    When my cousins leopard gecko was a baby, He would scream right before he ate, right before he went to the bathroom, right before he went to sleep and right before he drank water. He screamed until someone came and watched him. He especially hated not being watched as he ate, if u had tried to walk away he would start screaming again. Even though he’s older and has stopped screaming he still likes being watched while he eats

    I got my leopard gecko from a pet store. He was horribly thin and I was told by multiple people that I should pick a different gecko because he wouldn’t make it a few weeks. I’ve had him for about five years now. I don’t hold him too much, but he’s never screamed, doesn’t wave his tail often(usually only when I have my cleaning gloves on), and always smiles, even though he came from pretty awful conditions. It’s sad to think what could’ve happened to him. Definitely glad I have him.

    Just inherited two leopard geckos over the weekend from friend moving out of town. They've lived in a plastic tub with aquarium gravel for their two years of life. Immediately set out to learn how to properly care for these little guys and found you on TH-cam - HUGE THANKS! For everyone who knows a lot about any subject, there are lots of others who are literally just starting out and know nothing. They now have a 40 gallon double door habitat, with lots of stuff coming from Amazon. Heating pad, thermostat, humid hide, calcium, lights, etc. We'll definitely be working on their home to ensure they have plenty of hides, hot/cool areas, proper diet, dig box, plants, and a much better life then they've seen to this point. Hopefully they enjoy! And thanks again for putting out such great content that some of us absolutely RELY on to get a jump start on this new adventure with living creatures. So much to learn

    • @nightinggale6470
      @nightinggale6470 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That’s awesome! I’d definitely separate them ASAP, though, they’re very likely to fight sooner or later. I have seen countless cases of geckos seeming fine for years, then snapping and seriously injuring or killing each other. 40 gallons is a good size for one, but not two. Dig boxes, while better than nothing, offer nowhere near as much enrichment as half or full loose sub. A soil/playsand or soil/sand/clay mix is best. Heat mats are unnecessary. What lights are you using?

    • @businessraptor127
      @businessraptor127 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I'd stay away from heating pads if I were you. Basking light is way better and gives them the uv they need. Good on you for doing right by your little guys

    A note on bites: Leopard gecko bites have the capacity to hurt, but normally only if they manage to pinch the skin. It's just that, 90% of the time, they're going to get their mouth around your finger, or on the flat of your hand, so they don't really pinch any skin. Their jaws are strong relative to their size, but they don't have very sharp teeth.
    A note on fast tail flicking: Some people also think this behavior could have come about to distract predators while the gecko is hunting and not paying attention. Since the tail can detach in an emergency, it would be a lot more advantageous for the gecko if a predator were to grab the tail than the entire body of the gecko.
    A note on glass surfing: Female geckos (and sometimes males) may glass surf for all of breeding season, but stop for the rest of the year. My female gecko glass surfs every day during breeding season, but is usually content to just climb on stuff and lay on her favorite spots any other time.

    • @o0gothique0o37
      @o0gothique0o37 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I got bit by one of my geckos and it surprised the dickens out of me, actually made me bleed quite a bit- What you mentioned must have been what happened because usually they don't bite me but I think she was going to eat a cricket and I just didn't realize it.

    • @danieltaylor4185
      @danieltaylor4185 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@o0gothique0o37 Yeah, when my gecko is hungry, she will hunt my finger, and she has missed the food item when I've tried hand-feeding her in the past. I also was handling her once after getting some vitamin powder on my fingers, and she also bit my finger then as well.
      Whether or not your finger is going to bleed depends on how your gecko bites it. In my experience, the most common bite is going to be on your finger tip, where it's protected by the finger nail, or the side of the hand where geckos usually have some trouble getting their mouth around your hand.
      Though, just be wary if your gecko bites you and then releases their grip quickly. If they hang on for a while, that's usually a sign they mistook your hand for food, but quick strikes are a defensive behavior and is a sign that they felt threatened. Defensive strikes are often accompanied by the gecko extending their legs to stand taller, putting their tail up and slowly waving it back and forth, or if they are very stressed out, you might hear them scream or make a kind of quick barking noise.

    Love this video! I knew most of this stuff because we’ve just gotten our leo very recently on July 7th, and I have been geeking blogs a lot and vids like this one. Yours has been the best of all of them! Simple and to the point. Appreciated this. You had a couple of nuggets that I didn’t know about their behavior, such as the non eating puberty thing. Fascinating! Our girl 1-2 Leia is doing fantastically well, and is a wonderful addition to our family! She doesn’t seem to mind being handled as long as we are calm and soft spoken. We love her a lot. The tail waggles when she goes after a cricket are the BEST! She was brought to our local Rescue league and a reptile expert had her. We won her in a silent auction quite unexpectedly. If anyone is on the fence and they are a good caretaker, I highly recommend getting one as a pet!

    My leopard gecko never screams at me lol. I’ve never heard her this is a list of things she does:
    Eat
    Sleep
    Drink water
    Licks my finger
    Licks lips
    Licks floor
    Walks around
    Sploots
    Yawns. LIKE OH MY GOD HER KOUTH BECOMES SO WIDE I- lol
    Rests head on rock like a pillow
    Is cute
    Poops tiny poops lol
    Pees
    Breathes air
    Explores tank
    Sheds
    Walks on my hand
    Climbs on her logs and her hiding places and her plant
    Goes in her water bowl for two seconds then comes out XD
    Looks at me waiting to be sprayed by the water squirted XD
    Licks water from the water squirts
    And she also flicks away mealworms if she doesn’t want it and it crawls on her hand XD

    Great video!
    I’m a long time keeper and breeder of many geckos. Just wanted to share with you that leopard geckos can be active during the day time hours. I have several, especially females, that will occasionally hunt during the day and actually climb and bask under the UV light & heat. (I mostly use overhead heat...)
    Crespuscular, overnight...I find them to be cathemeral.
    Geckos in (bioactive) enclosures that get close to mimicking their environment (mostly semi-arid/arid depending on the subspecies) will display all sorts of behaviors.
    Great video! Keep up the good work!

And never really eats when I put her bowl of worms during the day. She’s eating cause she poops in her normal spot. I will now just put the bowl at night and remove it in the morning. • @lydiaeddins2083
      @lydiaeddins2083 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Most leopard geckos will fight if kept together. They do not get lonely and will be fine on their own. Males should only be kept with females to breed. Even professional breeders do not keep males with females all the time, because the males can be bullies. Some females can live together depending on personality, but it is better to house them on their own.
