  • For my entire life I've always been passionate about multiple creative outlets like creating music, drawing, doing puzzles, and other creative hobbies. It's fun to have all of these but it becomes a problem when I no longer have the time to do all of them in the ways that I want. So I've had to come up with a way to manage them effectively.

Oh man! I have thought about this often. I have so many creative hobbies that I try to pursue, but with also having a job where I work 50+ hours a week, it is almost impossible to devote time to all of them, and often I find myself struggling over which one to focus on when I actually have some free time. The life of the creative person (who is stuck in the corporate world in order to make a living) often feels like a curse.

Can't you quit and get a job where you work fewer hours and can do something you enjoy more, if I may ask,? And I can't imagine going to the same place to work every day ..I need a job where I can travel a lot.

    • @derekcutsinger3511

@@leif1075 LOL Yes, I have daydreamed of that quite often. Unfortunately, the things I tend to enjoy don't pay that great, and one needs money in order to survive. My bills won't pay themselves, and life is expensive in this day and age.

I've gone through this exact same thing. Programming, making music, playing instruments, making art. I figured out i need to prioritse a couple of them, and do the other things on the side, else ill get too overwhelmed.

I am interested in everything! Mastered many, ever since I was small, I need a 48hr day, live 10 lives and then some. Juggling eggs has been my life. I can not schedule due to family commitments and I am a butterfly to every flower out there. I have put everything out of reach and left myself only with art supplies so that I can focus just on that, so far so good. A great gift to have so many interests but sometimes feel its a curse.

I'm like you, with my interests and mind pulling me in different creative directions. The frustration is that the more time you focus on a single thing, the better you get at it. So shifting from one to the other slows the momentum toward expertise. I find myself admiring creatives who have a laser focus on one thing and end up being great at it. But I reassure myself that if I see these aspects of life as being -- for me -- more ways of enjoying life than becoming an expert at something, then a more "scattered" approach is just fine.

As a kid it was art, models, music. Now I have electronics, music, exercise and gaming. It kind of goes in spurts. I also learned a couple languages along the way. Now I'm so busy I look at my electronics bench, my shelf full of books a wish I had the time.

Thanks. I'm 62 and gave been like you all my life. I've changed careers three times. And have had probably 15 hobbies as well as 6 or more sports, travel, languages, two children, professional certifications etc. arghh
Setting aside specific times for the highest priorities and the most fulfilling things is an excellent method. Thank you for reminding me. Sometimes we just charge ahead and forget to stop and take stock. 👍🏽

Lot of people struggling and this prioritizing method works very well if you can choose one hobby that really wanna master and doing other hobbies in spare time. You can be satisfied with every hobby by atleast you getting very good at one thing. If you keep jump from hobby to hobby you won't be good at anything.

I can really relate to this, and I’m almost 60! Still working full time, so it’s a juggling act every day. Am still figuring it out. I was so desperate last year that I read Atomic Habits. Haha! Lots of good suggestions, but I got overwhelmed and threw it in a closet in disgust. For now I’m working through a great drawing with ink book and doing other art whenever I can squeeze it in. Along with all my other obsessions. Such is life! ❤

This is exactly what I have done in the situation. I only recently realised I have to prioritise what I'm best at (that I still can enjoy doing with more structure) and what has the most potential for making money. It's all fun and games in your 20s, but in your 30s you must prioritise your best shot and make some form of compromise with competing interests

Thank you!!! Based on what you said an so many comments here I now know I am not the only one! Since I retired I began trying different art forms and one led to another and its like being a kid in a candy store…everything catches my attention! Ultimately I do not focus on any one form for a long period of time..I tend to rotate thru them depending on my mood because I do these for fun, for me, not anything else. However, focusing on just one on a schedule may be the way for me to improve in one area, while still doing others during unscheduled time. Thanks for sharing your ideas. I only recently discovered your channel and I enjoy your teaching style and your works.

I’ve got so many hobbies as well. Not all are creative. Actually, probably not most of them. I like painting, photography, traveling, biking (both road and mountain), paddle boarding, kayaking, hiking and camping. But I also work 45 hours a week so between my autoimmune disorders and so much working, I don’t get to do any of them much. Painting is done sitting down so I do that more than the other hobbies. I so wish I could paint for a living and then have time for my other hobbies too instead of having to choose.

One day, creating/earning a living in both realms! :) I appreciate your experience and wisdom, man! :)

My hobbies at the moment are art, karate, learning mandarin chinese, cooking, singing, dance, archery, video games, music and clothes. Im planning to be a video game artist as a job. Ive always wanted to learn an instument throughout my life but i cant pick one, right now im considering violin since i also played the violin when i was younger. Im also thinking of creating small and simple vlog type videos. I find that i get obsessed with various things very easily.
Rught now i also have a lot of stuff going on, ive started learning to drive, and i need to apply for university. Once im a university i will have to stop doing various hobbies which i do now.

I have that problem, I love drawing, reading, crafting felt dolls, painting my Warhammer miniatures, gardening, then there's the things I want to pick up again from my teens (play Magic the Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons), AND then there's the things I wish to learn more about, like charcoal drawing, painting with watercolours, and playing the piano. I tend to not get around to the learning things, because they require studying rather than to just sit down and do it as a form of relaxation. Taking care of home and hearth and the kids means I'm lucky to get to do 1 hobby a few times a week.

I respectfully disagree. It's the price you have to pay when you have multiple hobbies, not being a "master" of anything, and, while prioritizing is all good (which means you're realizing your hobbies are not actually of equal value), there is no reason not to be spontaneous and do whatever you feel like doing on the spot. I am a control freak myself and used to do everything based off lists I've established the day before, whether I felt like doing it or not. It does not work, doing creative hobbies, while feeling forced because you decided to do them in a specific moment and a specific mind state, two days ago. We are not the same people every day, we are the slaves of very particular chemical reactions in the brain and we chase those for all of our lives.
Most importantly, it FEELS like a job (and feeling will always, always trump logic, particularly in art). At the end of the day, whether you spend one full week doing painting, and one full week doing music, or space them out hour by hour throughout each day, it doesn't really matter, you end up spending the same amount of time. But if you think transactionally in art, in terms of time spent vs results, you'll always end up disappointed. Art is not a transactional thing, and it may or may not come, your only job is to hammer that nail, no matter the artistic path you chose for yourself, or how many such paths, because the purpose is not becoming a "master" (you'll most likely never become one even if you did one single thing instead of multiple), the purpose, I believe, is achieving that transcedental state, of reaching superior planes of existence, of presence, that can only be given by art and art alone.
As I got older (I'm 40 now), I always chose flow over the need of control. I'm still improving. But I'm improving without self-imposed pressure, and art is my escape, not my prison. (Again, I'm talking about hobbies, not businesses, these are very, very different things)

I have wayyy too many creative hobbies. Sometimes I feel I get distracted and have difficulty getting focused, also the adhd is a struggle. & I work on something else rather than accomplish what I need to do.. like I’ll work on something easier rather than get to the difficult parts of a craft. For example, my main thing is seeing but it involves a lot of tedious, not fun tasks… and I’ll turn to my knitting project instead and do that while watching tv. Then I’ll be stuck at the knitting project so I can watch tv

In Islam, we have a term called long hope, meaning the person who looks at everything in this life and wants it. He wants to become a painter, doctor, singer, and writer. When he collected these false hopes, he did not achieve a single thing. My advice, as Islam advises, is to take a job and be content with a hobby.
