This is an incredible list. You're in for some amazing times! I'm happy to see so many of my favorites on here, hopefully you enjoy them as much as I do. Abercrombie's character work is definitely as good as the hype makes it sound. A blend between Riyria and Three Musketeers is a great way of describing Greatcoats. I'm planning to start Wars of Light and Shadow very soon also! Soon as I'm done my Stormlight Archive re-read.
Love your videos and it's great to hear your thoughts. I'm currently reading the Osten Ard books, and I want to finish both series (the second series will be finished this November). The other 2 huge fantasy series I want to read are The Wars of Light and Shadow & The Wheel of Time, as well as finishing the last 3 books in the Realm of The Elderlings. So much to read! Good luck on your reading journey and I'll definitely be stopping by to see how it's going.
Thank you for your wonderful video. I have some of the books you mentioned in my TBR collection. I just love your descriptions and your voice. Has anyone approached you to record audio books? I do a lot of immersion reading.
Thanks for your kind words. People ask me that a lot about Audio and I would really like to make a first step in that direction. Perhaps you know what to do.
I really enjoyed The Green Bone Saga, with Jade Legacy being my favourite of the bunch. I cannot recommend them enough - interested to hear your thoughts when you do get to them eventually! I have just purchased Tigana after your recommendation, and I am looking forward to diving in!
best of luck with this ambitious TBR! I'm bogged down with my reading & life and just getting through one book will feel like a major victory at this point!
Thanks man. I just thought about you the other day, wonder where Eric had went. Hope you can find that mysteriously hidden path upward again very soon!
I will dive into Memory, Sorrow and Thorn probably early next year. I am excited for that. I got The Dandelion Dynasty in a beautiful Broken Binding edition recently and will start that soon, I think. I have read the first two books of the Green Bone Saga recently and the third one is my next read. This is well on its way to be one of my favourite series of all time. It is very different from what you'd expect from fantasy, but the world building and character work, as well as the story itself is impeccable. And I love the way Fonda Lee writes.
When reading Malazan, the Ten Very Big Books podcast is really useful- they go through each book chapter by chapter so helps clarify if you are confused. Apparently it all makes sense in the end though.
I noticed that you mentioned James Islington, have you read The will of the many? This book was one of my favourite discoveries of the last year, cannot recommend it enough!
Ah, Janny Wurts! She's on my TBR, too (as are quite a few of the authors you mentioned). However, I was going to jump right into Wars of Light and Shadow-which, upon reflection and your observation of her condensed prose, might not be the best idea. So thank you for bringing To Ride Hell's Chasm to my attention. I'll start with that instead! I'm also going to recommend a fantasy series I don't see a lot of people talking about on BookTube: Bone, by Jeff Smith. The reason it isn't often discussed on BookTube (despite its overall popularity), I think, is twofold: it's marketed toward children, and it's a comic book. I read it as a kid and have always loved comics, so I guess you could say I was the perfect target audience. I've reread it in recent years, however, wondering whether I was viewing it through rose-tinted glasses, and I'm glad to say it's not only still wonderful, but remains one of my favorite fantasy series (and comics!) of all time. It's relatively low on violence and is a coming-of-age of sorts, so I think it's right up your alley-even if you don't normally read comics, I would say, because Smith's art is very accessible. Anyway, thanks for another great video. Here's to our ever-growing TBRs!
What a wonderful resource video! Thank you for doing all the work!! I have read much less fantasy than you have, since I only started about 3 years ago and continue reading from my massive mystery TBR. My favorite subgenre so far seems to be urban fantasy but there are subgenres that I have yet to try. I can't seem to finish a series by one author before starting another author. I feel blessed to have so many options to choose from. Can't wait to learn which author you pick up next!!
I am so afraid to try Janny Wurts, I am a non native english speaker and from what I've heard, she might be above my reading level. I didn't have much trouble reading the Lord of the Rings but I've seen some quotes from Janny Wurts and not sure I can do it unfortunately. I am going to try the Empire Trilogy by her that she co-wrote with Feist, I heard the writing was easier. The Liveship Traders is sooooo good, it's great to read during the summer months. The Name of the Wind is worth it for the prose alone. Memory, Sorrow and Thorns is on my highly anticipated fantasy to read too ! The Licanius trilogy I'm not so sure about, I heard mixed things especially when it comes to the writing style. Oh First Law is a good one if you want to try some grimdark fantasy because it's not too much I've found except maybe for the standalones. I'm not into the gritty grimdark fantasy but Joe Abercrombie's characters writing is indeed excellent and I ended up loving it ! If you want to try audiobooks or if you already do audiobooks, I 100% recommand the First Law audiobooks or to do immersive reading (audio + reading the text at the same time), the narrator is absolutely amazing ! And I'm not really into audiobooks to start with. A Song of Ice and Fire is my favorite serie with The Realm of the Elderlings by Robin Hobb so yeah, I totally recommand it even if it is unfinished. Malazan is a hit or miss serie, not sure it will be for you according to your description of what you like in Fantasy but we will see. It wasn't for me in any ways, I am too much of a character focused reader.
Empire may just be the perfect entry point for trying Janny Wurts. And her WarsOLAShadow, don’t be too much intimidated. If you read all the authors you mentioned in English, I’m quite sure you can manage miss Wurts as well
Some very good titles! My goal for the Realm of the Elderlings is to read 1 series a year, last year I read the Farseer trilogy and I'm currently in the middle of the Liveship Traders. It's hard not to get distracted by all the other excellent fantasy books out there though. Not to mention all the interesting books outside of the fantasy genre. Reading Tolstoy on the "side" haha!
I'm going to steer you away from the path of mainstream picks - take a few minutes to look up Joan D. Vinge and her Tiamat series. I think it's very likely to be added to your growing TBR list 🤓
anyone recommended simon r greens haven series or steven brusts taltos series? both excellent and only about 200 pages to each book. also both are quite humourous and action packed.
Some interesting books mentioned. Food for thought. The ever expanding tbr! Happy reading to you.

Nice list of Books Dutch! I'm right there with you I want to read most of the same books you do! I'm looking forward to G. G. K. and Tad Williams.
Thanks Todd, curious about your reading experiences

I’ve read Name of the Wind four times because it is my favorite book and series in the last 20 years. Sure hope book 3 does get finished!!!

A song for Arbon is absolutely beautiful 😍

Yeah, Green Bone is high on my list!

Thanks for this good tip!
I noticed that you mentioned James Islington, have you read The will of the many? This book was one of my favourite discoveries of the last year, cannot recommend it enough!
Looking forward to your breakdown of Janny Wurts

Loved hearing your tbrs

Thanks BJ! Glad I could add some more to your impressive TBR. 😂
Wow, what a year of reading you have ahead of you!
And it just keeps on going.

Exactly the same for me! One series a year, currently on Ship of Destiny. Such great books.
Sounds good: one RotE-trilogy a year.

I will look her up, as I do with all heartfelt recommendaions. But the mainstream picks are likely to remain there. Thanks.
anyone recommended simon r greens haven series or steven brusts taltos series? both excellent and only about 200 pages to each book. also both are quite humourous and action packed.
Steven Brust is on my TBR.
Ah, so much to read, so little time
So frustratingly true
So many books on your TBR, I hope you’re retired!
I'm afraid not. Still some 8 years to go!
