    The guest said he's not aware of.supplements that help PD. I encourage him to look into how people have been greatly helped with thiamine primarily the TTFD form of thiamine which crosses the blood-brain barrier. Some say benphodiamine crosses in some say it doesn't. The evidence for TTFD supplementation either with injections sublingual or ally is very strong from my research.       Yes, Benfothiamine, macuna purens, and good quality ubiquinol are great for PD symptoms.

      Thanks, I certainly do know of thiamine and its theoretical applicability in PD. I am neutral on thiamine as I am with most supplements - I'd like to see some stronger evidence for its effectiveness. I think there is much more to PD than optimizing thiamine. However, I am always open-minded so if you have some good research evidence (beyond Dr Constantini's work) then please do let me know. Matt.

    The real cause is a lack of exposure to ketones in the blood. Our big brains require ketones to help fuel it but we spend our lives blocking ketone production with a crappy diet full of sugar and junk starches.

    My husband was recently diagnosed with Parkinson’s. He is interested in starting a more carnivorous keto approach. He’s not taking medications yet.
    I wish more research would be done on this topic. I suppose if there’s no pill to prescribe, there’s little interest in trials. So sad.

      My husband and I have been eating carnivore for the past 6 months. I am now convinced that if we had known about this nutritional therapy pre-2019, my mom would not have died from complications of Parkinson's. It would have been particularly helpful if we could have started the diet therapy BEFORE getting on board the sinemet/carbidopa levodopa runaway train. She said she thought the medication was killing her when she started taking it but it quickly changes the motor symptom threshold such that once on the train you can never really get back off. I really hope your husband is doing well and you both found the support needed to pursue the metabolic therapy.

      On anything you desire to create, watch your thoughts and words. "He's not taking medications yet," is a subtle declaration that he will, even if subconscious. As Kryon says, the cells are listening.

    Extremely rewarding presentation. My husband has Parkinson since 2010. On his 75 th birthday, his photos showed a scary weight loss inspite of his good appetite. Is keto diet advisable for him?
    He loves cheese and bacon, but i dont know if he csn give up oatmeal or crossant or pasta.
    I commrnd your intense drive to promote mitochondrrial repair. Gow do you monitor brain mitochondrial integrity? Thank you

    THANK YOU 🙏!! Absolutely amazing information! I’m a functional medicine nutritionist and I have had this hypothesis for over 4 years!! Thank you for showing more proof! I reversed mild cognitive impairment via supplements and modified ketogenic diet!! Also now in the health and wellness whole health approach.
    One question…Fiber has been shown to feed the bacteria of the mitochondria. What trials/studies have shown this not to be the case? Thank you Dr.🙏

      Thanks! I am not sure I understand the fiber question. Fiber can be utilized by gut bacteria, but mitochondria metabolize have a much more versatile metabolism. Matt.

      You don’t need a study to prove it doesn’t. If your body is producing enough ketones you produce butyrate so fiber and all the problems it causes is completely unnecessary

    I was Diagnosed with PD in 2013, i dont have tremors, have recently started keto and intermittent fasting. I mostly have issues with walking/balance am on high dose of ropinerole as had reaction to leva/carbadopa….will let you know how it goes . Am also on
    B 1 higher dose. Thanks for your research. M Dougherty

    I just started the keto diet with intermittent fasting about 2 1/2 weeks ago. I am not sure if I need to add the B1 therapy or not? What about vitamin B supplements? Or other supplements in general. I had a very bad reaction to the carbidopa levodopa, so I am not on any meds.

    I would take part in a trail. I do keto diet and B1 mega dose therapy, and I also take supplements that boost mitochondria function. Supplements like tudca that neuron protective, nac, and glycine to boost glutathione, R Alpha Lipoic Acid that is neuron protective, they all help the mitochondria. Uthorlin A is another mitochondria booster, but it is expensive.

    Parkinson’s and The B1 Therapy (Thiamine HCL)- Daphne Bryan, PhD. This is a good reason for 1:10:50 supplements.

      Very good point I just made my post about this and then I saw your post. I believe the most efficacious form of thiamine is TTFD.

      Hi, thanks, I know of thiamine. I know of Dr Constantini's work, however, I think there is more to PD than optimizing thiamine. Many supplements have been touted over the decades and when put to the test, did not deliver. That said, it would be nice to see a good clinical trial of thiamine in PD - an RCT would be needed given the strong placebo effect in PD. Funding would not be difficult to obtain for such a study so they should just do it and let's see what happens. Until then, I think it will be difficult to really know the potential applicability of thiamine in PD. Best, Matt.

    Fabulous overview. I’m convinced keto and fasting work for neurodegenerative diseases.
    While you suspect the modern diet as the culprit how about the increase in technology/computer use, electromagnetic radiation from cell phone towers?

      Are you taking TTFD form of thiamine? That one crosses the blood brain barrier. There's an ongoing debate about other forms in that regard.

    These methods are for ALL neurodegenerative diseases, not just Parkinson’s.

