This is so beautiful! It's so interesting to me that some people would never look down, or up... and notice the beauty in the rocks, or grasses, or the colors in the sky, or canopy of trees..but then some see it! Like you said, even a pile of buttons! And they capture it, in photography, or painting, etc.! It's amazing to me. ❤ And I am just in awe of your talent in pastels! You make it look so effortless and smooth...just gliding across the paper! This was just a pleasure to watch! I can't wait to see it in Critique Club! Thank you for sharing this Lindsay! It is beautiful! ❤
I had never thought of the concept of letting people see images through your eyes before. It gives a lovely insight as to why other people's art always seem better than your own. You know what you see in your art, so it is almost too familiar to you. Thank you for sharing a lovely tutorial.
I’ve been watching your videos for a long time and love to watch you paint rocks. I enjoyed hearing about how passionate you are about the different kinds of rocks you paint. Thank you again Lindsay for sharing your talent and Love for what you do.
Wow this turned out absolutely beautiful!!! You always amaze me with how talented you are in ALL mixed media! Thank you so much for sharing this!!! 😊❤️
I have a non- aerosol fixative spray - SpectraFix and yes it can be a bit blotchy when sprayed. I was thinking about trying to find a sprayer like my garden sprayer that you pressurize by pumping up and transfer the fixative to that as they produce a nice fine spray. Just needs to be a bit smaller. Something that takes half a litre instead of 2 litres. Love the pan pastel painting. I'll have to go back and finish your pastel course one day. Just that my craft desk is also my working from home desk too now and it makes it hard to avoid spraying fixative on my screen and filling my keyboard with pastel dust.
It would be a cool wallpaper or printed on fabric. There are companies that take your own images and print on fabric or wallpaper. Julie Fei Fan Balzer has some of her images for sale on things like cups, floor mats etc. This rock art piece would look great on a floor mat. I'd buy it. There's definitely a market for your prints Lindsay.
I am so glad you used Pan pastels! I have some, but I am in need of a lot of practice with them, as everything else😂 Your painting is over the top! Rocks are a favorite of mine! Thanks for a wonderful video!
I collected rocks in an old metal Band-Aid box from every place we went camping when I was a kid. This was great watching these rocks go from blocked in to dark spots between them to really popping off the page with the shadings on each rock. Really pretty.
Im also a rock person, my best friend and I collected them as kids, my mom has a collection and my grandma gave us some from her collection. One of them was large and smooth so we used it as a door stop.
Oh, so great, I am learning so much from you! Thanks, finally, some more pan pastels! Not enough videos on them and their versatility. I didn't realize their capabilities when I first tried them a million years ago. I am just getting back into pastels. Fun, thanks again
Never fails to amaze me how a few strokes of light and dark create something so realistic. You and @SandyAllnock will make an artist of me yet! Also, I love wood. All the bark and knots and shapes tell the story of not just the tree but the immediate surroundings
YOU ROCK!!! My daughter wanted to know what was so funny! “The butt rock” haha I enjoy all pastels but pan pastels(Jane Davenport) and the general pastel pencils for details or just for the variety. I started with eyeshadows like you suggested and fell in love! My son collected rocks from trips around the world as souvenirs. We’re rock people too❤️ thank you so much for this💕
Remarkable use of the medium and especially that palette knife with the "sock" on it. I love how you compare it to playing with make-up! lol! Sorry, no idea what that is like! lol!! This came out fantastic! EDIT: just curious. I am paranoid about pastel powders in the air and breathing them in. Do you find that there is much dust from these, even if it's not very noticeable? Also, I've read in the past that we should wear gloves when using pastels, as the dust can get into our skin. Do you think there's any merit to that, especially using fingers to blend? I admit, I haven't used pastels in a few years, but I am super guilty of not protecting myself when I do. I should! lol! Also, our place in Maine is about 3 minutes from the ocean and it's _all_ sand, no rocks! I cannot wait for the warmer weather to spend more time there and explore the beach, do some plein air, and just enjoy that ocean!! :)
You must be in southern maine! I'm totally expecting an invite this summer! I dont think the dust is a problem, I don't even need to tap off the painting. You leave it all on the paper. I've never worn gloves but if I used patels day in and day out I may. Panpastel are nontoxic but i doubt many brands use the real nasty pigments anymore.
