    This tour was the best tour I've watched for this reason: Jason actually knows what all of these stations are and what they do. He said that he worked all of the stations while working his way up and it shows. He knows what they are doing and it looked like he could get in there and help out if they needed it. Bravo! Nice work.

    Back in the 70's I visited the original Gibson plant in Kalamazoo 3 times when i played gigs in that city. One of the luthiers told me that the arched top and back on a 330 series is more for looks and style as there is not much sonic resonance in the body with that center block. The hollow bodied jazz boxes are another story. Gibson made a jazz hollow body guitar called the Super 400 CES. The arched tops and backs were not pressed into shape like a 335 etc., but were hand carved from a single block of wood. I had the pleasure of meeting the artisan who did the carving. The top of the guitar was tuned so the bass and treble side were an octave apart in tone when tapped.

    • @stephensmith799
      @stephensmith799 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow! Skill. A luthier once said that a Strat neck and body should be an octave apart when tapped... Interesting...

    • @giulioluzzardi7632
      @giulioluzzardi7632 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe he meant 335 when talking about the centre block? In any case I agree but I have a 335 from 2012 that sounds and plays exceptionally. The 335 is probably the most versatile Electric guitar made...just look at all the players that use and have used them. They do need to be looked after and well maintained but they should last a life-time.

    Just got my first 2016 LP ES model I had custom ordered. Went with the Goldtop,P90s with slim taper neck. I have 8 Les Pauls,all fairly heavy including a 78 pro that weights 12.5 pounds! This ES weights just over 6. Its time to get rid of my boat anchors and get the ones 8 pounds and less.

    the only thing about this video I did not like was the part where the Gentleman said,referring to a part of the fingerboard process: "We have a compnay that does that for us...". I'd like to know who and where that company is, as if it is not in the USA, well, then that opens a large can of worms....Overall, after watching this...I want an ES-335, a new one, to beat up and abuse and call my very own....

    • @julosx
      @julosx 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's not actually a company, it's mainly individuals like the former Kalamazoo factory workers who cut up and glue the inlays on the fretboard. And yes, these people live in the U.S. and do it at home. Then they send back the finished fretboards to Memphis, Nashville and Bozeman.

    • @hadley101

      Interesting, thought it might be Indians that do the rough work as the US Government suggested to Gibson as a way to get them off their back.
      Maybe the Indian workers rough and slot the rosewood and Americans do the inlay work?

    What is that P-90 guitar with a Bigsby he's playing at the beginning? Is that color burgundy metallic? It's gorgeous. That lemon burst with the double creams was also sick.
    RIP Gibson Memphis. With a few exceptions, this tour makes it look more like the Kalamazoo factory footage from the '60s. The main Nashville factory by comparison looks slip-shod and this Memphis factory does as much detail as the Custom Shop. I understand they split the Memphis employees between both when it closed.

Pickup holder cracked within a year. My Gibson Memphis ES-335 was made better (once I set it up how I want it) and was cheaper. And I can't put it down (never felt like that with the former). • @thomasraven
      @thomasraven 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They did change it from 17 degrees to 14 degrees once and people fell apart. I don't get it. I understand if folks want to buy historic replicas but it's also important to move forward. My understanding is that Epiphones currently use 14 degree headstock angles because Epi buyers are less worried about historic accuracy.

    • @MICKEYISLOWD
      @MICKEYISLOWD 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      They should offer both especially the ones with the contoured heel.

    • @Schlumbucketreturns
      @Schlumbucketreturns 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's nothing wrong with the headstock angle as long as the nut is properly slotted for the strings you're using. If you're still having problems there are string lubricants you can apply that will eliminate any string binding at the nut. Tuning issues are more of a setup problem than a manufacturing design problem.

    • @deaddoll1361
      @deaddoll1361 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@captainamerica9353 There wasn't much automation at all, which is why early guitars varied more than their modern equivalents. The programming of the CNC machines were done by taking averages of old guitars and paterns to establish exact sizings, which weren't achievable using the old manual methods.

    Great video. Gibson gets a lot of hate... usually from people who can't afford Gibsons. The ES series is expensive because it's very labor intensive, as this video shows. Binding and complicated fancy finishes do not make a guitar sound better - they make it look better and they make it more expensive. Whether that's worth the money is up to the person buying the guitar.

    Why the hell you have to play background music, when one has to strain to listen to what the tour guide is saying. It’s bad enough when you have to try and make out what he’s saying over the ambient sound of the factory.

    great video, but very noisy (of course it is a factory) and it is not easy to hear the explanations, so why did you add this crappy music on top of it????

    Great video, Jason. Love all the details that you intensely explained. I do have a concern for the workers who do the same thing over and over and over...The day after Thanksgiving, I purchased the Gibson Custom Alex Lifeson Signature ES Les Paul and couldn't wait for FedEx to deliver. After inspection, I found smudges of dirt or something in the black/white striped trim around the body and the headstock. Luckily, with a little effort, they wiped off. Also, just below his signature, above the neck, there are streaks in the lacquer that are permanent. I discovered this flaw by letting the light reflect off the lacquer. The black paint that the worker applied in the F holes was sloppy so a black Sharpee did the trick and hid the few exposed white dots of bare wood. Some players have $4,000 sitting in their pocket, some players take over a year to save up $4,000 or they go into debt to make this kind of purchase like I did. So, finding flaws like this is painfully disappointing. I try to keep in mind that nobody's perfect but considering Gibson's reputation, either the skilled worker or the QC team need not let this become so mundane that these flaws slip through. I've seen so many TH-cam videos of excited Gibson lovers unboxing their long-awaited dream guitar only to be crushed by flaws and errors. To add more heartache, my ES Les Paul was supposed to include a user's manual and truss rod tool...Now, the good news...In spite of these issues, I wouldn't trade this axe for anything else (other than Jimmy Page's '59 LP). The quality of sound that's produced by the woods, MHS pups and CTS 550K pots make up for it, by far. It's comfortable, plays so dayam good and I'm proud of the antique white color, in which this is Gibson's 1st guitar to apply this color. By the way, the F holes do not take away the Les Paul sound...The best of luck to future buyers and the workers who do this every day...

    I would say the Memphis plant produced some of the best Guitars Gibson ever made. My 2018 Les Paul made in Is a good guitar but feels and sounds Off compared to a 2012 ES-335 I recently purchased. It really has a vintage tone to it. I feel the Memphis guitars could really hold their value as time goes on because those craftsman made such amazing guitars there.

    I wish to thank all those involved in the process of the making of this very informative video...truly amazing and informative.
    I have learned a lot and have come to realize just how many "hands" are involved in the manufacturing process. Mistakenly, I
    was under the impression that the manufacturing of the guitars was now done mostly by machines. To see that the precision
    work is done by hand gives me a greater appreciation for the Gibson product. Thank you very much.

    I think they’re worth every penny, the ES 335 is my dream guitar that I plan to own one day. The closest thing I have to one is an Epiphone Lucille, which I’ve gone thru with new electrics and pickups. I thoroughly enjoyed the video which shows all the work that goes into building these great guitars.

    Seeing that natural ES-175 almost brought tears to my eyes-beautiful. The crew there look like they are dedicated to their work. I wish the upper management was able to capitalize on that history and dedication. Last time I was in Memphis, it made me sad to see that they were attempting to lease out part of the factory.

    Why doesn't GIBSON make a CHUCK BERRY signature model? Every time I see a vidio of him he is playing a GIBSON. IT WOULD BE A great tribute to a great pioneer of R&R.