      There is some truth to that. It is possible though. I recommend eggs. They are a workhorse. And inexpensive cuts of meat can be thrown into a crockpot, and turned into magic deliciousness. There is nothing wrong nutritionally with frozen veggies and you can even go and eat at McDonald's as long as you eat the burger and salad and not the bun and soda snd fries. There are a lot of great ideas that I found by listening to Dr. Westman. He tells a story of one of his clients who lost 100 pounds by going exclusively to McDonald's. It wasn't a gimmick. It's simply where the man got his food every day. Going for co-pays to the doctor is expensive to. I wish everyone the best of luck on this journey. I have found the keto has been optimal for my health and I couldn't recommend it highly enough. Good luck everyone.

      The most expensive items for me has been having to buy new clothes when my fat boy clothes simply got too big. And savings on beers at about $7/8 a pint (quality craft beers) covers my healthy meals since I gave up beer. Lastly consider, lots of processed foods are very expensive; potato chips, pretzels, chip and snack crackers, cookies, the list goes on. My cart of meat and frozen vegs costs about the same as one filled with garbage, and I don’t need nearly as much of it.

    What I dont quite understand about the keto diet is that if what causes mitochondria dysfunction is maybe pesticides and herbicides that are obviously in every food we eat from nature, how is it possible that we should be eating animals if it has been proven that they have been fed with food full of hormones, pesticides and herbicides? Keto diet is full of animal produce foods (cheeses, eggs, meat, poultry, fish, etc) so for me is very difficult to understand what you are suggesting. Can you explain this, please? Thank you for sharing your knowledge ❤

      Hi Bea, good question. It is likely a matter of exposure. Direct exposure to chemicals is much worse than indirect exposure through eating food during which there was exposure. In an ideal world, you would want to eat food (veg or meat) with minimal exposure to chemicals, but that is not always possible. In theory, the benefits of being in physiological ketosis would likely outweigh any minimal residual chemicals/hormones in the food. Regards, Matt.

      The pesticides are directly placed on vegetables which our bodies aren’t necessarily suited to eat plus all the pesticides from the vegetables make it that much worse. Where you are saying taking something second hand that has been broken down by other animals and have eliminated much of that is just as bad. So 100gms is the same as 1gm?
      Then consider on keto you only eat twice a day at most. You should be able to work that out.

      Mitochondria love ketones rather than glucose. That’s a reason for Keto or low carb.

      CLEAN keto is restorative. Don't eat bottom feeders, including pork, and make sure animals are grass-fed, no antibiotics, etc.

    I have parkinson,take 2 meds every 3 hours,how long can l fast for?

      Hi Leo. Levodopa in PD is best taken on an empty stomach (only with water), ideally 1 hour before or after the last meal. Protein from food interferes with levodopa absorption. So if you are fractionating your meds to 3-hourly, aim to have them only with water, then time meals to be right between the 3-hour intervals. And of course, if you do intermittent fasting, this may augment the levodopa even more as there will be less protein interference. Matt.

      ...and to answer your question more directly (sorry) - you can fast as long as you want on your regimen, but perhaps I would start with just going to 2 meals a day timed appropriately, no snacks, and ensure plenty of water and sufficient salt. If you are unclear on how to do this I suggest a guide who is experienced in fasting. Matt.

      I am a Parkinson's specialist, practicing functional nutrition. I do not recommend carnivore diet for PD but ABSOLUTELY recommend clean fat keto. Clean fat and clean animal protein is very important for healing. Stay away from bottom-feeders such as pork, shell fish, tilapia/cat fish, etc. They eat environmental waste and toxins.

    My husband was recently diagnosed with PD. He is 63 and has never been a snacker or hi carb, but always a heavy beer drinker. Do you think that is a contributing factor? We have suggested many times that now he should stop drinking but that won't happen until he is unable to drive to the store and buy it himself.

      Hi! Good question. I was really worried about constipation in PD when we ran the trial, but interestingly it almost a non-issue on the ketogenic diet. I cannot fully explain it though I have some ideas. Hope that helps! Matt.

      Confirming that constipation is a non-issue on a Keto diet. I find my gut loves fat. After years of fighting constipation, bloating gas etc, I am now free of all those uncomfortable and embarrassing symptoms. I dropped 8KG of fat unexpectedly and overall I am in the best shape of my life.       Hi Thomas. The diet space can be confusing I totally agree. The difference is this - MIND is a diet, keto is a method (like fasting). In my opinion, there are major advantages to physiological ketosis for neurons. I think much of the confusion arises as many people in nutrition do not understand the ketogenic diet in this way, so it continues to be misunderstood as a diet not a method. If you are unsure, go with either option and incorporate intermittent fasting...fasting is the most important method. It is your choice in the end. Matt.

    Are there any negative aspects to a carnivore diet? You mentioned it can be done vegetarian or omnivore but overall which diet/method do you recommend most?

      Hi Chris, I am happy as long as people get into the ketogenic state, so either can work. If you had to press me though, I would say carnivore is the easiest to do and will guarantee carbs near or at zero. Omnivore is good for balance and some variety. Vegetarian is doable just have to watch the vitamin levels (particularly B1) on that. Hope that helps, Matt.