How cool. This is one craft thing I never ended up buying. As much as I was tempted I never gave in to the pan pastels. They are way too expensive here. Love your rocks Lindsay. 👍🏾💯❤️💯❤️. Hugz
Thanks Lindsay. Oh great. Another have to have to add to the artsy witchcraft and wizardry homeschool edition supply wish list. I think my muggles are oversaturated with my training. They are thoroughly unimpressed and my daughter is turning into Aunt Petunia.😉😂🤣💜👍Super ROCKS. Would look great under a glass tabletop. I'm so 70s.😉
I really like rocks. You paint rocks so beautifully. And, I received the 12 set of Generals Pastel Pencils for Christmas - I haven't used them yet; glad to see you include them in this piece. Thanks
Thank you ,woke up ,first have an art class of yours,it is so great and fit for me,I paint people on rocks, and rocks are so heavy to carry from far away river, you give me an idea may I can you your way to paint rocks first ,than to paint people on the rocks painted by me using your skills I learnt here from your video.thanks.cause the pandemic the way to the river was closed ,so I have no rock at all.
I love this painting and tutorial comments! It’s one of my favorite videos... between watching you bring life to the rocks and your voice being so relaxed while you were doing the voice over, it was extremely calming and such a joy. I have the full collection of pan pastels although I’ve yet to do an actual painting. I made a few backgrounds in my art journals but that’s really about it. I was amazed by a few strokes of light & and a few strokes of dark creating such depth and detail. I also have the Derwent pastel pencils and Faber Castell stick pastels but after investing in the supplies, books, and papers I realized that I don’t like the dust (even though the pan pastels have very little dust) and the extra effort to prevent smudging, etc. However... I gotta say that you have inspired me to try again. I love rocks. I have a small collection of them and hope to use them to try this technique. thanks so much for sharing your creativity with us. Have a great day and stay safe! 🙂
Wow, i LOVE this design Lindsay... Absolute brillance here, i have been unsure about pan pastels & lately i have become so impressed at how well they work... Ty for sharing this amazing technique... 👍👍👍💗
Oh I’m one of those artists that can’t tolerate the texture on my fingers of chalk / a pastels and rubbing it on paper is an awful sensation, PanPastel are super, the starter PanPastel sets are quite reasonable of 4-5 colors with applicators Love Rocks 😍 you created lovely ones
Absolutely beautiful rocks Lindsay 😍 You are beyond talented at so many different mediums... I learn so much from your videos 🌟 I love my PanPastels and use them as my underlayer for my pastel pencil drawings. As a few people have mentioned... SpectraFix says it's environmentally safe and sprays from a non-aerosol type bottle. I do find it does spray a little spotty tho. I bought one of those pump action pressurized sprayers people use for their plants or hair and find it's a little better. I find you just have to make sure you don't overdo it tho... I tend to spray a couple of light layers drying in between.
@@cassiescreations9828 you're welcome... SpectraFix says it's odor free (which I found it is), non-toxic, all Natural, and all media. The bottle says it's good for soft pastels, oil pastel, chalk, Conte, colored pencil, graphite, charcoal... On paper, yupo canvas, ceramic, fabric, glass, leather, wood, and stone. I personally use it as a fixative for my PanPastel and pastel pencil drawings on PastelMat and charcoal drawings on pretty much a standard drawing paper. But boy did I make a big mistake of spraying too much my first time. Thankfully I was able to blot up the splotches with a tissue and they weren't really noticable once it dried. So that's why I gave the warning to go light especially til you know how fine the mist is that your spray bottle sprays.... Even test the spray bottle beforehand.
I’m with you - don’t really know why but I love rocks. Collected them for quite a few years while growing up but we moved a lot and rocks were heavy to move so eventually they went by the wayside. Love your painting and that you used pan pastels and pencils! 😘😘😘

I’m just not sure I’m the kind of person that likes to sit down and do a paintings, I more like to just play in a sketchbook or art journal. Doesn’t keep me from gazing longingly at them in the art store 😂.
Well I watched that just to see the medium. Never used before & don’t plan to add to my already too much supply’s, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks for the Video.
Love this wonderful artwork. Reminds me of rock hunting at Lake Superior beaches. I'm always on the hunt for heart shaped rocks and sea glass. Have never tried pan pastels. I'm glad to learn more of this medium. Thanks for the video.
Fascinating to watch. No experience with pan pastels, but looks fun. TFS Lindsay. I've collected a lot of rocks over the years and have a rock garden. 😺
What a wealth of information there is in this video. I got a couple identical eye shadow boxes with a bunch of colors in each to use as mica so they may be too sparkly, but they might make some nice quartz-like effects to my stick pastels. My sticks are almost 50 years old and have been packed away for a long time, but recently I ran across them. The fixative may flatten the color out, too. I'll have to play around and see. Thanks so much for this.
