@@Felled-angel people are free to say what they are thinking in this country but they may be criticised , it depends on who's listening and what is being said
I always find it funny when those representing the most wealthy educational institutions argue for an increase or uncapped tuition fees. Each day it feels like we become more and more American with our way of seeing the UK. There seems to be a thread through society of us prioritising profit over the genuine welfare or interest of citizens. It seems somewhat counterproductive to me to have students coming out laden with vast amounts of debt and competing with record levels of prices all throughout society. No wonder many are struggling with mental health issues and stress. After having gone to university, I really hope there's a shift away from this route for many jobs and we re-emphasise the importance of apprenticeships.
Tbh all education to British born people should be free and we should charge others that come from other countries that way we got an educational advantage but we let everyone in and let them take that knowledge to their country and that’s why these countries are doing better than us
Economic constraints can limit practical exercise of speech rights as affordability impacts who can access higher education and participate in intellectual discourse. Expensive education effectively silences many perspectives by making participation prohibitively costly. A working-class student might have to choose between taking on massive debt, working multiple jobs, or simply not attending university at all. This isn't just about individual opportunity. When entire socioeconomic groups are priced out of higher education, we lose diverse viewpoints. The intellectual discourse becomes narrower, dominated by those with financial privilege. Critical perspectives from different lived experiences get marginalised. For instance, a first-generation college student from an immigrant community might have unique insights into social dynamics that a more homogeneous student body would miss. But if systemic economic constraints prevent their participation, those insights remain unheard. So "free speech" becomes more theoretical than practical. It's not just about having the right to speak, but having meaningful access to platforms where those speeches can be heard and seriously considered.
Yeah…well…with the censorship of “social” media by huge corporations and the cost of access to main stream media…what else is one left with other than screaming on a street corner?

God! They must have been desperate. This patronising, odious little man with his Thatcherite tendencies makes me want to puke. Nothing good can come of this. Oxford University has gone down in my estimation.
It had been a flood of foreign students having been coming to UK they pay an average 17k annually, but still not enough. Where does the money goes Anyone knows 🤔
Heres your answer "Staff classified as “managers and non-academic professionals” at UK universities increased some 60 per cent over 12 years, from just under 32,000 in the academic year 2005/06 to almost 51,000 in 2017/18. At the same time, the number of technicians and of secretarial posts, supporting academics, declined" This number is even higher in 2024, but we dont have figures yet.
The article was examining the wrong issues. Oxford University has been the common denominator of every major policy failure from government, both Tory and more recently Labour, for many years now. The recent generations of Oxbridge politicians have proved to be incompetent at developing and delivering policy (Brexit, budgets etc), unprofessional, agressive, contemptuous, nepotistic, behave with appalling disrespect, and have brought this university’s previous good reputation to it’s knees. In recent years, the most competent ministers in Parliament have usually come from other universities, not been to university or attended the Sandhurst military academy. The challenge for the next chancellor is not going to be about funding, but about delivering alumni who can behave responsibly , and demonstrate well thought through ideas and develop and deliver them in future policy with competence and professionalism. Oxford’s alumni fails on all these counts.
Their fairness is measured by how much you can collect just for your own good, not by equal opportunities for those who don't have it, for the good of the workers.
Why does he want this? "Role description The Chancellor is the ceremonial head of the University of Oxford. While this key role has no executive responsibilities, it is more than symbolic; the Chancellor provides supportive and useful advice and guidance to the University, particularly to the Vice-Chancellor. The Chancellor presides at events such as Encaenia and at the Chancellor’s Court of Benefactors and is sometimes expected to take a leading role at other official events. The Chancellor is the Visitor (an external figure of authority on whom the college can call for advice and for arbitration if insoluble dispute arises amongst its governing body) of five colleges and also chairs the Committee for the Nomination of the Vice-Chancellor. The Chancellor must be readily accessible and available throughout the year. This is an unremunerated position, but all role-related travel and expenses will be covered."
What is the point of having a language when some one says words mean what I say they mean the world has gone crazy I thought Oxford was a seat of learning this is Orwellian double speak. and goes beyond free speech, which means passing and failing Exams will be decided by someones interpretation of what the correct answer should be rather than what is academically judged on the basis of science
William Hague, if I recall the chap who advocated for boots on the ground in Syria fighting on the same side as Islamists, the very ones our troops were fighting in Afghanistan.
Yes great areas. A subject this man always takes up. Throughout his career hes been in doubt about everything , always running a middle road . To day? Out dated.
Over the past decade, Hague seems to have morphed into a Libdem politician in terms of his attitudes and thinking. He has quietly retreated from his early strong conservative convictions to someone who seems to be a man who ‘sits on the fence’ when challenged about the disastrous negative changes that have occurred in the economy and the demographics in the last ten years. He tries to sound like a wise old philosopher and analyst, but he never quite succeeds. Instead he comes across like a bloke who’s vague, dull and frightened of his own shadow to articulate any opinions which sound conservative.
Of course, when someone goes downhill and you don't like them anymore they're automatically more on the other side to whatever side your tribe is on, right? "He must be Libdem now" bro think for yourself
@ Hague has become the stereotypical establishment man, who doesn’t want to ‘rock the boat’ on any topical issues, since he doesn’t like causing controversy. Hence, he issues platitudes about free speech on college campuses, but because he’s equivocal about most things, he’s not the man to be pro active as chancellor and ensure free speech becomes a reality. He’s settled into old age far too quickly and it shows.
