It used to give me chills, lift me up on the darkest days. Last year, around Christmastime, my dad was dying, and he passed away in January. I have been trying so hard to get that feeling of Christmas magic back this year, but it all felt so flat and sad. Until today. The way you played and arranged these songs brought back all the magic and joy, and gave me those chills again. Thank you.
    P.s. 'Chestnuts roasting on an open fire' was his favourite, I was so glad you included that :)

    In case anyone is interested, 'Carol of the Bells' wasn't originally a Christmas song! It was actually a Ukrainian New Year's folk song called 'Shchedryk' about a swallow flying into a house on New Year's (originally in April) and proclaiming they would have a bountiful year to come. In 1922, the first records of the song were being made and by 1936 an American composer copyrighted and published this Christmas version which we all know today.
    Anyway, Merry Christmas everyone, I wish you a bountiful year to come!

      Meh. All the entries after 1965 are debatable; in 20 more years few of them will be remembered. "River" is a great song no doubt! but the personal agony it conveys (Joni Mitchell losing a baby) makes it a different genre.

    • @mikem668
      @mikem668 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jcarty123 I'd argue the quality declined the year after I was born 🙃 I was amazed both by how many were very old and how many were composed during WWII and within a few years after.
      I take your point about River, but there's another way to see it. It's both nostalgic for those of us who loved it back in the day, but also highlights the sense of isolation many feel around the Christmas season. The songs also track the fragmentation of society. I recently learned that 1950 in the US was the high point of church membership. Meaning Christian churches. I once heard a joke about Irving Berlin, a Russian Jew who turned Easter into a fashion show and Christmas into a winter holiday. Listening to the list, I felt that the very old songs were timeless - even those which were repurposed - while the newer ones were transitory fluff. Empty in a way. Obviously, that could be my age, and my age is definitely a factor. But I don't believe it's the only factor. River seems timeless, it's about escape. About being sad when everyone is supposed to be happy. About being a stranger, far away from home, like Joseph, Mary and Jesus.
      "Oh, I wish I had a river
      I could skate away on
      I wish I had a river so long
      I would teach my feet to fly
      Oh, I wish I had a river
      I could skate away on"
      I have no idea why you think it's about the loss of an actual baby. It's about a break-up, probably with Graham Nash.

      @danpro4519 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@jcarty123 I do agree that it's a stretch to call "River" a Christmas song. The Jingle Bells reference at the beginning is for irony and setting the scene. However, River isn't about losing a baby (it's a break up song)... although Mitchell covered that in a way with "Little Green."

    • @jcarty123
      @jcarty123 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mikem668 The reason I think it's about the loss of an actual baby, is because Joni Mitchell at one point said it was about the loss of an actual baby, which she wanted to sing out - except disguise it as the loss of a boyfriend. k? Let's agree she disguised it well. Now, her agony is legit. I get it about people feeling Holiday Pain if their lives are dominated by abuse or losses. But still, that makes it a different genre. Joseph, Mary and Jesus were happy - and that is kind of the point of their story. God coming into the world; the baby living; hope for redemption & Eternal Life. Just a different thing.

    Every year the traditional carols of my country are being slowly more replaced by some of the mainstream Christmas songs in English. I loved finding new carols in English, some tunes were just so Christmas-y! and I understand I was kinda hard on them with no real reason. Great video ❤
    Edit: I also have found out that every country has their own repertoire of foreign carols! That is so cool

    Great job not just playing, but in memorizing and playing 45 tunes in one sit. Would have liked "What Child Is This?" It's definitely an all-time great song, written in 1865 over the 15th century tune "Greensleeves." It's one of the few where both the original and the adaption are still played.

      Oh man! I just posted something like that before seeing yours. I've had friends say, "it's not THAT bad! What about .." and I say, "Well, none of those songs were 'written' by a former Beatle!"

    I like these scaled back versions, so much that I am doing a week of vids for them on my channel, just a guitar and vocals with a bit of reverb... feels good to sing them, feels good to hear them

    “The Christmas song” is my favourite. Besides, an unforgivable miss is “somewhere in my memory” by John Williams