Such a pretty piece Lindsay 😍 I have some Martha Stewart pan pastels that I impulse bought on Amazon or ebay and there they sit... I'm glad you got this out. Good to see someone using the medium.
Thanks ! I am considering trying pastels as a base for my colored pencil work so this really helped. I am also working on rocks in my current picture, so this was so helpful.
You make things look so easy. Lovely picture. I'm glad I watched it, I had been considering the pastel sticks, but I think I'm going to look for some pan pastels instead with a few pencils 😊
This was so Good in several ways! I have seen colorists use these in their coloring pages... and kinda put-off by oh another supply to learn! But to know I can try it with eye shadows to see if I like it is so great! Plus to see how they are used in a painting SO PRETTY by the way.. was awesome Thanks for a really great demonstration... I just mite try them!😉😁😊
You are so talented! I’m not sure there is a medium you haven’t mastered. The rock painting is beautiful. I love all of the colors and they look so realistic.
Thank you so much for this video! I've been wanting to learn more about pan pastels and this video taught me a lot. You give so much information while your working. I always save your videos to watch over and over! :0)
Lindsay, I really loved this. I will for sure be trying this one. I want to order a few more collars & a few tools from Pan Pastel b4 I start. I only have the basic 10 collars. And I have really enjoyed them. So I'm ready to get a little more. I want the blender pan. Anyway, the stones look so pretty. TYFS
I’ve needed to be motivated to use my PanPastels. I just rearranged where I store them in hopes that a new placement would help. My setup before was a pain.
HI Lindsay. I am very very thankful you showed this. I bought the full set of Pan Pastels a few years ago and sadly never used them, didn't really know what to do with them. I know....I'm still asking myself why but I'm glad I did. What was the fixative you used? Also can you use water color paper with them? Thank you again...I also still have the water color class I have not completed and need to get back to. Hope you can still help me along with that. The past two years have been quite a challenge and now getting back on track. As always it is such a joy to watch you and be inspired by you stay safe...good luck with the dancing...sounds like fun
These are next on my list to get😄. I had them in my save for later cart for a while but I decided to wait til maybe Christmas or if there's a sale during Thanksgiving weekend.
Your picture looks so cool, i was between buying that Sennelier 120 set or get the 20 extra darks to go with my 20 painter set, the pan pastels won, lol. I really appreciate you helping us make better spending decisions....sale or not i haven't been using my regular chalk pastels since i purchased the pans and i am exited to try your rock picture.
This is soo cool! I’m waiting for my 20 color set and can’t wait to play with them. May I ask where you got the long double ended sponge tool? Has white ends on a black stick. I find make up sponges but they’re are so short. Hhmm some how I missed the first time you mentioned them. When I rewatched this I caught your reference of them. 😁 Many thanks for all of your tutorials!
I‘m thinking of getting a basic set of pan pastels for background work, so thank you for all your information! Have you tried the blending medium they offer?
I wonder what would happen if you applied a layer of blending medium on your surface before you start painting... Would that be like bob ross's liquid white? Idk but that medium interests me
Very nice rendition Lindsay! PS: Could you kindly link the ref photo? I know you mentioned you would link it but I am unable to find it, unless I am not looking properly ❤️

I really appreciate you helping us make better spending decisions....sale or not i haven't been using my regular chalk pastels since i purchased the pans and i am exited to try your rock picture.
Thanks!
Super beautiful! 😘😍
Hi Lindsay, this Painting is great. I'm looking for the link to the reference photo. I can't find it?
I added it late, sorry, it's up now
@@thefrugalcrafter Thank you. Have a nice day :-)
This is soo cool!
Those are the jane Davenport baton blenders
Thank U!
My problem with the dust in soft pastels isn't the mess, it's the fact it triggers my asthma. I'm excited to try pan pastels.
I hope they work out for you!
This is beautiful ❤️
Araconda chickens lay pastel eggs. We had some for a while
Fun to watch!!!!!

Show the muggles! :) this is beautiful
I‘m thinking of getting a basic set of pan pastels for background work, so thank you for all your information! Have you tried the blending medium they offer?
Yes but honestly they blend so well on their own I never use it
I wonder what would happen if you applied a layer of blending medium on your surface before you start painting... Would that be like bob ross's liquid white? Idk but that medium interests me
Very nice rendition Lindsay!
PS: Could you kindly link the ref photo? I know you mentioned you would link it but I am unable to find it, unless I am not looking properly ❤️
It's up now, sorry:)
@@thefrugalcrafter Thank you Lindsay, much appreciated :)
